Work Text:

“The law cannot protect these women.”

“Yes, and nobody knows that better than I do. I live  there. We’ve both seen abuse. We put abusers in prison.”

“What about the ones we couldn’t?”

Those words stuck with her. Alex was right, she knew the law was faulty, and couldn’t protect every victim. It couldn’t protect the ones that couldn’t protect themselves. After the explosion in her office, Olivia packed her things up and headed out for the evening. She needed to be anywhere but here. She wanted to be home, holding Noah close to her body.

Her heart ached for Ruby, she would never see her mother again. She promised Jules that she would help her, keep her safe, and her abuser got to her before she could hold onto that promise. That tore at her. She wasn’t sure if it was because it was a case that she worked with Alex, or if it was just her motherly intuition, but it ached.

Olivia’s phone buzzed in her hand and she looked down to see a text from Alex. She was shocked, but a small part of her was relieved that she was texting her.

‘waiting for you outside.’

Olivia bit her lip nervously and made her way outside of the precinct, the blonde leaning against the brick.

“Hey.” Olivia offered a smile.

Alex was pulled out of her thoughts and glanced over at her and smiled back.

“I’m leaving in a few days and I didn’t want our last conversation for now, to end as a screaming match.” Alex laughed softly.

Olivia smiled and the two walked side by side into the New York night.

It had been no secret of the feelings the two shared for each other, but they had never been acted on. Olivia knew well enough how a relationship with an ADA would end, let alone a relationship with Alex would end. She trusted Alex with every ounce of her being, but she knew, they both knew, at the end of the day, it was best for them to remain friends.

It didn’t stop them in the past from sharing quick glances at each other, shameless flirting when no one was around. It gave them the reassurance that they were both on the same page.

Alex listened as Olivia talked about the cockroaches she saw on the subway and chuckled. She stopped and looked at Olivia, studying the new laugh lines on her face, the glow that she had radiating under the city street lamp.

“Are you proposing we work together?” Alex questioned.

Olivia sighed softly, taking in the sight of the blonde. She had always been so beautiful, her blue eyes were always so piercing.

“I could never do what you do, Alex.” Olivia shook her head.

Alex nodded slowly and smiled, “And I can’t stop.”

Olivia looked at her again and extended her arms, and Alex immediately wrapped her arms around Olivia’s body and held onto her, as if she had done this a million times before.

They rarely shared physical contact, they had hugged a handful of times, and each time feeling like they could both get lost in each other. They knew it wad against the unspoken rule they had laid out, but Olivia didn’t know if she would ever see Alex after this. It had been years since they last spoke, and even then, that was another goodbye the both of them didn’t want to face.

Alex nuzzled her face into the crook of Olivia’s neck, the scent of her perfume captivating her. Olivia squeezed her body a little tighter when Alex made the movement and closed her eyes for a moment. She felt like home.

Olivia ran her hands down the sides of Alex’s arms as she pulled and held her there for a moment. She glanced down at Alex’s lips, and met her eyes again. Olivia leaned in, placing a soft kiss to her lips, Alex quickly responding.

Alex wrapped her arms back around her waist, not wanting this moment to end. Alex kissed her again, a little harder this time, gently biting Olivia’s bottom lip as she pulled away. It had taken them twenty years for this to finally happen, and it was everything they needed.

Olivia smiled as they pulled away, and squeezed Alex’s hand.

“Take care of yourself, Alex.”

“Okay.” Alex nodded with a small smile, her hand slowly slipping out of Olivia’s grasp as she walked away.
