One year later…
Rusty walked across the University of Vermont campus toward the visitor’s lot where Sharon and Brenda were waiting for him. Sharon had texted when they landed and Rusty arranged to meet them at the edge of campus.
Sharon and Brenda waved to him as soon as he crested the hill. He grinned and jogged up to them, Sharon pulling him into a big hug and Brenda wrapping her arms around them both. He hadn’t seen them since Christmas and had missed them a lot more than he thought he would.
“Are Zach and Erica going to join us?” Sharon asked as they got into the car.
“They can do dinner but they both have finals today.”
“Don’t you have finals?” Brenda asked, turning around in her seat.
“Nope.” He chuckled, “I’m an art student. My finals are projects and I had one class whose final was an essay.”
“So, what do you want to do for lunch?” Brenda looked at Rusty through the rearview mirror.
“How about we get some takeout and do a picnic at the park like we did when we first got here?” He suggested.
“I don’t think we have a blanket, kid.”
“I have one in my backpack.”
“Okay, then.” Brenda chuckled. “Where do you want to get food from then?”
Brenda ate the last of her salad and leaned put the container in the takeout bag. “I’m having déjà vu.”
Sharon chuckled, dropping her empty container back into the takeout bag too. “Why don’t we complete the déjà vu and take a picture?” She stood up and held out a hand to Brenda. “If Rusty would indulge us.”
“Of course.” Rusty grinned, standing up.
Sharon wrapped her arms around Brenda and Brenda smiled, folding into her arms. Rusty started taking pictures.
“I love you.” Sharon whispered.
“I love you too.” Brenda smiled sweetly.
Sharon gave her a kiss before releasing her and taking a tiny step back. “Brenda…” Sharon began, as she sank down onto one knee. Brenda’s hands came up to her mouth. “Would you make me the happiest woman on earth… and be my wife? Will you marry me, Georgie Girl?”
Brenda bit back a sob, grinning. “Yes!” She took Sharon by the hands and pulled her back up to pull her into a deep kiss. “Yes, yes, yes!”
Sharon leaned her forehead against Brenda’s. “You’re the love of my life.”
“I’m so happy to have been part of a family with you and with Rusty for these past two years. And now I’m excited to make it official.” Brenda cupped Sharon’s cheek and kissed her again.
Brenda looked over to Rusty who was still taking pictures. She quirked an eyebrow at him. “Were you in on this?”
Rusty laughed, “well, she needed a photographer.”
Brenda held out an arm. “Get over here.”
He leaned back against Brenda and she wrapped an arm around him, giving him a squeeze as Rusty took a picture of the three of them.
