Summary
“Celine gave me that recipe,” Rumi mutters quietly, looking down into her mug and cradling it close. “When I was a lot younger.”
Mira and Zoey both turn around.
“It’s my favorite.” Rumi smiles wryly. “Or was. I haven’t had it in a while.”
“I bet it’s going to taste so good,” Zoey giggles, disentangling herself from Mira to step closer towards Rumi. Zoey takes her mug and sets it on the countertop, Rumi’s arms inevitably find their way around Zoey’s waist. She leans up to kiss Rumi—soft, firm. Grounding.
Just what she needed, because Mira presses ever onwards. “Have you two spoken lately?”
“Not at all,” Rumi admits. “We haven’t—I haven’t—”
She hasn’t figured it out yet. It’s all so nebulous and confusing, the gargantuan complexity of how Celine makes her feel. Or, how Celine feels about her. The bridge between them feels frail and tenuous—if it’s even still there at all—and crossing it feels scary. Terrifying.
And yet,
“I missed her today.”
[OR: Rumi cooks an old recipe for Zoey & Mira, and realizes something very important along the way.]

Summary
After a rabies exposure, the virus must travel to the brain before it can cause symptoms. Therefore, the incubation period may last for weeks to months depending on several factors such as location of the exposure site (in relation to the brain) and age; in extremely rare cases it could be dormant for years.
Rumi thinks about this one frequently, lying in bed at night; the idea that you could be wasting away at any moment in your life. A poison in your veins with you none the wiser– like a ticking bomb just waiting to go off.
You would need to get bit or scratched first, of course, and if you took the right precautions you would likely never know. And Rumi has never been bitten anyway. She’s fine.
Absently, she scratches at her shoulder– skin tight.also known affectionately as the “rabies rumi” fic. i promise she doesn’t actually get rabies.

Summary
All demons came from human souls in one way or another, because the very creation of them required it. Something couldn't be created from nothing. An exchange had to take place, so if there wasn't a human to begin with? Something of equal value had to be destroyed instead.
Humans weren't made to give birth to demons.
Not like this.
Mi-yeong died when she was 24.
An exchange. A life for a life. A human for a demon. Mi-yeong for Rumi.
Celine does love Rumi, she does, but there's not much room for love when she's filled with so much grief.

Summary
Nothing in Mira's life had ever been blameless. It was always someone’s fault. Her brother’s, for being a coward, for putting Mira in the firing line to save his own skin. Her father’s, for thinking violence would make her the person he wanted her to be. Her mother’s, for telling her she wasn’t good enough, that she deserved it, for not protecting her.
Hers, for being too aggressive, too feckless, too difficult to love.
Celine’s, for every lie she’d told Rumi.
Being angry and protective is all well and good, but it's not always what people need.

Summary
“I’m sorry,” Zoey cut in meekly. “I’m just trying to understand—”
Rumi whirled to face her, and she flinched back. “I’ve explained this to you before. We have insects that are pests and we have insects that are beneficial. If we let the pests live, they do damage, so we kill them. It doesn’t matter if it’s alive—all of them are alive, but some of them need to die.”
A study of Rumi and bugs.
