Work Text:

It was an awful day at work. I couldn’t figure out the murder yet and not a single lead. At least I knew the cause of death. The victim was a young man, not much older than one of my nephews, and had so much life left to live. He was engaged too.

I parked the car in my driveway, got Dog out of the car, grabbed the keys and walked to my front door. I could barely open the door, but once I did, I greeted by my loving wife Elisa who looked up from her book as the news drudged on about the events of the world and then some.

“Chili’s in the fridge, dear.”

“That’s wonderful, darling.”

“Frank?”

“Yeah?”

“Could you snuff out that cigar?”

“Oh, yeah…sure.”

She could tell I was worn out. I didn’t want her to be too concerned so I heated up the chili, grabbed a thing of crackers, and started eating. I could hear the TV reporting today’s news. Elisa shut off the TV when she saw my expression upon the murder report being read.

“Frank?”

“Yeah.”

“You okay?”

“I’m fine.”

“No you’re not. Talk to me, honey.”

“Okay, okay. There was a case, as you know, and well…”

“Yes?”

“He, he was not as old as one of our nephews.”

“Are you serious?”

“Unfortunately. He was engaged too. I just don’t know what to do.”

“Frank, it’s not your fault. Are there any leads?”

“None yet.”

“I can’t believe this.”

“I couldn’t either, Elisa.”

“I made you some cookies. Let me go and get them.”

“Elisa, you didn’t have to do all that.”

“It’s the least I could do. Besides, you work really hard, Frank.”

“Thank you, Elisa.”

“Of course, Frank. Are you working late tonight?”

“I imagine I’ll be called in later. Why?”

“So I can pack you something quick to eat. I picked you up a to-go cup. I’ll make you a cup before you go.”

“You don’t have to do all of that, Elisa.”

“I want to. You do so much for me as is, it’s not that bad.”

“Okay. Only if you want to.”

“I do.”

“I remember the first time you said those words.”

“You do.”

“I do. You looked absolutely beautiful. I couldn’t help but tear up.”

“You looked very handsome, too. Especially in a black tuxedo.”

“Do you remember when the cake cutting ceremony?”

“I do!”

“Do you remember how, when we served it, you then you wiped the frosting onto my face?”

“It was a laugh riot!”

“I’ve never been so happy to be wearing cake a day in my life! And to think, the one who did it, is the person that I love the most.”

“Frank…”

“I mean it, Elisa. I could never be with anyone else. I mean, I’ve got everything with you. You know karate, how to get Dog’s attention, and how to make a mean chili.”

“Anything that makes you feel better, or helps in anyway, shape, or form. I love you, Frank.”

“I love you too, Elisa.”

I didn’t realize that I finished my chili until Elisa laughed.

“I’m glad you enjoyed the chili.”

“It was really good!”

“Thank you! I didn’t want to make it too spicy, and I didn’t want to make it bland either.”

“It was great, Elisa.”

“I’m glad you liked it. Got room for dessert?”

“What’d ya bake?”

“Your favorite.”

“Chocolate cake? Sweetheart, you already made me some cookies. You didn’t have to do all that.”

“Yep! I made Dog a pup cake. I don’t mind baking you two treats every now and then.”

“That’s really sweet, Elisa.”

I kissed her cheek softly and watched her grab the cakes out of the fridge. Dog got very excited to dig into his. I waited until she cut the cake before grabbing a fork. When I turned around, she put some chocolate frosting on my nose. We both laughed like a couple of kids.

“I love you, Elisa.”

“I love you too, Frank. Say, why don’t we go get some sleep soon. God only knows when, or even if, you’re going to work tonight.”

“I hope not. Do you know how long it’s been since I got some actual sleep? Or even some sleep with the one person that I want to wake up to?”

“Three days.”

“You kept track?”

“I did.”

“I-“

“No need to explain, dear. I know it’s due to your job. It’s okay.”

“Thank you, sweetheart.”

“You’re welcome.”

I finished my slice of cake in comfortable silence and so did Dog.

“That was delicious, Elisa. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, now let’s get to bed. You look extremely exhausted.”

“I feel that way too. Lead the way, darling.”

Elisa grabbed my hand and guided me up the stairs carefully. I almost tripped over my feet but Elisa took her time with me, and even took care of my coat for me. I didn’t even know that I still had it on, same with my shoes and tie.

We curled up in bed together, myself nestled on top of her with her nails running over my scalp, fingers running through my hair, and she hummed a song to help get me to sleep. I wasn’t called in that night, but I didn’t care. I was comfortable with finally being with my wife. I just hope we have many more nights like this soon.
