Slowly he lowered his shield, hesitantly reaching out towards the life forces he could feel. And then he was almost sent reeling as a mass of relief and concern hit him, Kanan feeling him the moment he had reached out.

He must have been waiting on Ezra, meditating to catch him the moment he could.

There was some lingering anger, disappointment but more then that was the concern. There was a slight hesitation before Ezra felt as if Kanan had just ruffled his hair, a 'its okay Ezra' feeling accompanying it.

He shook a bit before responding with a equal hesitantly push back, 'I'm sorry.' in return only to receive soft amusement. It was fine, but Kanan wanted him to come out and eat something more then a meal bar. Also apparently Chopper hadn't stopped zapping them, him and Zeb, for 'scaring' Ezra into the vents.

Ezra opened his eyes and looked at Sabine who tilted her head at him, colored strands of hair catching the light in the vent.

“...Okay.” He smiled a bit before shifting out of Sabine's arm and moving to the open vent, starting to crawl through it with practiced ease. The Mandalorien teen picked up the bag she'd used to bring water and food to Ezra and followed quickly, ready to get back out, beaming proudly that she'd managed to get him out. But perhaps she would have been the only one who could.

After all, no teens liked to disappoint their 'parents'.

“That’s not…” Vlad muttered. “/Why/? Why /any/ of this?” He asked as if the idea that Danny had travelled through time just for his sake was at the very least borderline ridiculous. Or perhaps it was the time travel, Danny wasn’t quite sure if he was being honest. It were quite a few things that Vlad had trouble comprehending, judging by his expression.

There were dozens of words stuck in his mouth, but he was unable to untangle them so instead Danny simply reached out his hand. Realising that in a little more elaborate way it was exactly what he’d done each time he’d stepped through Clockwork’s portal. Each time anew he’d metaphorically reached out his hand.

There was, for a split second, the faintest hint of a smile on Vlad’s face. A weaker version of the expression he’d shown all those years ago when he’d been stuck with his mother in the woods, but just as genuine.

“No trick,” Danny assured him when Vlad grabbed his hand, well aware of what he must’ve been reminded of. The shift he felt going through his being was mirrored in Vlad’s expression which suddenly relaxed. “Human?” He asked, carefully examining his hands to see if his skin tone had stopped being otherworldly.

“You should have just told me, badger,” Vlad chastised uncharacteristically friendly.

Closing his eyes Danny let his head sink against Vlad’s shoulder, pressing his lips together to keep them from quivering, but all he managed was a weak smile. “Right,” he scoffed with bitter amusement, “I should’ve just told you that I’m the son of the man you despise and the woman you love, and that I’ve time travelled to keep you company when you most need it because I was supposed to lose everything just because I cheated on a stupid test, just because of a /stupid/ mistake I was supposed to turn into a monster.” Danny swallowed in an attempt to keep his voice stable. “I should’ve just told you that.”

“This is off right?” Danny asked, feeling awfully silly for doing so in the first place but the fluttery feeling in his stomach wasn’t going to let him take another step without an answer to that question.

Clearly distracted Vlad replied, “Danny we both know your father is an idiot, but I like to believe that you inherited your mother’s braincells, by which I mean I wholeheartedly believe in your ability to tell for yourself whether the ghost portal is off or not.”

The corner of Danny’s mouth quirked upwards. Any other time he might had defended his father or at least given Vlad a reply of the same design, but right now he was more occupied with beating that stupid anxiety to a pulp so he could perform the task he’d been given.

“And the power has been cut off?”

“Of course, Daniel,” Vlad sighed. Briefly Danny felt his eyes on him, as if Vlad glanced over his back.

“Cool,” Danny muttered and gathered all his courage to step into the portal. It was only a little step, but felt much bigger to him. “Just making sure, cause you know, the first time I died it was in one of these fuckers that wasn’t supposed to work...” Within a few quick steps Danny had reached the end of the portal and found the open panel. And just like Vlad had said he could simply insert the card-like devices into the empty slots. “Do you want me to close the panel?” Danny asked, studying the plate which had covered the panel.

When Vlad didn’t answer and he couldn’t find the screws he shrugged and happily exited the portal again. “I asked if you wanted the panel closed,” he repeated, frowning at Vlad’s stare. “Something… on my face?”

    “You /what/?”

Somehow, Danny was sure Vlad wasn’t as calm as he sounded when he asked that. “I… died in there?” He offered, glancing back at the portal and vaguely gesturing at it. “Well, not /that/ one, the one my parents built… Vlad?”

The corners of Vlad’s mouth raised like chews for the briefest of moments to bare his teeth and something cold had overshadowed his eyes. The word that came out of his throat was almost inhuman but Danny understood it perfectly anyway. – “/Jack/.” It was followed by a string of insults.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Their son was tired. He could see the shadows beneath his eyes, he could see the way his eyes dropped, in Wisconsin where there were barely any ghosts to drive away, he could probably sleep fully for the first time in months.

Daniel was also scared. He could see the way the boy flinched at the sudden movements of his parents, the way the boy relaxed when they were out of sight but tensed when they came nearer. The boy unknowingly relaxed in his own presence, most likely his ghost core sensing someone similar to him.

Vlad sat up, he needed to work out a plan, would he play the mentor figure, someone in the distance with the ability to help train the boy, someone who can help him get stronger and in turn help to boy grow past his parents, someone to help the boy grow into his true potential?

    Or…

Could he be the child’s uncle? The comments had been made last night, and if he recalled neither children had godparents, just distant relatives. He could truly be someone that both children, no, both teenagers could come to for help and advice, Jasmine could come for advice on schools, on work; Daniel too could come for advice on education, and for help with his new abilities.

He could be there for him, help to distract his parents when needed, help to train him to be stronger at his own will, help him to understand not only life as a halfa but also to understand the ghost zone.
