Yoo Joonghyuk sighs heavily. This is going to be a very long day.
Started from the morning, when he's in his way home after groceries shopping, he meets her.
Oh no, not again. "Scram, Han Sooyoung."
"How rude to say that to your best friend!"
"You're not my friend, you're a parasite."
Han Sooyoung puts her hand in her chest and makes a look of hurt on her face. Yoo Joonghyuk sometimes wonders why she doesn't become an actress instead of a writer.
"I'm here to help you, you know? Isn't it Saturday? It will be tiring for you to do this alone!"
That's right. The reason why Yoo Joonghyuk brings two big bags of groceries in his hands now is because it's Saturday. It means that Mia will bring her friends home and play with them until night.
And it also means that he must provide enough food for the three growing children.
Yoo Joonghyuk doesn't mind with it, since he's happy if his sister's happy. He stops questioning 'where the hell the other children's parents go every weekend' since a long time ago.
What the real problem is, there is a certain witch who always joins them under the excuse of 'helping Yoo Joonghyuk cook' but the real reason is because she wants to get Yoo Joonghyuk's legendary-grade meals.
At first, she only came on Saturday, then increasing into three times a week, five times a week, and now she breaks into his house everyday. She doesn't stay all day though, she only comes when it's lunch time. The only time when she stays all day in Yoo Joonghyuk's house is Saturday.
But well, to be honest, Yoo Joonghyuk doesn't really mind with it either. Although Han Sooyoung is such a parasite, but she is a good assistant. She doesn't help much while he's cooking (she is a local disaster in the kitchen), but she brings a lot of snacks for the children, she's mostly quiet while watching the children play, sometimes even she accompanies them to the park, and occasionally, she helps him with the groceries. Like this time.
Without replying, Yoo Joonghyuk shoves a bag of groceries into Han Sooyoung's hand. Ignoring her grumble 'why is it so fucking heavy', Yoo Joonghyuk continues his walk home.
"Oppa, I'm hungry!" Mia immediately yells at him.
"Welcome back, Joonghyuk-oppa." Oh, her friends are here, already?
"Yoosung-ah, Gilyoung-ah." Yoo Joonghyuk nods at them.
"Hey, kids! Miss me?" Han Sooyoung grins cheekily.
"Get lost, Sooyoung-unnie."
Han Sooyoung gasp in surprise. "Where did you learn that? You spend too much time with this bastard, don't you?"
Yoo Joonghyuk ignores their bickering and heads towards the kitchen.
"Mia, just wait a little longer, I'll prepare breakfast."
Fortunately, the day is started peacefully. At least, as peacefully it can be with Han Sooyoung in it.
Unfortunately, it doesn't last long.
It's three in the afternoon when the heavy rain is falling.
The children are watching a movie in the living room, Han Sooyoung is working in her laptop in the same room, and Yoo Joonghyuk is in the middle of his gaming live stream in his bedroom.
Han Sooyoung yawns into her hand, and then lies in the couch as her eyes are losing their strength.
"Kids, turn the volume down. I'm trying to sleep."
"No." Lee Gilyoung and Yoo Mia give an absolute answer.
"Brats." She mutters under her breath. Choosing to give in as the only adult here, she closes her eyes and sleeps. Or she tries to sleep.
Because not even a minute has passed, the doorbell rings loudly. It rings relentlessly for almost thirty seconds as if it knows that no one in the house has the motivation to open the door.
Han Sooyoung growls. "Kids! Open the door!"
Yoo Mia retorts back. "Why don't you? You're the only adult here! What would happen if turns out it's a robber? Or a murderer? Or a kidnapp--"
"Urgh, you talk too much." Han Sooyoung sits up lazily, and at the same time, Yoo Joonghyuk appears from his bedroom. "Did the doorbell just ring?"
"Great! Perfect timing. Yoo Joonghyuk will open the door."
Yoo Joonghyuk scowls but doesn't protest. He is the host anyway.
But when he opened the door, he sees nothing. Instead, he hears a low whine from his feet. He looks down and sees a baby, wrapped with a blue blanket and lying in a basket. Awww, how cute!
Yoo Joonghyuk stares blankly. Oh look, there's a note!
He picks it up.
'His name is Kim Dokja. He was born on February 15. Please take care of him.' Is what it said.
Shocked, Yoo Joonghyuk collapses on the spot.
"HEH?! YOO JOONGHYUK!"
"There there, Yoo Joonghyuk. Take a deep breath, breathe in, breathe out, yeah that's right, exactly like that..."
"Shut up, unnie. Don't you see that Oppa is still zoning out?"
"Should we make a cup of warm tea?"
"Good idea, Yoosung-ah! Gilyoung, make the tea! Make sure that you don't accidentally put salt instead of sugar in it."
Lee Gilyoung makes a salute gesture-- ('-')7 --and runs into the kitchen. Only for turns back two seconds later.
"Wait, what's the difference between salt and sugar?"
Han Sooyoung fights the urge to facepalm, then sighs. "Nevermind. I'll do it."
Meanwhile, Yoo Mia and Shin Yoosung already encircle the baby basket.
"What should we do with him? His cry is getting louder!"
"Maybe he's hungry? Should we give him some milk? How old is he?"
"He was born on February 15... That means he's only seven days old..."
"I'll go and buy formula." Suddenly, Yoo Joonghyuk says.
"Ah, Oppa! Are you okay?"
"...I'm fine, don't worry." He sighs, and then without saying anything else, he wears his coat and boots, then he goes break through the rain.
"Poor Joonghyuk-oppa. He looks so shocked."
Han Sooyoung appears from the kitchen while bringing a cup of tea. "Huh? Where's Yoo Joonghyuk?"
"He just went to buy formula."
"Oh, well, his tea will be cold already when he returns."
"May I have the tea, then?"
When Yoo Joonghyuk returns, he doesn't only bring formula, but also baby bottles, diapers, baby soaps and a couple of baby clothes and blankets.
That's how the chaos begins.
"Where's the formula? It isn't ready yet?"
"Oppa, why do you boil the bottle?"
"I'm sterilizing it."
"You better make it quick. He's getting hysterical."
"Maybe you should clean him first? I smell something nasty..."
O-ow. Han Sooyoung and Yoo Joonghyuk exchange glares. "Do you know how to do it?"
Yoo Joonghyuk rolls his eyes. "Of course. Just remove the diaper, then clean him and put him back in a new diaper."
"Yeah, but do you know how?"
"...I'll figure it out."
Han Sooyoung facepalms. Then she take her phone and starts searching 'how to change your baby's diaper' on the internet.
Four wide eyes stare at the phone intensely as if they want to bore a hole in it and read the article 'Step-by-Step Guide to Change Baby's Diaper' rapidly.
"Okay, let's do this!" Han Sooyoung claps her hands. She prepares warm water and a cloth, while Yoo Joonghyuk prepares a changing surface by placing a waterproof sheet on his bed. Yes, his bedroom. It evolves into baby's room now.
A bowl of warm water, a cloth, and a clean waterproof surface where a crying baby is lying on it. Now, they're ready to
battle do the worst part of having a newborn baby: changing its diaper.
Change the diaper. Check.
Feed the baby. Check.
Give him a bath. Check.
Rock him to sleep. On process.
"Why isn't he stop crying?" Han Sooyoung groans in frustation after the baby have cried for two hours nonstop.
Unsuprisingly, Yoo Joonghyuk is the one who have patience at most. Thanks to his experience to handle three (actually, it's four, if Han Sooyoung is included) children for years.
He swings the baby in his arms slowly and patiently, hopes that he gets to sleep soon, as it's getting dark and the other children (include Han Sooyoung) is starting to cry from hunger.
"OPPAAA, I'm starving!"
"Me too!" Han Sooyoung joins Yoo Mia's cry.
Yoo Joonghyuk glares at Han Sooyoung. "Then take the baby. I'll prepare dinner."
"Sure. Give him to me." Han Sooyoung says confidently.
So, Han Sooyoung takes over the baby, while Yoo Joonghyuk is preparing the dinner.
Surprisingly, the baby stops crying and starts to nuzzle against her breast.
"Kyahahahaha, stop it! It's ticklish!"
"Noona, what are you doing?"
"I think he's looking for my nipple. Aww, are you hungry again? I'm sorry, but this noona doesn't produce milk. Yoosung-ah, please prepare the formula."
"Okay!" She runs to the kitchen.
"But, Sooyoung-noona, I think you're not a 'noona' to him, but an 'ahjumma'."
"Shut up, Gilyoung. Sshhh, don't listen to him, okay, uh, Dokja? You will call me 'noona'."
Yoo Mia makes a face but doesn't complain.
Finally, Shin Yoosung returns with a bottle of formula.
When Han Sooyoung gives it to Kim Dokja, he immediately sucks it.
"Aw, you're really hungry, huh? Poor baby. Drink it well and then go to sleep, okay?"
Han Sooyoung lets him finish his milk, then lulls him to sleep while praying for the baby so that he just sleeps already, goddammit!
Fortunately, her prayer is answered.
After the baby is sleeping peacefully in Yoo Joonghyuk's bed and manages the pillow so it prevent the baby from falling of the bed, Han Sooyoung sneaks out of the bedroom.
"FUCKING FINALLY!" She hisses with relief.
She heads towards the kitchen where Yoo Joonghyuk and the children are having dinner.
Without a word, Yoo Joonghyuk slides a plate of her portion. Han Sooyoung mutters a quiet thanks and eats her dinner quietly.
"So... What will you do now?" Han Sooyoung asks Yoo Joonghyuk while he's washing the dishes. The children continue to watch their movie.
"...I don't know exactly, but I think I should report this to police."
"I agree, we need to know whose baby is it."
Yoo Joonghyuk nods.
"But, you know... They will need some time to find the parents and we don't know how long it will take. What will you do until then?"
Yoo Joonghyuk doesn't answer.
Han Sooyoung talks slowly, carefully picks the right words. "If you don't want to take care of the baby, you can put him in the orphanage, you know?"
"It maybe sounds cold-hearted, but I think you shouldn't feel guilty about it, he is not your child, he is not your responsibility... I mean, since you're just one-sidedly given the responsibility to taking care of someone else's child, you have the right to refuse it..."
"...I've been left alone since I was 13, while Mia, since she was four. We don't remember the warmth of parents' love. I've tried my best to become a parental figure for her, but apparently it's not enough."
"..." Han Sooyoung listens quietly.
"I know that sometimes she stares at our old family photos, maybe she hopes for a perfect family."
Yoo Joonghyuk pauses, and takes a deep breath. "I know how it feels like to be thrown away by your own parents."
Yoo Joonghyuk stares at the direction of his bedroom. When he sees the baby, he thinks that he can see what will the baby feels when he knows the bitter fact. Heart-broken, lonely, and unwanted.
"I think... I will take care of him for now. Until he find his parents, I'll become his parent."
Han Sooyoung smiles. "If that's what you want."
Then, she continues. "Let me know if I can do something for you. I'll do the best as I can."
"No, I'm serious. Just call me if you need help." She sighs. "But knowing you, I think you won't do it anyway. You will push to your limit and do everything by yourself."
"It's because I really don't need any help."
"Tsk, bullshit." She mutters under her breath. "You should trust the other people more, you know? More importantly, I don't want you to get baby blues."
Yoo Joonghyuk furrows his eyebrows. "What is that?"
"You don't wanna know." Han Sooyoung reaches out to pat Yoo Joonghyuk's shoulder. "It's already night. I should escort the children home."
"Thank you, Han Sooyoung." Yoo Joonghyuk smiles. He is grateful to have Han Sooyoung by his side. But of course, he won't say that out loud.
"No problem." Han Sooyoung smiles back.
