    Summary

Investigative journalist, Andy Sachs, hitting rock bottom in the concrete jungle of Manhattan, is given a lifeline by being commissioned a piece on a reclusive artist. This piece is supposed to finally be her ticket to journalistic fame and fortune. It proves to be a difficult task, since the artist is one who has the world of art and fashion enthralled for fifteen years and nobody has managed to discover who Priestly really is.

Or the one where Andy in trying to save her stagnant career, gets way in over her head, losing her heart in the process.

    Bookmarker's Notes

"You mean, begin with my apparent homosexuality," you prickle. Because the idea of talking about that aspect of your mental life is terrifying, so newly discovered to you that you cannot imagine dissecting it aloud, with someone else.

"No," she dismisses, having the gall to sound uninterested in the topic you just acknowledged. "In the image you still have of yourself as someone toxic and incapable of giving." Chap. 12

Chap 13 "Don't be ridiculous," you tell her. Sound every bit as scandalized as you feel. "This dress was exquisite on you and you will absolutely take it to Paris."

Chap 14 You hand Andréa this admission, knowing it will go farther. You stop far short of voicing the greater truth of your general apathy, even though you feel the words forming in your throat. It is too soon to make such dangerous statements. Even here, in the privacy and safety afforded to you by your trust in Andréa.
    ..................
You turn your head to find them, the person to your right merrily rattling on as you catch every other word, and over two more tables you spot Andréa standing next to her seat, a woman embracing her. You cannot hear their words - you're too far away, and the din of the crowd around fills the space between you. But it's clear Andréa is pleasantly surprised to see whoever this is. They sit next to each other and you watch as they chat through dinner. It's difficult to pinpoint the woman's age given how flawlessly she's maintained her pale skin. You would hazard a guess at late forties or perhaps early fifties.
    .......................
You bid Andréa goodnight, kissing her cheek the way she has taken to kissing yours. Apparently the gesture surprises her, and when you pull away she see a flash of something for just a moment, before her expression smooths back out into a congenial smile.

You close the door to your suite but remain there at the threshold. Press your warm forehead to smooth, cold wood of the door and attempt to focus on your breathing. Think back to Andréa's words earlier, and replay them now, her anguished voice echoing in your mind.

It doesn't have to change anything. I can still be your friend. I'm still the same person.

Andréa sometimes dates women. She sometimes dates older women. And there was a brief glimpse of an emotion on her face that you recognized, because you have seen it in the mirror since Andréa re-entered your orbit, swanning in on Peter's arm. It's the feeling you repressed at every turn, until it was no longer possible; you laid eyes on Andréa in your own silken nightgown, and knew then what it was.

    Desire.
