Phone Call

Work Text:

The phone rings. Gwendolyn picks up.

“Gwendolyn Briggs speaking.”

“He's gone.”

“He killed Huck.” The statement is panicked and hushed.

“He almost killed Betsy.”

“Mildred, what's happened?”

“Edmund!” She sounds scared and frustrated. Gwendolyn remains silent for a moment, trying to catch up. Finally the information clicks into place and her immediate response is:

“Did he hurt you?” The only question that really matters.

“No. I-- he left. I saw him leave. He drove right past me.” She almost sounds lost and that scares Gwendolyn. “Huck's dead.” Mildred breathes. “He could have killed Betsy.”

“Darling, what can I do? What do you need?” She hears Mildred's sharp inhale through the line followed by a slow breath out. Good. She's focusing.

“Don't leave,” she says, her tone more Nurse Ratched than Gwen's Mildred. “Make sure all the doors and windows are locked and don't answer the door, for anyone. I'll be there as soon as I can. And Gwendolyn?”

“Yes, Mildred?”

Her next words are quiet but fierce.

“I love you.”

Gwendolyn's heart clenches.

“I love you too. Please be careful.”
