Any Version of Reality

“Go away,” Catra muttered, curling up tighter and trying to disappear into the corner. Adora didn’t move.
“Are… you mad at me?” Her voice was small and uncertain. Catra’s ears flattened against her head; she closed her eyes. “I… I’m sorry if I made you feel bad, I didn’t mean to—”
“Just leave me alone!” Catra huffed. “Go play with your new friend Lonnie.”
“Are you mad about Lonnie?” Adora was so stupid sometimes. “She’s just like Entrapta and Scorpia—”
“No she’s not! She’s normal, you can be human with her!” Tears pressed against her eyelids, threatening to escape. There was a sudden shuffle of feet; Catra thought Adora was running away, but then a heavy body dropped on top of her, hugging her curled up form as tight as possible.
“I don’t want to be human with her,” Adora said stubbornly. “I’d rather be a wolf with you. You’re my best friend.”
Catra face was pressed into her knees, muffling her voice as she mumbled, “You promise?”
“I promise,” Adora replied without hesitation.

First, shared thought: Oh, she’s pretty.
Catra’s second thought: Wait.
Adora’s second thought: Is that a knife?!
Adora’s third thought: Wait, I know that face.
Of course she knew that face. She’d spent more time paying attention to it in Biology last semester than she had the teacher.
“What the fuck – Grayskull?!”
Catra and Adora run into each other in... unusual circumstances.

“Mmhm.” She was suspicious, which was fair, Adora thought. It probably all seemed sketchy. “And what would you get out of this?”
“Your company.” Catra raised an eyebrow. “I’m serious. I live a very… isolated life. It’s hard to make friends when you’re running one of the biggest companies in the country.”
Catra opened and closed her mouth a few times, clearly stunned. Adora had to smirk a little, proud of herself for that reaction. “Here.” She pulled out her wallet, counting out a few hundred dollar bills. Three went on the table for the meal, and for the waitress, and two went to Catra, along with a business card. “Think about it. Call me if you’re interested.”
“And if I’m not?”
Adora shrugged, standing. “Then you just got a free meal to listen to me talk. Not a bad trade off, right?”
She didn’t want to be too smug, but she was pretty sure she had Catra’s attention as she walked away.

Catra ran away from home, from her best friend and from her mistakes after a drunken car accident nearly killed her and Adora.
It takes three more years and a mental breakdown for Catra to finally get her life together and to a place that's good and healthy. She's happy, and accepted that Adora will never be part of her life again. She's made peace with the past.
At least until the past comes back to bite her.

A weird sense of déjà vu washed over Adora. Catra was standing in the hall, smirking, and Adora was frozen. Weird how a pretty girl could completely short-circuit her brain.
“So are we dating?”
Catra laughed, hands in her pockets. “Wow, right to the point? Do you want to call Entrapta and let her know the answer?”
Adora blushed. “Oh, um… right, sorry. Do you want to come in? I got the pizza already, and — she just got me thinking about it, I mean, we’ve been seeing each other awhile now, and I feel like we’re dating, but we haven’t even kissed, and—”
And she was being cut off by a pair of gentle lips pressing against hers. “If you wanted to kiss me, you could’ve just asked,” Catra murmured as she pulled away. Damn it she was smooth. Adora did her best not to stutter.
“I mean… I can’t really complain about these results, right?”
