For a moment, he felt it, resentment coiling in his gut.
He feels so done.
At eighteen, Wei Wuxian realized, he's done.
"What does Yu-furen want me to do?"
"I want you gone from our lives! Away! Somewhere I cannot see you!"
"From this day forth, I, Wei Wuxian is renouncing my title as the Head Disciple of Yunmeng-Jiang."
In which after they were saved from the Xuanwu Cave, Wei Wuxian was punished by Yu Ziyuan and he has decided that he had enough. Wei Wuxian defected from Yunmeng-Jiang Sect. He left and he did not look back.
“Ah, the rabbits.”
“You saw them? I wanted to bring some but I figured that Lan Zhan could use some friends.”
“You said the rabbits have ribbons?”
“Yes they do, but they didn’t have it when I returned. I think it vanished with Ancestor Lan Yi’s spirit.”
Lan Xichen’s brows furrowed. Why does he feel like he missed something?
And in which Lan Xichen realized that something more happened in the Cold Pond Cave.
Or a story where Wei Wuxian defected from Yunmeng-Jiang Sect before the attack and what happened to him and everyone else after that.
In order to make Wei Wuxian feel welcome at the Cloud Recesses, and to make sure people give him the respect he deserves (and definitely not to get into his pants), Lan Wangji hires him to be his advisor.
“Lan Zhan, did you hire me just so you could punish people for disrespecting me?”
“No,” Lan Wangji said. “It is a side benefit.”
“Why did you hire me?”
“Because you are knowledgeable and skilled,” Lan Wangji said, “and I trust you to assist me in my work.”
Because everything is easier with you around and because I feel like a part of me is missing without you and because you can say things I can’t and because I need you he did not say.
“And you secretly like being a bitch to people,” Wei Wuxian added, with a sly grin.

“I will tell you what my intentions towards him are not,” Lan Wangji said. “I do not intend to blame him for a strategically planned attack carried out in the course of a campaign to destabilize the major sects. I do not intend on listening silently doing nothing while the whole world slanders him. I do not intend to stab him and kick him out of my sect for being the only one bold enough to stand for justice. I do not intend to bring an army to persecute him for defending himself during an ambush. I do not intend to help him commit suicide. I do not intend to whip him and then torture him with the thing he fears the most in this world. I do not intend to insult him while he is trying to pay his respects to the memory of his family. I do not intend to attack him when he is seriously injured from saving my life and the lives of half the cultivation world.

They are all called to enter the room that has been delegated to this event, they move in the most orderly manner Wei Wuxian has ever seen them move. That is how much they respect the Lan sect— or how much they fear them.
When he is escorted to the middle of the room, the cultivators part in front of him, going to their own seats, leaving him there, with two Lan disciples at his sides. Wei Wuxian bows to show his respect to Hanguang-jun, who is seated on the elevated seat that he makes look like a throne.
“Approach,” Hanguang-jun says. His voice is firm and authoritative, the voice of a leader, a commander.
Wei Wuxian obeys.
In which Wei Wuxian figures out quickly that he isn't meant to be a hostage, but he doesn't quite know how to deal with the fact that he is being treated like an esteemed guest. He isn't complaining though.
