“Look after Andrea, she’s the future.” Lex said. Sure Kara could do that, no problem right? Oh if only things were that simple. What Lex failed to mansion was his secret plan to swap their minds!
“We need to test out the Lenses, for safety.” Lex said. Yeah well now Kara was stuck in Andrea’s body and vise versa.
She didn’t really remember much. One moment she put the Lenses on, and the next she’s in Andrea’s body. And Lex just shrugged!
“We’ll find a way to swap you back, its fine.” It was most certainly not fine in the slightest.
After Lex had left Kara was alone in the room with Andrea, she stared at her, at herself, with wide eyes while Andrea just smiled at her.
“Well this is interesting. I must admit I didn’t realize that the Lenses could do this.”
“I don’t think they can. Lex clearly messed things up.” Kara narrowed her eyes at Andrea who seemed to be taking this whole thing pretty well.
“It kind of works out don’t you think?”
“Well...” Andrea crossed her hands, “You were told to protect me, but now I’m you. So I’m safe in your body and you can make sure my body is safe, call your DEO friends.”
Kara sighed. This was gonna end really badly she knew it. First things first she needs to call Alex.
The phone only ringed a few times before Alex picked up.
“Andrea Rojas? Why are you calling me?” Alex’s voice sounded confused.
“Alex, Lex switched Andrea and me, please we need help. This is Kara by the way. And I know that this sounds crazy and I don’t know how Lex did it but we need to find a way to reverse it. I’m rambling, I know, but please get to CatCo as soon as you can.” Kara took a deep breath after all that.
Alex was silent for a few moments.
“Normally I wouldn’t believe you but I know how my sister rambles when she’s nervous and under pressure, its you alright.” A chuckle, “Just wait there for a bit.”
“Ok. Love you.”
“Don’t... don’t say that. It sounds weird in Andrea’s voice.”
Kara laughed and hung up. She looked up to see Andrea looking at her like she was trying to figure something out.
“What?” Kara raised a brow.
“Do you always hear so well?”
“Uh, yeah. I learned to control it but yeah.”
Andrea smirked, “So your real name is Kara huh?”
Kara’s eyes widened. She was so panicked that she didn’t even think about what she was saying.
“I...” Kara was at a loss for words, “You can’t tell anyone. Its a secret.”
“Does Lena know?”
Kara gulped, “Yes.”
Andrea hummed. She flexed her biceps and whistled, “Nice.”
Kara blushed, this was so embarrassing. She sat down in a chair and waited for Alex. Luckily she didn’t have to wait for long.
“Kara!” Alex stormed into the office, “What happened here.”
“Lex happened. Obsidian VR happened.” Kara said and crossed her arms over her chest.
Kara and Andrea explained what they knew about Lex’s plan. By the end of it Alex wanted to punch him.
“Ok look, we don’t know how to reverse this but I think we can all agree that we need to make this work. The press conferences can’t just stop.” Andrea didn’t want them to stop.
“Neither can Supergirl being a hero.” Kara argued back.
“Fine. I’ll be the hero you go talk to the press and promote Obsidian Lenses.”
“Promote them?! They’re the whole reason we’re in this mess!”
“Yes, but we don’t know what Lex is planing yet. We need to play along for now. Or do you think we should put everything on hold until we sort this out.”
Kara huffed. She hated to admit it but Andrea had a point. She was just gonna have to suck it up for a few days and hope that they would find a way to get things back to normal soon. And that Andrea could handle being Supergirl without getting killed.
Andrea left with Alex, while Kara tried to figure out what to say at tomorrows conference. She was already skeptical about Obsidian, but now she was more than sure she hated everything about it. No matter how much Andrea kept saying that they would make people happy, they were clearly dangerous if Lex could tamper with them like he did.
Now to Kara’s credit she was able to avoid being a complete mess when it came to presenting Obsidian Lenses. But now she understood why Lena liked drinking on occasion. It might not have been the same type of work but a little sip of whiskey afterwards did help to calm her nerves.
She also had to have a serious talk with Andrea. She’s been Supergirl for about a week and to her credit she wasn’t terrible at it. But for some reason Andrea thought it would be a great idea to take selfies and more or less turn Supergirl into an internet celebrity. She was already famous but never anything like this.
Currently Kara was watching Andrea put out a fire, she seemed to have the situation under control and got the fire put out pretty quickly. She landed and as always reporters swarmed towards her.
Andrea put her hand up just as they started asking questions, “I’m sorry but from now on I’ll only be taking questions and interviews from CatCo as I’m working closely with Andrea Rojas.” With that she took off into the sky.
Kara could only watch the scene unfold with wide eyes. She was flabbergasted. Now everyone’s gonna think she’s a sellout. She immediately picked up the phone to call Andrea. She got no response. She was going to kill her.
Hours later her phone ringed, it was Andrea.
“What’s up?” her voice was upbeat and cheerful.
“What’s up?! What was that statement?! Why would Supergirl give exclusive interviews to CatCo only?” Kara was angry, no she was pissed off.
“Its for public image. Oh wait until you see this, you’re gonna love it!”
Kara blinked a few times, confused but before she could answer the phone call ended. Moments later Andrea appeared in her apartment
Andrea looked different than she did when she saw her on earlier. For starters she had a haircut. Or rather Supergirl did. Her hair was short, a bit shaved on the sides and messily tussled back. Her cape was also different, it went slightly over one shoulder while the other was bare, it looked like it wrapped around her rather than simple hanging from her shoulders. She still had her pants but now she also had a long, blue skirt that parted on the side.
“What the actual fuck?!” Kara didn’t curse a lot but when she did you knew she was pissed, very pissed.
“A little makeover. Nice isn’t it?” Andrea twirled around as to show off her new look.
Kara blinked. Then blinked again. This had to be a joke. Or maybe she was still in the VR world.
“That’s not a little makeover. What were you thinking?!”
“Its to boost your public image of course.” Andrea shrugged like it was the most obvious answer.
“I like my public image just the way it was.” Kara crossed her arms and pouted.
Andrea shook her head, “Its ok, I don’t expect you to get the social media business. Speaking of business, good job on the promotion tour.”
“I mostly just repeat the things I’ve heard you say. Or the things I’ve read about Obsidian VR. I still think the product is a bad idea. There aren’t enough fail safes on it.”
“It’ll be fine, I’m sure. We already tested it plenty of times.”
Kara raised and brow and gestured between the two of them.
“Ah yes well... Lex had his reasons for this one. Look just make sure the launch goes smoothly and I’ll take care of all the Supergirl stuff. I think I’m a natural at it don’t you.” Andrea smiled and Kara felt a shiver run down her spine. There was something almost sinister behind the smile but before she could say anything more Andrea took off.
The day of the product launch came and went seemingly without a hitch. Kara was quite surprised actually. She still didn’t like Obsidian Platinum VR but she can’t just pull them off the market without an expatiation or reason. Lucky for her a reason soon presented itself. The people who used the lenses were defenseless and there was no kill switch fail safe. Which turned out was all part of Gamma’s plan. To take over the world by killing 1/4 of humanity while they’re in the VR.
Andrea was forced to confront the harsh reality. Her dream had failed. Her dream was stolen from her and turned into something horrible. She had to fix this, to make thing right. She had to help those people, save them.
And there was only one way to do that, enter the VR herself and convince the people to turn off the Lenses. It was painful, but it had to be done. It was done.
The aftermath wasn’t pretty.
For starters there was Kara to deal with.
“I told you they were dangerous. Why didn’t you listen?” Kara was staring her down, angry but also relived that the people were safe.
“It was my dream. And I messed it up.” Andrea whispered to herself more than anyone else.
Kara’s eyes softened she was still a hero no matter what body she was in and she couldn’t help but want to comfort Andrea, despite her mistake, “Look, its not the end of the world. You wan still make things right. We can switch back and you can fix things.”
“There’s no fixing it. At least... not as Andrea Rojas.”
Kara’s eyes widened, “What do you mean.”
“As Supergirl I can help people. Make amends. Why don’t we stay like this for a while longer.” Andrea started levitating, getting ready to leave.
“What? So you’re just running away?! Leaving me to deal with your mess just because you’re scared?!”
“I’m not running. Just finding a different way to help. And you play your part as me pretty well, I’m sure you’ll figure things out.”
“Andrea!” Kara didn’t have time to say anything to her because Andrea was gone in a blink of an eye.
Kara sighed and slumped down in the chair. Great. Another mess to deal with.
It was pretty obvious that Obsidian North was heading to bankruptcy quickly. Kara couldn’t really save it now, but she can save one part of it at least. CatCo.
It took a while and some strings had to be pulled but Kara wanted to get CatCo back to being a journalist company it was before Andrea bought it. Also it became more than obvious that Obsidian Lenses had to go. As expected Andrea didn’t take it well.
“You shut down my project?!” Andrea was so angry her eyes flashed red.
“Your project almost killed two billion people! And you’re the one who left me to deal with the fallout. Well this is my solution. Oh and CatCo’s going back to the way it was, I’m sure you saw that.”
Andrea scoffed, “Yes, I expected you to do that sooner to be honest.”
“This can’t go on. You need to switch back with me if you don’t like the way I’m running things. Things that are supposed to be your respectability.” Kara almost pleaded with Andrea but she didn’t want to hear it.
“Fine. I really didn’t want to do this. It was my last resort and it makes me sick to have to do it.” Kara pushed a button on her desk and in an instant the room was covered in a green glow.
Andrea gasped and fell to her knees, “Kryptonite, are you crazy. This is your body you know.” Andrea clenched her teeth.
“I know, and I want it back. Its the only way we can fix this.”
“No! I can do good like this! I know I can.” Now it was Andrea’s turn to plead with Kara.
“You can do good as Andrea Rojas. Its your dream after all. Just because the VR didn’t work doesn’t mean your next project is doomed to fail. Andrea, you can make this right, I know you can. You don’t need superpowers for that. And I think you know that too.” Kara’s voice was soft, not angry as Andrea expected it to be.
Kara walked towards her, offering her a pair of Obsidian Lenses.
“Its time to fix this.”
Andrea was hesitant. Could she really fix it. Face the wrongs, being blind to the dangers? She didn’t believe it. But Supergirl... no Kara did believe. And two billion people put their faith in Supergirl, in Andrea. Sure she looked like Supergirl at the time but it was her in the end. She could take the heat.
“Ok, ok. I get it.” Andrea took the Lenses. Kara smiled at her and nodded. It was scary to go back to the VR. Would they wake up? Would the switch work? So many doubts and questions. But they had to take the risk.
And it payed off. After they returned to their own bodies Andrea decided to shut down Obsidian North for good, she made a public statement and as expected faced a lot of backlash for Obsidian Platinum VR. Lucky for her she had Kara, both as Kara Danvers and as Supergirl, to back her up. Kara did an interview with Andrea in which Andrea explained what happened, apologized and stated that she would keep the changes that “she” made in regards to CatCo going back to journalism. Kara was pleased.
As for Kara, she retracted the statement about CatCo only interviews saying that she thought it would be a good idea at the time to work closely with the company that Andrea ran since worked as her protector but it turned out not to be as good as it hoped as she alienated a lot of her supporters and she was sorry for that. She went back to her old costume but decided to keep the haircut.
Kara and Andrea had a better relationship after everything was said and done. Andrea still asked to take pictures with Kara on occasion and this time Kara was more than happy to do so.
