    MARTIN
I keep expecting someone to come ‘round and say, “Oh, sorry, big mistake, you’re not meant to be here”— but it hasn’t happened yet, so. (awkward laugh)

    JON
I’m— Is it weird that I’m looking forward to technicals? (beat) Well, I am.

    MELANIE
Yeah, I’m not scared of Elias. I used to investigate hauntings, so I’m pretty used to pasty old guys hovering over me.

There are no supernatural entities in the world, and there never have been; the wildest thing currently happening in Martin Blackwood's life is that he's about to compete in his first episode of The Great British Bake Off.

A story about bread, starry summer evenings, and learning to love life again.

“Oh, right, see—the, the problem with trying to make someone jealous like that is it just shows how much you still care about the other person, right? Like, I really do not give a shit if Peter hooks up with someone else. I honestly wish he would.” The man downs the rest of his whiskey. “It would make my life a hell of a lot easier,” he mutters into the glass.

“I—I get that,” Jon says somewhat stiltedly. He’s still confused as to what exactly this guy wants, and who he is, and why they’re still talking.

“What I’m saying is that I don’t care if Peter flirts with someone all night, but he’s proving to me right now that he would definitely care if I did. And I’m guessing it’s the same for your ex?”

“Oh,” Jon says as he suddenly gets it. "Oh."

“So….” The other man taps his fingernails against his now-empty glass. Jon realizes he looks rather nervous. “Uh, I’m Martin, by the way.”

It wasn’t meant to happen the first time, and Gerry swears it will never happen again. So it’s only natural that he bends Bouchard over his perfect desk several days later.

Or: Artist Gerard Keay and literature professor Dr. Elias Bouchard dislike each other immensely; they were bound to fall in love someday.

    Summary

“He deserves to be thrown in jail,” Jon says as Portugal takes the stage with a slow, heart-rending ballad, waving his wine glass around for effect. How many other, similar, inconsequential hills does he have to die on?, Martin wonders warmly. It’s as if the man sitting with his legs curled under him on Martin’s sofa, yelling at his telly, is a completely different person to the Head Archivist of Magnus Institute, London, Martin has known for over a year.

It's meant to be a one-time thing, inviting Martin over to watch Eurovision with him, and only because Martin is staying in the Archives and their dusty basement space is no place to watch the finals. Jon does not mean to start a yearly tradition.

    Summary

So. Martin isn't expecting anything to happen. But then, one day, something...does happen. It happens when Martin is passing Jon in the hall, and stops to ask how he’s doing, because Jon always looks a little bit like hell these days, and it makes Martin feel like he has to do something, and useless small talk is pretty much all he can do, so that’s what he does. And instead of grunting or shrugging or mumbling something dismissive, Jon replies, with perfect, involuntary clarity, "Every part of me aches, and I would just about kill to have someone rub my shoulders right now."

There's a positively deafening silence as they both come to grips with this unprecedented turn of events. Then they both start talking at once.

    "Ah." says Jon.

"Wow." says Martin, at the same time.
