It is a hectic day. But they are very excited for Kim Dokja's first birthday party.
Han Sooyoung has booked a hall in a restaurant, and although the foods are included, Yoo Joonghyuk remains stubborn to cook at least a few kinds of Kim Dokja's favourite foods.
That's the reason why he's buckling down in the kitchen, stuck with SP who prepares the cupcakes as requested by the children.
Fortunately, the party is held at night, so they still have some times.
"Yoo Joonghyuk, why do you even bother to cook? I've ordered plenty!"
Han Sooyoung comes to the kitchen while carrying Kim Dokja. He is holding a whole flower plant from the flower to its root.
'Wait, is that a flower from the neighbour's garden?' Yoo Joonghyuk starts to feel the cold sweats in his back. Quietly praying that they won't get any problem because of that.
"I have to make sure that Dokja will eat. We don't know if he will like the foods that you've ordered or not."
All of Kim Dokja's picky-eating behaviour and his body weight things really drive him crazy.
Han Sooyoung hums. "Oh, you're right."
She continues, "Is there anything I can eat right now? I'm sooo tired of carying Dokja everywhere."
"Just put him down, he can walk on his own."
"He doesn't want to."
Han Sooyoung crouches down and releases her arms, but Kim Dokja is hugging her neck, glued firmly and refuses to let go. Han Sooyoung sighs, "See?"
"Hm, be strong then."
"Damn. I'll have you know that he's your son."
"As if I could forget. Oh, and you can ask SP for cupcakes."
SP clicks his tongue at his words. "You're only allowed to have one in maximum."
Han Sooyoung stares at him incredulously. "What the hell. So stingy! Are you saying that I must divides a cupcake for me and Dokja?"
SP thinks for a moment. "Then Dokja gets two. You will get his leftover."
Han Sooyoung gapes, he doesn't even try to hide that he's playing favorites. "Your assholery never ceases to amaze me."
"I'll take that as a compliment."
She receives the cupcakes while grumbling, and Kim Dokja streches his hand to grab it. Successfully grasps a cupcake, he immediately brings it to his mouth.
Yoo Joonghyuk shouts in a nearly hysterical voice. "Wait! Wash your hand--"
Of course, it's too late.
Deep breath, Yoo Joonghyuk says, "Never mind."
"Ah, don't worry too much. It will help him to build his immunity."
"...Immunity, my ass."
Han Sooyoung grins. "Come on Dokja, don't give your father a heart attack and wash your hands." She washes his hands thoroughly, but not before take back the cupcake in his hand and put away the flower in the table. This time, it's SP's turn to scream.
"Hey! You put soils everywhere! Throw it away!"
"No, don't throw it! Dokja picks it up for himself, you know? You will break his heart."
"...Fine. But put it on the floor."
At first, Yoo Joonghyuk planned a small party for family only. But then Han Sooyoung, as a party person, decides to strongly oppose his plan and creates a big party where she invites all of her friends.
("What? Why would you want a small party for Kim Dokja? This is his first birthday!"
"There's no need to create a big party for a birthday. It happens every year, anyway."
"But it happens only once a year!"
"And there's always the next year, Han Sooyoung."
"Bold of you to say that, Yoo Joonghyuk. Can you see the future? There's a possibility that Kim Dokja decides to run away from you next year because of your stinginess!"
"He'll be only two next year, so he won't."
"Okay, make sense. Then, who knows that someday you'll be locked in jail for your criminality!"
"Fat chance. The person who's most likely will go to jail is SP--" "Hey!" "--or you, not me."
"How dare you! Come on, Yoo Joonghyuk! This is his very first birthday! It can't be just an ordinary party, right?!"
"...Fine. Do whatever you like.")
Luckily for him, she doesn't have a lot of friends. Well, of course, it's because not much people can tolerate Han Sooyoung's absurdity.
Unluckily for him, a few of them are the person whom he is reluctant to meet.
Such as, his ex. Not that he still loves her though.
They broke up a long time ago and the first time they meet after that is when his son's birthday. It's awkward. Probably.
"Yoo Joonghyuk-ssi." Lee Seolhwa smiles. Pretty as always. "It's been a while since we met. How have you been?"
"Great." He forms a smile. "How about you?"
"I've been busy lately. Children usually are very happy during winter so they're playing outside a lot and often get some injuries." Ah, a doctor is always busy.
Then she crouches down until she is on the eye level with Kim Dokja who is standing beside Yoo Joonghyuk.
"Happy birthday, Kim Dokja." She smiles brightly. "Here is your present."
Kim Dokja smiles shyly and accepts the present happily.
"Thank you, Seolhwa-ssi. I hope you enjoy the party."
"Yes, Joonghyuk-ssi, thank you as well for inviting me."
Yoo Joonghyuk looks around. There aren't so many people as he thinks it will be.
Yoo Joonghyuk scowls. "You don't need to scream. I'm not deaf."
Bihyung, his manager, grins widely, then shifts his gaze to Kim Dokja.
"Happy birthday, kid. I hope you grow up fast so you can help me to overcome your father."
"And what does that even mean."
"It means that I hope you to become more cooperative."
Yoo Joonghyuk sighs. "What now?"
Bihyung's face is brighten up.
"You see, I got this offer to arrange an interview with you for a magazine, it's about the nomination of 'Hot Daddy of the Year--"
"--it really--wait! I haven't finished!"
"My answer remains no."
Fortunately, before Bihyung coaxes him even further, he feels a slight tug from his pants.
Looks down, he sees Dokja is raising his arms towards him, a gesture of asking to be carried. And of course, Yoo Joonghyuk grants his wish.
"Are you hungry?"
"Hmmhmmhmm.." Dokja nods.
"Let's eat something, then." He doesn't even care that the party haven't started yet.
He carries Dokja to the tables where all of the foods are served.
"What do you want to eat? I have made some dumplings if you want."
"Mmmhmm!" Dokja is nodding furiously.
Yoo Joonghyuk smiles. "Alright." Actually, he's kind of worry if Dokja will continue to talk like that, but he'll let it slides this time.
He walks to where the dumplings are served, and stands in front of the table.
Standing in the other side of the table and a little bit to the left are SP who arranges the birthday cupcakes with an irritated expression, and Sun Wukong
who is crazy in love with him.
Yoo Joonghyuk quietly picks some dumplings while trying to ignore Sun Wukong's attempt to flirt with his brother--
"Hey, did it hurt?"
"When you fell from heaven."
"Did you just call me satan?"
Damn it, who knows that holding back a laughter can be this painful.
Then he sits in a chair with Dokja in his lap, eating dumplings happily.
Yoo Joonghyuk's startled and glares at Han Sooyoung fiercely.
"Come on, everybody is here. You'll blow the candles on Dokja's behalf."
Yoo Joonghyuk frowns. "Why do I know nothing about this?"
"Hm? Didn't I already say it? No? Hmmm... Well, I don't see any problem though? I've prepared the candles, you see. Don't let my effort goes in vain and get your ass over there."
He swallows back the curses he wants to spit out (because, of course, his dearest child is here), and helplessly he walks to the front where a table with a cake on it and a chair are arranged, while carrying Dokja.
"Say something." Han Sooyoung whispers and hands him a microphone.
'Damn, at least give me some briefing, will you.'
He takes the mic anyway, and after thinks for a moment, he clears his throat and starts talking.
"I want to say thank you to everyone who took their time out of their busy lives to come to my son's first birthday. And also thank you for all of the presents and wishes, it means more than you'd ever know, although your presences mean more than your presents. I really hope you enjoy the party, thank you once again."
Applause fills the room. Then, Han Sooyoung steps to the front to take over the mic.
"Well then, shall we start the tradition?" She's MCing the party.
After she lights up the candles, she leads the audiences to sing 'Happy Birthday'.
"Come on, Yoo Joonghyuk! Make a wish for Dokja!"
Although he doesn't believe something like this, he closes his eyes, and makes a wish.
A wish that Dokja will be happy to have him as a father. A selfish wish that Yoo Joonghyuk will be the person he loves the most, just like how Yoo Joonghyuk feels for him.
He opens his eyes and sees a pair of clear black eyes is staring back at him.
He holds him closely, foreheads touching, and he whispers, "Kim Dokja."
Kim Dokja stares at him, with a pure smile in the lips and his little palms touch Yoo Joonghyuk's cheeks.
Warm fills his chest, Yoo Joonghyuk smiles, eyes tender and loving when he says,
"I love you."
Then he blows out the candles in one breath.
