Somebody To You

Work Text:

I used to wanna be
Living like there's only me
But now I spend my time
Thinking 'bout a way to get you off my mind
I used to be so tough
Never really gave enough
And then you caught my eye
Giving me the feeling of a lightning strike

It all began in a Christmas sleepover decades ago.

Fang Rui was playing “Truth or Dare” with the other boys while nibbling the cookies he had stolen from the girls downstairs.

“Fang Rui, truth or dare?” Yu Wenzhou asked Fang Rui.

“Dare,” Fang Rui blurted out. To him, the truth was only for the weak and the losers.

Yu Wenzhou’s smile turned into a slight smirk.

“I dare you to give Chu Yunxiu a peck on the cheek.”

Fang Rui remained calm, but inside, he was going crazy. Did he really have to give a peck to a girl he did not know well?

Nevertheless, Fang Rui wanted to get this dare off his mind as it was the only thing that mattered to him.

Fang Rui quickly tip-toed his way downstairs and quietly sneaked behind the girls’ sight. Though he was nearly caught red-handed, the girls were too busy with painting their nails. He waited until it was an opportune time for him to fulfill his dare.

Time to make my move, Fang Rui smirked before he sprang out of his hiding place and gave Chu Yunxiu a peck on her cheek.

Chu Yunxiu’s face turned beet red, and Fang Rui let out a nervous chuckle.

“Yah, Fang Rui!” Chu Yunxiu yelled. “Get back here!”

Chu Yunxiu chased Fang Rui, but it was of no use as he dashed his way upstairs already. He smiled out of satisfaction as Chu Yunxiu continued to rant about the sudden disruption.

“He’s gonna pay for all of this! This is a girls only place, no boys allowed!”

Fang Rui stayed upstairs with the other boys for a while until Chen Guo called them for present time downstairs. After everyone found their spots to sit down, Ye Xiu scooted closer to say something.

“Fang Rui, you’re such a shameless kisser. One day, you’re going to break the hearts of many girls.”

“Ah, Ye Xiu. It’s really nothing, but I gotta admit Sister Chu is cute.”

And that was only the beginning of something more.

Look at me now, I'm falling
I can't even talk, still stuttering
This ground I'm on, it keeps shaking
Oh, oh, oh, now!

Years passed, and both Fang Rui and Chu Yunxiu grew up to be excellent and competent professional gamers in their respective teams, Happy and Misty Rain.

Ever since Chu Yunxiu moved to Suzhou, they did not talk with each other as much as before. The only times both of them chatted was when she became the captain of Misty Rain, congratulating her like any other friend did, when Fang Rui first debuted in Wind Howl, and when Fang Rui transferred to Happy.

Other than the fact that they were now grown ups and lived in different cities, they were still the children that they used to be inside. Even though Fang Rui did not interact with Chu Yunxiu as much as he used to do, his feelings for her still kindled just as strong as he was when he was a boy.

Season 10 had been a blast for Fang Rui and his team. Some days were terrible, others were terrific, and some more were interesting.

And his team’s match against Misty Rain was one of the third. It was the first time Fang Rui met Chu Yunxiu since a while ago. While he was excited for the match, he was even more excited to meet Chu Yunxiu again.

Team Happy ended up winning the match and, as per custom for post-matches, both teams bowed down to each other. Both Fang Rui and Chu Yunxiu bowed before they caught each other in the eye.

“H-hi…” Fang Rui stuttered, forgetting nearly all the things he was about to say.

“Hello,” Chu Yunxiu responded.

“Uh-uh, g-good game. You did good.”

“It’s because of your tactics.”

Fang Rui gave Chu Yunxiu a flabbergasted look.

“W-w-what tactics?”

"Scram, your tactics are wretched, you are also wretched!”

Chu Yunxiu stormed off before she rejoined with her teammates. Fang Rui became even more confused.

Why would Chu Yunxiu storm off like that? I only played my game.

All I wanna be, yeah, all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah
Is somebody to you
All I wanna be, yeah, all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah
Is somebody to you
Everybody's tryna be a billionaire
But every time I look at you, I just don't care
'Cause all I wanna be, yeah, all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah
Is somebody to you

Their first meeting in a while was a blunder, but the second one turned into one accidental date.

A day before All-Stars Weekend began, Fang Rui was walking past Beijing's boutique shops in the search for the mall known for its arcades.

Where could this mall be? thought Fang Rui before he saw a huge building right across him.

Ah, there it is!

He ran quickly to the other side before he accidentally bumped into Chu Yunxiu hard, causing her to drop her shopping bags to the concrete road.

Fang Rui instinctively picked up her bags and gave them back to her.

Though Fang Rui apologized, Chu Yunxiu was not happy.

“Watch your way next time.”

“I-I-I was in a rush because…”

“Ugh, thanks for picking up my bags,” Chu Yunxiu said begrudgingly.

“W-w-wait, Sister Chu. Where do you want to go?” Fang Rui asked without a second thought.

“To the arcade.”

“Same. May I carry your bags, Sister Chu?

“Sure, Fang Rui.”

They both went to the arcade, and they both had so much fun that all of the awkwardness and embarrassment evaporated to thin air.

At least Fang Rui felt like he was somebody to Chu Yunxiu. In a good way, of course.

I used to run around
I didn't wanna settle down
But now, I wake each day
Looking for a way that I can see your face
I've got your photograph
But baby, I need more than that
I need to know your lips
Nothing ever mattered to me more than this

Since that day, Fang Rui and Chu Yunxiu became closer friends than ever. Unbeknownst to them, there had been rumors surrounding their interactions and whether they were dating or not.

Fang Rui was not the type of person to settle down for anything, but the best. Sure, he tolerated being defeated by Ye Xiu when he first transferred to Happy, but he hated having to hold back his feelings for the sake of his friendship with Chu Yunxiu. He had to find ways to let her know of his feelings without her actually knowing it, and he was running out of ideas.

Frustrated, Fang Rui went to Bao Zi out of all people to confide about this issue.

“Just tell her that you like her,” Bao Zi said.

“Not that, Bao Zi. What else can you think of?” Fang Rui insisted.

“Well, the only other idea I can think of is to kiss her.”

Fang Rui was shocked upon hearing that, but he had done it anyway before.

“Fine, I’ll try,” Fang Rui agreed.

Fang Rui retreated to his dorm and texted Chu Yunxiu.

Fang Rui: Meet me at the cafe by 12.

Chu Yunxiu: Ok

Fang Rui put his phone away to ponder on Bao Zi’s advice. On one hand, Bao Zi’s suggestion was a surefire way to ruin his friendship; but on the other, Fang Rui had secretly long for this for years.

Look at me now, I'm falling
I can't even talk, still stuttering
This ground I'm on, it keeps shaking
Oh, oh, oh, now!

The next day, Chu Yunxiu met Fang Rui at the cat cafe as promised.

The cafe had a wide range of cats, which was not limited to Tabby, Persian, and Calico cats. The owner was none other than Wang Jiexi’s cousin, who also loved cats much like her popular relative. She greeted the two with a warm smile and led them to their table.

“What do you want to order?” the owner asked as she pulled out her tablet to take orders.

“May I get one iced Americano, one caramel frappuccino, and one slice of red velvet cake please?” Fang Rui replied.

“Sure.” The owner took notes on his order on her tablet. “Anything else?”

“No, thank you.”

“Alright, your orders will be here in a few minutes.”

The owner left both of them to notify the baristas and chefs of the order.

“How do you know that I like to drink caramel frappuccino?” Chu Yunxiu asked.

“You told me before when I asked you what type of coffee you like to drink,” Fang Rui responded.

“Fair enough. And what about the red velvet cake?”

“I don’t know if you like red velvet cake, too. Red velvet has been my favorite forever.”

A Russian Blue cat suddenly jumped onto Chu Yunxiu’s lap.

“Oh, hi kitty,” Chu Yunxiu cooed at the cat. Her hands gently rubbed on the cat’s fur. “You are so soft and cute.”

“But not as cute as you,” Fang Rui said before he stopped himself. “Wait, did I say that?”

“Yup, why?”

“Uh, I actually have something to tell you.”

All I wanna be, yeah, all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah
Is somebody to you
All I wanna be, yeah, all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah
Is somebody to you
Everybody's tryna be a billionaire
But every time I look at you, I just don't care
'Cause all I wanna be, yeah, all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah
Is somebody to you

Both of them were silent for a minute until Chu Yunxiu broke the ice.

“Sure, what is it?”

“I actually really like you,” Fang Rui confessed. “The moment I was dared by Yu Wenzhou to give you a peck fifteen years ago, I didn't even have you in my mind. I just want to get over my dare, but boy was I wrong. I like you, but because I thought you hated me for giving you one, I didn’t tell you how I really feel about you.”

“Fang Rui, I never hate you,” Chu Yunxiu spoke to him softly. “Yes, I may be grumpy because of many things. You stole my cookies, you surprised me with a kiss, you played dirty, and there are just many things I can dislike you for. But no, I like you.”

Fang Rui was taken aback by her statement.

“So you never hate me for all this time?”

“No, Fang Rui. I love you.” Chu Yunxiu answered before giving him a quick kiss on his lips.

“I have been waiting for this, Fang Rui. Do you want to be my boyfriend?”

Fang Rui, face crimson from the sudden kiss, uttered, “Yes.”
