Lan Qiren and his nephews have successfully rescued 7-year-old Wei Ying from homelessness on the streets of Yunmeng, and he's overjoyed to finally have a home to go to. He knows - because Master Lan has told him - that the Cloud Recesses have a lot of rules and he might find it hard to live there at first, but he's hopeful that he has finally found where he belongs. They don't really expect him to follow all 3000 rules...right?
Wei Ying blinks hard against the characters swimming in front of his eyes. They steady for a moment, some unknown scribe’s clear, graceful lines sharpening briefly before they go all blurry again with a fresh round of tears. Wei Ying presses his lips together and continues copying anyway - he doesn’t have all the rules memorized of course, he’s not Lan Zhan, but this section is, unfortunately, one he’s familiar with.
Running is forbidden.
Causing noise is forbidden.
Sitting improperly is forbidden.
Do not stand incorrectly.
Do not smile foolishly.
Do not use frivolous words.
Do not exult in excess.
Do not laugh for no reason.
He doesn’t need to see them clearly to write them.

Lan Wangji has long hoarded every scrap of information that Wei Wuxian has dropped about himself. During their time together in the library, he pieces together a vague picture of Wei Wuxian’s life before he showed up at the gate of the Cloud Recesses with that infuriatingly beautiful smile of his. It’s vague and blurry because, as much as Wei Wuxian talks, it’s rarely about himself in any meaningful way.

The Cloud Recesses can only be found by those in need.
Lan Wangji sets out from his ancestral home to see the world and collect knowledge for his sect. Wei Wuxian leaves Lotus Pier to try and ease the tension for his siblings, assuming it will be better if he's gone for a while. Their paths cross and merge for a time. When they part, neither of them expect Wei Wuxian's path to lead him to the gates of the legendary Cloud Recesses, in need of help.

Where Wen Qing had a plan. A plan she didn’t tell anyone about.
Devastatingly, by the time Wei Ying finally remembers his own past, it’s far too late to change anything, his home already lost, the Yiling Patriarch long-since pronounced dead, and little A-Yuan having no one to rely on but him.
So, he decides to put his flute aside, to travel and stay away from anyone who might ever recognize him.
How he manages to then (kind of accidentally) start his own sect, made up of the various strays he picks up along the way, he honestly couldn’t even tell you.
