Legolas, prince of Mirkwood, is forever tainted by the harm done by his older brother. Legolas knows the creature that committed such atrocities wasn't the big brother who helped raised him, but a monster created from shadow, magic, and Sauron's doing. However, the inability of the rest of his kingdom to see him as anything more than a victim who should have died had led to rumors that he is sick and twisted too, that he found pleasure in his infliction. The only place he feels safe and at peace is in Imladris where Lord Elrond is always quick to assure him that he is a miracle. Elrond who is always helping him to heal, even if it's giving voice to the terrors that still plague him. Lord Elrond is the one who saved him from the monster that took his brother after all.
Too late, Legolas realizes he doesn't have to prove himself to Mirkwood, he already has a home with Elrond, but the patient Lord has been waiting for him to realize it on his own. Now he is committed to helping Frodo save their world, and hopefully redeeming himself to be good enough to stand next to the Lord he has come to love as his own.

Legolas is sent to Imladris on a mission for his father. He is going to Rivendell to research all there is to learn about Dol Guldur from Lord Elrond and his large library. Elrond is an imposing and impressive figure, someone Legolas is looking forward to meeting until it all goes wrong. Elrond and Legolas are not impressed with the other when they meet them, something that leads to misunderstanding after misunderstanding until they are both weary of each other.
Both Elrond and Legolas want to represent their homes well and both feel like they are failing. It feels impossible to leave the cycle of small talk and forced politeness they find themselves in. However, in time, books and nature are two things they realize they can agree upon, and that is where they glimpse that they might be more alike than they previously thought. They start to grow closer until they are on a cusp of something new entirely: something new and thrilling and terrifying. And then Legolas is called back to Mirkwood to complete his mission, leaving them both wondering what had just happened between them. Will these proud elves ever follow their hearts back to each other? Or will they choose to protect themselves-- cutting each other off forever?
