Ghostbusters: Ghost Town

Work Text:

Ghostbusters: Ghost Town (A sequel to a sequel written in 24 hours)

Play this song - 5 Years Later

White text against a black background reminiscent of Ghostbusters 2 that reads: 5 Years Later .

INT - MUSEUM BASEMENT - EVENING

We pass by a series of artifacts that aren’t ready for exhibit yet. Egyptian, Mayan, Civil War… It’s a real hodge podge of materials. We zoom in on an old book. A breeze blows. A few pages turn. Then stops.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Did you feel that?

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Huh?

MUSEUM WORKER 1

It’s cold in here. Close the window.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Oh. Ok.

Museum Worker 2 goes to close the window only to find that they’re in a windowless basement.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Uh… It’s closed.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Thanks.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Man. This sure is a lot of stuff.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Backlog for days. Centuries actually. They really don’t pay us enough for this.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

They don’t pay anyone enough for anything around here.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Ain’t that the truth.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Hey. Take a look at this.

The other museum worker turns to see their coworker wearing an old mask. They probably shouldn’t be doing that but… Oh well.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Cool, huh?

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Take that off.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

You’re no fun.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

We’re not down here to goof off. We’re down here to clean. Say. Can you turn the tv on. It’s too quiet down here.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

We could talk about something. You know, have a conversation?

A beat.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Turn the tv on.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

(mimicking quietly)

Turn the tv on. Turn the tv on.

Museum Worker 2 turns the small tv on. It’s a Ghostbusters commercial. We see the kids of the Ghostbusters we have come to know in the previous film pop up one by one. The commercial could not be more awkward. They’re just like their parents.

EDDIE

Are you troubled by strange noises in the middle of the night?

MAGGIE

Do you experience feelings of dread in your basement or attic?

NICHELLE

Have you or your family ever seen a spook, specter, or ghost?

OSCAR

If the answer is yes then don’t wait another minute. Pick up your phone and call the professionals.

ALL GHOSTBUSTER KIDS

Ghostbusters.

RAY

Our courteous and efficient staff is on call-

MUSEUM WORKER 1

This sounds really familiar.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

I think they’re just using the same words from the old one.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Lazy.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

(shrugs)

If it works.

Museum Worker 1 finds the open book.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Hey. Look at this.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Thought that we weren’t down here to goof around or talk.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

No seriously. Look. Have you ever seen a book like this?

MUSEUM WORKER 2

No.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Me either. It’s really old.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Everything is old here.

(reads)

Agoth’s Book of Spells. Whoah.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Oh come on. You don’t believe in that kind of thing, do ya?

MUSEUM WORKER 2

No. I mean yes. I mean no. I mean… Kind of?

MUSEUM WORKER 1

(mimicking)

I mean no.. I mean yes.. I mean kind of.

(laughs)

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Shut up.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Well, if you don’t believe in it-

They shove the book over to Museum Worker 2.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Read one.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Huh?

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Read one. Unless you’re scared.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

I’m not scared.

(begins to read)

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Aloud.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Ok. Ok. I knew that. I was getting to it.

(big breath)

Oh spirit hear my plea, come forth before me. I hope that I can be forgiven for this deed, as I permit for you to come to the world of the living and feed. Goddess of protection hear me on this day, protect my own spirit and keep harm far at bay. Protect my own spirit and keep harm far at bay. Protect my own spirit and keep harm far at bay.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Dark.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

There. I did it.

All at once the basement lights flicker. The wall quakes. The worker drops the book onto the floor and the pages begin to turn madly. Things levitate. A purple energy spews from the book and swirls creating something before them.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Maybe I shouldn’t have done it.

Slowly but surely a feminine figure is created before them. They are stunning.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

No. You should have.

MUSEUM WORKER 2

Whoah.

THE ONE

I was summoned.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

You were.

THE ONE

Who here was the summoner?

MUSEUM WORKER 1

I can be whatever you want me to be-

MUSEUM WORKER 2

It was me-

MUSEUM WORKER 1

But I told you to do it-

MUSEUM WORKER 2

But I was the one who did it.

The two get into a little shoving match.

THE ONE

Who read from the book?

MUSEUM WORKER 2

(raises his hand)

Me.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

(disappointed)

Lucky.

THE ONE

Oh you have no idea.

She gestures over to Museum Worker 1 who perks up and approaches her. She wraps her arms around his neck affectionately.

MUSEUM WORKER 1

Maybe I’m the lucky one.

THE ONE

Maybe.

She leans forward to kiss him. He kisses back. It’s hot… But then… It’s not. The worker’s energy is being sucked right out of him as The One breathes it in. He’s like a juice box being squeezed slowly, losing all of his contents. The one’s hands turn from human like to long, sharp bones as she holds onto his back tightly. Then, she releases him and he collapses to the floor dead.

THE ONE

Mm…  There’s nothing like the first drink of the decade.

(looks to Museum Worker 2)

So, Reader of the Book, no hello? Where are your manners?

MUSEUM WORKER 2

(screams)

In horror Museum Worker 2 hightails it out of the basement. The One reaches out as if to cast a spell to stop them but it fizzles. She sighs.

THE ONE

Guess I’m a bit rusty. No matter. Nothing a few drinks won’t fix.

It is when she is about to leave that she notices the end of the commercial.

EDDIE

-A family run business since 1984.

Yellow text flashes on the screen that reads Not Consecutively .

WINSTON

Our staff has never been bigger which means we’ve never had as much man-

MAGGIE

People-

WINSTON

-People power to handle all of your supernatural elimination needs.

OSCAR

Ghostbusters.

ALL GHOSTBUSTER KIDS

We’re still ready to believe you!

ALFRED, NICHELLE, & WINSTON

There’s nothing we can’t handle.

THE ONE

Zeddemore…

INT - GHOSTBUSTERS FIREHOUSE - DAY

A phone rings at Arthur Peck’s desk. A manicured hand answers it. It belongs to no other than Janine Tully.

JANINE

Ghostbusters. What do ya want? Uh huh. Uh huh. Uh huh. I see. Well that is a problem. I swear sir, discretion is their number one priority. Right. They’ll be there in a jiffy.

She hangs up. Stands and yells.

JANINE

We got one!

Play this song - Phoenix

We see the Ghostbuster kids suiting up though we don’t see their faces just yet. Zipping up their various uniforms we catch glimpses of all of their name tags. They put on proton packs with Ray’s assistance. The Ecto-1 drives up to a New York City hotel and the group enters an elevator. It is then that we see all of them.

ALFRED

It’s just occurred to me that we’ve never fully tested most of this new equipment.

NICHELLE

You tested it, right Mags?

(Quiet)

Maggie?

MAGGIE

This would actually be the test.

OSCAR

Oh god.

MAGGIE

I wouldn’t worry though. There’s only a twenty percent chance of something going wrong and one of us accidentally blowing ourselves up.

OSCAR

Accidentally?

MAGGIE

Well, you wouldn’t blow yourself up on purpose would you?

EDDIE

Twenty out of?

MAGGIE

A hundred.

EDDIE

Not bad odds.

The elevator doors open and they step out onto the roof. It’s huge. They look around.

OSCAR

Where is it?

NICHELLE

It could be anywhere-

ALFRED

-Or nowhere. This is one big roof.

EDDIE

Nice. Spacious. I think I fell asleep up here once.

ALFRED & NICHELLE

Shut up, Eddie.

OSCAR

Everyone be careful.

EDDIE

I’m always careful.

Eddie trips and almost drops his proton gun. Alfred stops him from doing so.

OSCAR

It has to be here somewhere.

It’s quiet. Too quiet. And then…

HARPIE (O.C.)

(evil laughter)

ALFRED

Oh. It’s here alright.

NICHELLE

I don’t like this.

OSCAR

This isn’t good.

ALFRED

Venkman, watch the left-

OSCAR & EDDIE

Which one?

ALFRED

Mags-

MAGGIE

(anticipating)

Got it-

ALFRED

Alright. Packs on.

They all turn their packs on.

ALFRED

Ready. Steady. Now!

The harpie swoops down into view. Everyone shoots their proton packs missing. She’s too fast. Everyone disperses in different directions. First the harpie attacks Oscar. He shoots at her. The camera freezes: Wilbert as Oscar Barrett Venkman . Starts again. He is about to be knocked down when the harpie is zapped by someone else. She collides with the ground hard. The camera shows Eddie hanging from the water tower on the roof. Blows on his gun. Camera freezes: Nick as Edgar Venkman. Starts again.

EDDIE

You have to admit that was really fucking cool. Damnit!

He falls off the tower even though no one pushed him. The price of being too cool for school. The harpie is back in the air and we check in with the twins. Nichelle runs, dodging things that the enemy hurls at her.

NICHELLE

Keep running. Keep running. Pick up Ellie from gymnastics practice at three, Nate is picking up Collin at daycare at four, I think I set the crockpot on high, homework done by seven, baths at eight… Keep running. Keep running. Oh shoot.

She runs faster and faster and is cornered. The harpie knocks the proton gun out of her hands. Nichelle appears stuck. Behind the harpie Alfred appears as if to intervene then catches his sister’s eye who smirks. The harpie watches in horror as Nichelle pulls out two smaller proton guns. Camera freezes: Naomi as Nichelle Zeddemore. Starts again. She blasts at the harpie spirit who shrieks and takes off again. It is Alfred’s turn now as the harpie picks him up into the air and flies around with him. He fights back. Camera freezes: Emmanuel as Alfred Zeddemore. Starts again. She drops him. At the last moment he grabs the edge of the roof hanging on. He’s slipping. Nichelle rushes over and reaches for him.

NICHELLE

Alfie! Give me your hand!

She can’t quite make it. Their eyes meet. Worry takes over her face. At first Alfred is worried too, then appears calm.

ALFRED

Ni, it’s ok.

NICHELLE

Don’t!

He lets go of the roof and falls. Arms reach out from the window below to catch him. We see who they belong to. Camera freezes: Leah as Maggie Spengler. Starts again. As the harpie swings by the side of the building Alfred is pulled into the hotel ballroom.

ALFRED

Good work.

MAGGIE

I only do good work.

The harpie rushes in through the window and picks up Maggie lifting her up toward the ceiling. Maggie pulls out two small mechanical blocks from her side and presses on. A purple electromagnetic rope appears and she pulls it around the creature’s throat who collides with the ground releasing her. That’s when the rest of the group rushes in. Nichelle glares at her brother.

ALFRED

Yell at me later.

NICHELLE

Oh you know it.

As the harpie flies into the air and screeches everyone aims their proton pack guns and charges.

ALFRED

Ok. This is it. Ready?

OSCAR

Ready.

NICHELLE

Ready.

MAGGIE

Ready.

EDDIE

(shrugs)

Eh.

ALFRED

Now!

They shoot. The creature screams in pain as it’s slowly lowered downward by the group. Oscar tosses the trap. It opens.

OSCAR

Don’t look at the trap.

MAGGIE

I looked at the trap, Osc.

OSCAR

I told you not to!

EDDIE

You saying that makes us want to look!

ALFRED

Almost there! 3…. 2…. 1! Close!

The creature is sucked inside and the flaps of the trap close. It is quiet again except for the soft clinking of chandeliers swaying. The Busters look around. It’s the same hotel ballroom from the first Ghostbusters film and it’s totally destroyed.

EDDIE

Could have been worse.

OSCAR

Yup...

NICHELLE

How exactly?

MAGGIE

It’s better than how we normally leave things.

OSCAR

Huh.

NICHELLE

What is it?

OSCAR

I’m getting some serious deja vu.

EDDIE

Don’t give it to me. I just got over a cold.

They exit the ballroom.

HOTEL MANAGER

Did you get it?

OSCAR

Yeah. We got her.

HOTEL MANAGER

Her?

MAGGIE

Class B Harpie. Real tricky one too.

HOTEL MANAGER

Harpie?

MAGGIE

Harpie otherwise known as harpyiai. Spirits of sudden gusts of wind rumored to have been dispatched by Zeus as a punishment for revealing secrets of the gods.

NICHELLE

That’s a mouthful.

MAGGIE

Not really. I just hit the bullet points.

HOTEL MANAGER

Secrets of the gods?… At our hotel?

OSCAR

Stranger things have happened.

ALFRED

Maybe just secrets of how to lock down a nice, clean hotel room in Manhattan for less than a grand, huh?

MAGGIE

Winged women, with lower bodies of birds…

EDDIE

Everyone’s got their kink.

NICHELLE

I think he gets it, Mags.

MAGGIE

(shrugs)

I find it interesting.

HOTEL MANAGER

I see. But she’s gone now?

OSCAR

She is.

ALFRED

You can settle up with our receptionist. She’ll give you a call.

MAGGIE

That’s seven thousand for containment, five hundred for a day of house call-

EDDIE

-Hotel call.

MAGGIE

Fifteen hundred for pack charging, nine thousand for fifteen year storage-

HOTEL MANAGER

Storage?

NICHELLE

In our containment unit.

MAGGIE

And two thousand dollars for equipment damages.

EDDIE

And a partridge in a pear tree, am I right?

HOTEL MANAGER

That’s insanely expensive.

ALFRED

We could… let her back out?

MAGGIE

On it.

HOTEL MANAGER

No. No. We’ll pay it!

ALFRED

That’s what I thought. Come on gang.

OSCAR

Good choice. Our receptionist would have treated you worse than the harpie.

EDDIE

Gotta love her! Oh wow. That was a fun one. Wasn’t it a fun one, Osc?

As they leave and head toward the Ecto-1.

EDDIE

Hey! I just realized… Nobody blew up!

ALFRED

That’s a victory.

EDDIE

Good work, Spengles.

MAGGIE

Thanks.

(beat)

And don’t call me Spengles.

INT - GHOSTBUSTERS FIREHOUSE - ANOTHER DAY

Eddie sits in front of a computer uploading footage from earlier. Nichelle looks on.

EDDIE

Oh awesome. I got it all on my go pro.

NICHELLE

You wore a go pro?

EDDIE

Not anywhere that you could see.

NICHELLE

Ugh.

On the other side of the room Oscar plays some old Ghostbusters music for Maggie as she tinkers with some machines.

Play this song at 0:13 - Ghostbusters Theme

OSCAR

Oh come on, Mags. It’s catchy.

MAGGIE

There’s a scientific reason for that.

EDDIE

Of course there is.

MAGGIE

The phonological loop continuously stores a small amount of auditory information. Studies by The Boston University Undergraduate Science Magazine have proven-

EDDIE

Go terriers!

MAGGIE

While most information tends to be stored as long term memory songs remain in the short-term memory for a much longer period of time. Though people with a thicker Heschl’s Gryi-

EDDIE

Heh heh. Thick.

MAGGIE

-Are more likely to recall the song than others.

OSCAR

Heschl what?

MAGGIE

An area in the brain involved in auditory perception and musical memory. There are, of course, many factors that may assist such as longer choruses with fewer words, higher pitches, and male vocalists. Singing along to this sort of song may be a subconscious war cry, tapping into a more ancient part of our consciousness. Psychologically we look to men to lead us into battle, so it could be in our nature to more easily maintain male-fronted songs.

NICHELLE

The patriarchy strikes again.

OSCAR

Sorry I asked.

EDDIE

Trust me. We’re all sorry.

MAGGIE

Besides.. It’s vaguely sexual for no reason at all.

 NICHELLE

It is?

MAGGIE

It is.

NICHELLE

Where?

EDDIE

Oh, Ni. You really are too innocent sometimes. Don’t you have a kid?

NICHELLE

I don’t see what that has to do with it.

EDDIE

Bustin’ makes me feel good?

NICHELLE

Oh.

(beat)

OOOOHH!

MAGGIE

Intended for the male gaze.

EDDIE

Mags, are you implying that women can’t bust?

MAGGIE

I have never once busted. Not in the way that you are implying anyways.

EDDIE

You poor, poor girl.

JANINE (O.C.)

5 PM SHIFT CHANGE!

OSCAR

She knows she can just use the intercom right?

NICHELLE

I think she prefers it this way.

OSCAR

Alright. Well, I’m out of here.

NICHELLE

Wow. You’re in a hurry.

OSCAR

Well, you’re not the only parent around these parts anymore, Ni.

NICHELLE

And I love it. How’s the little stinker anyways?

OSCAR

Good. Good. Walking now if you can believe it.

NICHELLE

Oh my gosh. That’s so exciting, Osc!

OSCAR

Actually it’s scarier than any ghosts we’ve ever encountered.

NICHELLE

I feel that. But you’ll be fine.

OSCAR

Keep those fingers crossed.

NICHELLE

Perpetually.

(notices Maggie)

Maggie, didn’t you hear? Shift switch?

MAGGIE

I am second shift.

NICHELLE

But… You’re here.

MAGGIE

I’m always here.

EDDIE

She’s always second shift.

NICHELLE

Right. Well, you keep any eye out on my darling brother you Second Shift Warriors.

Maggie gives a thumbs up buried behind whatever she is working on. Nichelle and Oscar walk outside.

NICHELLE

Have a good night, Janine.

They look up to see Janine is gone.

NICHELLE

Oh.

OSCAR

Always gone at five on the dot.

NICHELLE

If only Alfie was that prompt. Oh. Speaking of-

The Ecto-1 pulls up out front.

OSCAR

There’s that twin sixth sense again. See you tomorrow, Ni.

He kisses her cheek and hurries off just as Alfred gets out of the car.

NICHELLE

You really should lock it you know.

ALFRED

It’s an ambulance/hearse combo model with very specific branding on it, Ni. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.

NICHELLE

But it’s your baby.

Alfred shrugs and heads toward the entrance.

NICHELLE

Working another night shift?

ALFRED

It’s why I’m here.

NICHELLE

You’ve been working a lot of those lately.

ALFRED

Your point, Ni?

NICHELLE

If I didn’t know any better I would say you were avoiding something.

ALFRED

Well, my sister always knows best so I guess that you caught me.

NICHELLE

Do you want to talk about it?

ALFRED

Not really no.

NICHELLE

It wouldn’t happen to be because I always visit dad after work, would it?

ALFRED

I thought I said I didn’t want to talk about it.

NICHELLE

You aren’t. I was just guessing. Whether you respond or not with more info is entirely up to you.

ALFRED

Well, you got me I guess. You always do.

NICHELLE

Do you want to come with me this time?

ALFRED

Nah. I’m good.

NICHELLE

He misses you.

ALFRED

I find that hard to believe.

NICHELLE

Well, he does.

ALFRED

Ok.

NICHELLE

Please?

ALFRED

I’m on the clock, Ni. I can’t just leave work.

NICHELLE

You partially own the joint. I think you can do whatever you like.

ALFRED

I’m sorry. I can’t.

NICHELLE

Can’t or don’t want to?

Quiet. Alfred opens the front door.

ALFRED

See you later, sis.

He goes inside leaving her alone.

NICHELLE

Yeah. See you later.

She sighs and walks away. Inside, Alfred takes off his coat and walks by Maggie.

MAGGIE

You should be nicer to her, you know.

ALFRED

And you know everything.

MAGGIE

He can be taught.

ALFRED

On rare occasions.

Alfred plops down at his desk: his dad’s old desk. Maggie finally looks up from behind whatever she’s working on.

MAGGIE

You’ve been working a lot of nights lately.

ALFRED

Yeah.

MAGGIE

You didn’t used to.

ALFRED

Your point?

MAGGIE

Oscar rushes home to see his husband and his son. Nichelle goes home to her family. Eddie goes to do whatever Eddie does in the hopes, I assume, of creating a family of his own. The only people who work nights are the ones who are avoiding something.

ALFRED

Oh yeah? What are you avoiding?

MAGGIE

Going home.

Quiet.

ALFRED

Why?

MAGGIE

I live by myself. It’s quiet. I didn’t mind before, it allowed me to focus on what I was working on at the time, but since I started working here where things are always happening the difference is palpable. The comparison is honestly startling.

ALFRED

I get that. I live alone too.

MAGGIE

Yes, but you have Nichelle, Ellie, Collin, and your dad. Family. I’m envious of that.

ALFRED

You have us. You have Ray.

MAGGIE

It is nice but somehow not the same.

ALFRED

Still miss your dad…

MAGGIE

I do. Very much. Somehow I expect that I always will. But it hurts a little less every day. And something new replaces it.

ALFRED

Oh yeah. What is that?

MAGGIE

I’m not sure yet but when I have a classification for it you’ll be the first to know.

ALFRED

Sounds like a plan.

MAGGIE

Plans. I like plans. Terribly thrilled to be a part of one.

ALFRED

You know what? I think that I am too.

MAGGIE

Alfred, I couldn’t help but notice your sudden penchant for the night shift coincides with the time that you found out that-

ALFRED

Maggie. Stop.

She does. It’s the one time she stops with her facts.

MAGGIE

Ok.

Beat.

ALFRED

So… What are you working on? Tonight I mean.

MAGGIE

Oh. I’m trying to determine what content to put into an employee handbook.

ALFRED

For Ghostbusters?

MAGGIE

Yes. It was a project that my father pitched when he was a Ghostbuster. I read it in one of his journals. I intend on completing it for him. The only trouble is-

ALFRED

A Spengler never has trouble with anything.

MAGGIE

This is a false narrative though an appreciated one. I agree that normally an employee handbook shouldn’t present any difficulty in any profession however ours is a little more...

ALFRED

Niche.

MAGGIE

Yes,

ALFRED

It’s not exactly a normal job.

MAGGIE

Normal to us.

ALFRED

Sometimes.

MAGGIE

In science we always look for the simplest explanation-

ALFRED

But there’s no simple explanation for anything that we do.

MAGGIE

Correct.

ALFRED

Well, I could help you out. I mean, it’s not like I have anything else going on right now.

MAGGIE

That would be great.

ALFRED

Cool. I’m in.

He begins to help. Then...

MAGGIE

Alfred?

ALFRED

Huh?

MAGGIE

Be kinder to your sister. She cares about you. And maybe just don’t work all of the night shifts all of the time. Go see your dad. You’ll regret it one day if you don’t.

ALFRED

I got it.

MAGGIE

Good.

They work. Then...

ALFRED

Mags. You said you stay here because its’s quiet at home at night but it’s quiet here too.

MAGGIE

No. You’re here.

They both smile at each other.

INT - ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY - NIGHT

Nichelle walks down the hall right as Ray exits one of the rooms.

NICHELLE

Hey there Uncle Ray. Every night at 5:45 PM. Just like clockwork.

RAY

I’ll have you know that Battleship doesn’t play itself, Ni.

He gives her a hug.

NICHELLE

No cheating this time I hope.

RAY

I never cheat.

NICHELLE

Sure, sure. How is he?

RAY

Some days are better than others. Some on. Some off.

NICHELLE

Which one is today?

RAY

It was an on… Now it’s an off. I wanted to stay and see him through it but I got kicked out. I have a knack for that I think.

NICHELLE

It’s ok, Uncle Ray. He loves you. We all do.

RAY

Just doesn’t like me very much today. We’ll try again tomorrow. You want me to go in with you?

NICHELLE

No. That’s ok. I’ve got it.

RAY

Ok. See you kiddo.

He kisses her forehead and walks away. Nichelle enters the room. We see someone standing by the closet looking at the clothes that hang there.

NICHELLE

Hey dad…

The person turns. It’s Winston Zeddemore.

WINSTON

Hey, baby girl.

NICHELLE

How are we feeling today?

WINSTON

I’m alright. Was just trying to pick out something to wear for our supper tonight but I got a little stuck.

NICHELLE

Do you want some help?

WINSTON

No. No. I can handle it. Last thing I need is for my youngest to dress me. I’m not there yet.

NICHELLE

Alfred and I are the same age dad.

WINSTON

Two minutes apart. I remember that. I haven’t lost my marbles yet.

NICHELLE

You’re not losing your marbles dad.

WINSTON

Well, everyone is acting like I am. That’s why I’m here isn’t it?

NICHELLE

No. You’re here for the extra help.

WINSTON

I don’t need any extra help. And even on the rare chance that I did your mom can help me. There’s no sense in wasting these people’s time and our money on this sort of thing. A whole bunch of fuss for nothing.

NICHELLE

It’s okay, dad. Look…

She pulls out a blazer from the closet and shows him.

NICHELLE

This one will go great with what you’re already wearing. What do you think?

(He needs more convincing)

I bought this for you last Christmas and I really would love to see you in it.

WINSTON

(relents)

Ok. Ok. You know the way to your old pops’ heart. Give it here.

Nichelle helps him put it on.

NICHELLE

There we go. You look great, dad. Like a million bucks.

WINSTON

A million and one. Come on, lets get out of here. Don’t want to keep my grandbabies waiting.

NICHELLE

And Nate.

WINSTON

Nah. Nate can wait, babygirl.

Nichelle’s eyes drift over to a small pamphlet that is framed on the cover of an album. Tiyah Zeddemore. December 17th 1950-December 29th 2020 . She frowns, then puts on a brave face and soldiers on.

EXT STREET - VENKMAN RESIDENCE - NIGHT

We see Oscar arrive home. His husband greets him with their child. They kiss.

TYLER

You’re late, Venkman.

OSCAR

But I always make it don’t I?

TYLER

So far.

We see Nichelle having dinner with her family and Winston. Alfred is working on the Ecto-1 in the garage by himself. Eddie partying it up on the dance floor at some club. Maggie and Ray work together in Egon’s old workshop.

RAY

Mags?

MAGGIE

Yeah, Uncle Ray?

RAY

I really enjoy our time together. Doing this. Tinkering, you know?

MAGGIE

Well, I should hope so. We’ve been doing it for five years. Should I not have assumed?

RAY

No. No. I just wanted you to know that it means a lot to me. You including me in your work. I know how your da-... How precious your work can be and an extra set of hands is oftentimes more hurtful than helpful a lot of the time. And my hands tend to be extra hurtful a lot of the time… It’s just nice of you to humor an old man is all. It takes me back to a simpler time. Well, a complicated time but simple to love one.

MAGGIE

Are you okay, Uncle Ray?

RAY

I know that things have been tough lately, tough always, and you know that you can talk to me, yeah? I’m here for you.

MAGGIE

I know.

RAY

Ok. Good.

They both nod and go back to work. We see Oscar asleep in his bed with his husband, cuddling their young child. Eddie asleep in some random girl’s bed. Another eventful night conquered. Early in the morning we watch Maggie walk home but on the way she stops and hides behind a tree, watching the commotion emerge from the house across the street. A pretty blonde woman leaves with two little girls in tow (probably around five or six years old). They are all smiling and giggling. Arthur Peck emerges. Kisses the blonde woman, picks up one of the children and they helps to load the crew into a vehicle. Maggie frowns as she watches them for a bit. An opportunity missed. Arthur waves goodbye then looks to the street. Maggie hides. When she peeks out again he’s gone. She turns to leave but comes face to face with...

ARTHUR

Maggie? What are you doing here?

MAGGIE

I was… I uh…

INT - NYC APARTMENT - MORNING

A realtor walks inside an apartment showing it off.

REALTOR

Over here is the common area. Very spacious. Lots of natural light. Plenty of room for furniture sets and you could even make a dining room if you put up a partition or a temporary wall. Technically against the lease but if you don’t tell I won’t.

(laughs)

THE ONE

(tries to copy the human laughter, it’s forced)

REALTOR

Then over here we have the kitchen. The bedroom is right there if you want to take a look. Could fit a full in there and a dresser.

The One doesn’t budge.

REALTOR

You don’t want to take a look?

The One enters the room and looks around.

THE ONE

There’s no windows.

REALTOR

Ok. Ok. You’ve got me. It’s not a legal bedroom either. Hence the price. I’m not the landlord just the messenger. But the price can’t be beat!

THE ONE

I think I’ll take it.

REALTOR

Excellent.

THE ONE

There’s just one problem.

REALTOR

Oh?

THE ONE

If you could come take a look?

The realtor does. The door swings shut. Noise, a struggle, followed by a blood curdling scream.

REALTOR

(screams)

The sound of a thud. Then silence followed by footsteps. The door reopens to reveal The One. She appears more lively. Like there is blood running through her veins. She turns and reaches out toward the door. The door shakes, as if it’s going to shut, then doesn’t.

THE ONE

Almost there but not quite.

She looks out the window in the living room.

THE ONE

Then I’ll be ready for you Winston Zeddemore. And you better be ready for me too.

She exits. Elsewhere we see Worker 2 floating face down in the Hudson.

INT - NICHELLE’S HOME - DAY

Nichelle’s family sits at the kitchen table as she feeds all of them… Including her husband Nate.

ELLIE

And them Miss Lombarti said that I had the best diorama in the whole, entire class. Even better than Jonathan’s and Jonathan always has the best dioramas because his dad is an architect.

NATE

Wow. That’s great hun.

ELLIE

Yeah! Isn’t that great mommy? Mommy?

NICHELLE

What? Oh yes. That’s great honey.

ELLIE

Mommy… Were you even listening?

NICHELLE

I was, sweetheart. I’m sorry.

NATE

Mommy has just had a lot on her plate Ellie so she’s really tired. That’s all.

ELLIE

Maybe you should take a nap then.

COLLIN

Nap! Nap!

NATE

Ellie, why don’t you take your little brother and go watch tv in the tv room?

ELLIE

Ok, daddy.

Nate takes Collin out of his highchair and hands him to Ellie who lugs him out of the room, grunting the whole way. Soon the sounds of the tv can be heard.

NICHELLE

Thanks. I’m just-

NATE

Worlds away? I know. It’s fine. I know that things are tough with your dad right now. I understand, babe. It’s ok.

NICHELLE

It’s not just my dad. It’s everything. Alfred won’t even go see him and no matter what I do I can’t change his mind.

NATE

He’ll go when he’s ready.

NICHELLE

What if by the time he’s ready it’s too late?

ELLIE

Stop it, Collin. Stop it! I’m watching my show.

NATE

That’s not your fault, hun. It’s not your job to take care of everyone...

NICHELLE

I’ve heard that before. Never stops me from trying.

NATE

Guess I can’t say that I’m surprised. It’s one of the reasons that I love you.

ELLIE

Collin!

REPORTER

-the body was found at 630 Lenox Avenue. Officers didn’t provide much info but stated that the body looked to be drained of its contents-

ELLIE

Mommy, Collin keeps playing with the control while I’m trying to watch my show!

Nichelle, drawn by the news, enters the room and watches.

ELLIE

Mommy!

NICHELLE

Sh… One minute baby.

OFFICER

-with no entry wound we would be hard pressed at this time to tell you what caused these sort of circumstances. Anyone with any leads can call our tip line at-

NICHELLE

Oh my god.

ELLIE

What would do something like that?

NATE

I think that’s your mom’s department, hun.

REPORTER

This is the second body in as many weeks. Authorities are concerned that the attacks will continue-

ELLIE

Mommy has to go to work with the Ghostbusters now?

NICHELLE

Yes. Mommy has to go to work.

COLLIN

Not afraid!

INT - GHOSTBUSTERS HEADQUARTERS - DAY

Nichelle comes rushing in. So does everyone else one by one. The firehouse is a flurry of activity.

NICHELLE

Did you see?

ALFRED

Yeah. I saw.

MAGGIE

Me too.

RAY

Me three.

EDDIE

Me the next number.

NICHELLE

I think he saw too.

Points to Oscar who runs in and rushes to his desk.

OSCAR

Yeah I saw. Why else would I be missing my kid’s first day at daycare?

EDDIE

A lot of reasons I imagine. I could list them.

ALFRED

Let's not and say that you did.

EDDIE

Ok. I did.

(realizes)

Whoah. It’s a party. Everyone’s here. What’s going on?

OSCAR

Janine?

JANINE

On it!

Janine rushes in and drops a stack of files down on a big table. It’s a mess.

JANINE

This is all that I could find.

NICHELLE

Heck of an organizational method.

JANINE

Don’t blame me, kids. I’m just the help.

MAGGIE

No. It’s organized. Just not in a way you would understand.

JANINE

Hey!

MAGGIE

No. That wasn’t an attack on you. I didn’t mean just you. It’s just… My dad organized this. He had very specific methods that don’t necessarily make sense to the common mind.

OSCAR

Only a Spengler.

ALFRED

Lucky we’ve got one.

EDDIE

So, like… What happens when you’re not here? We just don’t find the files that we need when we need them?

MAGGIE

You better hope that I never quit then.

ALFRED

Fingers crossed.

OSCAR

So what is it?

Just then Ray enters.

RAY

A wraith. Did you see?

ALL

We saw.

EDDIE

I’m still lost to be honest.

RAY

A spirit that is said to be the embodiment of souls who have passed or who are on the verge of death. In ancient times they were thought to be purely representative of passing into the next life but now we know better. In thanks to your dad…

(looks around)

In thanks to all of your dads… And me.

NICHELLE

What do you mean Uncle Ray?

OSCAR

What do we know now?

RAY

We now know that wraiths have unfinished business in this realm. Their soul job is to uh… Collect souls.. Ironically enough. In doing so they become stronger and stronger until…

ALFRED

Until what?

RAY

I’m not sure. We never got to the ‘until’ back in my day. We just always busted them.

ALFRED

Great.

OSCAR

What motivates this one?

RAY

A wraith doesn’t need motivation.

NICHELLE

We all need motivation to do something.

EDDIE

I need motivation just to come to work.

RAY

I’m telling you kids a wraith doesn’t need any motivation. But if it did, and I’m saying this is a very slim chance of being the case, it would be what every bad spirit’s is.

NICHELLE

Which is?

RAY

Revenge.

ALFRED

And we’re very familiar with that by now.

OSCAR

Well, that’s not good.

MAGGIE

It’s never good.

NICHELLE

What do we do, Ray?

RAY

Right now? Nothing we can do. Wraiths are pretty good staying hidden until they want to be found.

ALFRED

Who’s to say this one wants to be found at all?

RAY

Oh it will. If the news is correct-

EDDIE

And it always is!

RAY

Only two bodies have been found. This wraith is weak still. It’ll need to consume more souls before it can even think about going after it’s true purpose… Whatever that is.

ALFRED

Great. Just great. So what do we do? Just sit on our hands and wait for more souls to get sucked?

JANINE

We’ve got another one!

EDDIE

(grins at Alfred)

Nope.

Janine approaches Maggie before she heads out the door.

JANINE

Hey. Ray of Sunshine?

(Maggie looks at her)

I’m usually pretty psychic and I have an awful feeling that something is going to happen to you.

Janine hugs Maggie. As usual it’s awkward as all hell.

MAGGIE

Ok.

JANINE

I’m afraid that you’re gonna die.

MAGGIE

Alright.

Maggie leaves then comes back.

MAGGIE

Has a time been determined? Like today? Or is this pretty open ended.

JANINE

I can’t be sure.

MAGGIE

Great.

EDDIE (O.C)

Spengles!

MAGGIE

Gotta go.

INT - BROADWAY THEATER DISTRICT - DAY

The Ghostbusters ride all packed into the Ecto-1 to their next location in Times Square. Tourists watch stunned as they enter one of the theaters. It’s dark. They use the PKE meter to track the subject. On the stage we see a creepy ballerina ghost dancing. The gang watches from the back. It’s eerie.

MAGGIE

It’s here.

EDDIE

Say, she’s pretty good.

ALFRED

She’s pretty dead.

Ray peaks out from behind them in awe.

RAY

A full body apparition. Oh my gosh. It’s barely transparent.

ALFRED

(hushed)

Ray! We told you to stay back at headquarters.

OSCAR

We tell you that all of the time.

RAY

Sorry. It’s just been a while since I’ve seen one of these.

ALFRED

Ray, can I have a minute of your time?

RAY

Oh I-

ALFRED

Just a minute.

RAY

Well, ok. Ow-

Alfred grabs Ray by the ear and pulls him aside.

RAY

So what are you going to do? You have to make contact obviously. That’s ghost busting 101.

ALFRED

We know this Ray. We’ve been at this for five years. Now if you don’t mind. Let us do our job. You stay right here and don’t move.

RAY

But-

ALFRED

Don’t. Move.

RAY

Got it.

Alfred rejoins the other Buster spawn as they huddle away from Ray.

ALFRED

Get her?

THE REST OF THE BUSTER KIDS

Get her.

Play this song - Get Ghost

The group charges at the ghost who immediately spins to a stop with large fangs and stands off. The gang yells and scatters as she gives chase.

EDDIE

What the fuck was that?!

OSCAR

Seriously Eddie? That weirds you out? That isn’t even the weirdest thing we’ve seen this week.

EDDIE

I have a teeth thing!

Oscar shoots his proton pack at the ghost who screeches in disapproval. She then begins to spin like a top creating a tornado like effect that knocks them every which way. It blows Maggie right off the stage and she knocks her head against the armrest of a chair in the audience which scrapes her forehead. Eddie ducks behind some set pieces.

EDDIE

I just want to say I watched the first two seasons of Dance Moms in one day once… And this is NOTHING LIKE IT.

Eddie shoots his proton pack at the ghost who screeches again and moves away from him. The ghost now spins toward Nichelle who catches a contraption that Maggie throws her way.

MAGGIE

Ni! Heads up!

NICHELLE

What do I do with this?

MAGGIE

Press the button!

Nichelle looks. It’s all buttons.

NICHELLE

Which?

MAGGIE

Any of them!

Nichelle does. An electromagnetic net spits out tangling the ghost who stops spinning.

NICHELLE

Whoah! You made this?

MAGGIE

I think?

NICHELLE

You think?

MAGGIE

I blacked out. Anything after 3 AM for me in the workshop is a blur.

Alfred shoots at the ghost who grabs him in her frustration and throws him up to the rafters where he dangles.

ALFRED

I’m getting really tired of this.

Oscar and Eddie stand on either side of the ghost proton packs at the ready. Nichelle and Maggie also pull out their guns and all at once they shoot at the ghost. Alfred is climbing down but notices the trap isn’t at his hip. There it is meer feet from Ray.

ALFRED

Ray, a little help.

RAY

I uh…

ALFRED

The trap Ray! The trap!

RAY

You said not to move?

ALFRED

Fuck man! I take it back! Move. Move to your heart’s content. Don’t stop moving. Just throw the damn trap!

Ray does so. The trap is thrown and the ghost is sucked inside. The doors close unceremoniously. Everyone is breathless except for Eddie who is singing the song we just heard and dancing by himself.

EDDIE

(sings)

I got the ghost

That spirit you harbor in your bones

The likeness that you fear the most, but don't forget

Get ghost

NICHELLE

Something is wrong with this boy.

ALFRED

Yeah. He’s a Venkman.

NICHELLE

Bless his heart.

EDDIE

(now singing a half made up song)

Who you gonna call?

Us.

Better yet don’t call. Nobody calls anymore. Just text. Who you gonna text?

These guys - uh people.

Who you gonna text? These people!

Badadadadada!

(spoken)

Come on Nichelle! Who you gonna call? Dance with me girl. Who you gonna call?

NICHELLE

(trying not to laugh)

Us.

EDDIE

These people! That’s right.

OSCAR

Well, we got her.

RAY

Nice work team. It was a real treat witnessing it up close.

EDDIE

You were great, Uncle Ray!

RAY

I was, wasn’t I?

It’s during this time that Nichelle notices her brother climbing down the stage and going to check on Maggie. Interesting.

ALFRED

You ok?

MAGGIE

Everything is currently in tact. All functions are go.

(realizes not everyone speaks Spengler)

I’m fine.

ALFRED

Gotta protect that brain of yours.

He gently touches her head, wiping it with his sleeve before quickly retracting his hand when he catches his sister staring. Walks away.

RAY

Great work Mags!

MAGGIE

Thanks Uncle Ray! Not too bad yourself.

RAY

I know, right?!

EXT - THE ROOF AT GHOSTBUSTERS HEADQUARTERS - NIGHT

Alfred stands up there smoking a cigarette and watching the city. His sister approaches him.

NICHELLE

Caught red handed. Just like dad, huh. You know that sort of thing is bad for you.

ALFRED

So is what we do for a living. I prefer the vice that I choose.

NICHELLE

Choose? What do you mean choose?

ALFRED

(shrugs)

NICHELLE

You chose this, Alfie. We all did.

ALFRED

Did we? Or did we feel obligated?

NICHELLE

You don’t mean that.

ALFRED

I do.

NICHELLE

I hear you saying the words but I know that they’re not true.

ALFRED

And you know me best.

NICHELLE

I thought I did.

ALFRED

Excuse me?

NICHELLE

I know the big brother who always reminds me that he’s two whole minutes older. I know the Alfie that swings by my place every morning whether I’m making cinnabons or not. I know my brother who was closer to our father than anybody else in the whole world and would never turn down the opportunity to see him because he was scared. I know that person. I don’t know the person standing on this roof right now.

ALFRED

Ni-

NICHELLE

I want to help, Alfie. More than anything in the whole world. And I know that I always want to help everyone always. I know that. But right now I want nothing more than to help you and have my brother back.

ALFRED

I’m right here.

NICHELLE

You are but not really. My brother didn’t have so many secrets. We told each other everything.

ALFRED

Sometimes we didn’t even need to. It was like we could-

NICHELLE

-Read each other’s minds. We could. But not so much anymore. Please. Talk to me.

ALFRED

He remembers you Ni! He never forgot you or your name so that’s really fucking easy for you to say, isn’t it?

Quiet. Nichelle sighs and walks away. Stops at the door leading back inside.

NICHELLE

Does she know?

ALFRED

Huh?

NICHELLE

I may not be able to read your mind as much anymore but I can read body language. You’re just lucky that she can’t.

Nichelle leaves. Alfie looks back out at the skyline and takes another long drag. Downstairs Eddie has set up his and Oscar’s usual beer pong table. Once it’s complete he rushes over to his brother’s desk.

EDDIE

Hey Osc! It’s all ready! You can even go first. Osc?

Oscar is gone.

EDDIE

Osc? Oscar? Bro?

Eddie looks around but Oscar is nowhere to be found. Back at Oscar’s desk he sees the photo of Oscar’s family. Just Oscar’s family. His son, his husband… No Eddie to be found. Eddie looks to his own desk which is covered with photos of Oscar and himself. His dad. Frowns. Much later we see Ray shutting everything in the empty headquarters down. A light, then another, then he reaches the workshop. Smiles. Goes to say hello to Maggie and sees her and Alfred are there talking and laughing while working. Ray smiles sadly, then frowns, decides against saying hello and walks away alone.

Once outside he is blindsided by something rushing into him slamming him into the brick wall multiple times. He crumples to the pavement bleeding. The One steps into his blurry view.

THE ONE

Hello, Raymond Stantz… Remember me?

RAY

I… I….

THE ONE

Sh… Conserve your energy.

RAY

The… the… kids….

THE ONE

Oh yes. I know all about them. I wouldn’t worry. About them. I’m not after them. I’m after your partner. Winston Zeddemore. You can understand why of course… My sisters must be avenged.

RAY

It’s.. It’s.. always revenge.

THE ONE

It is, isn’t it? What an astute observation.

RAY

Am.. Am.. I dead?

THE ONE

No, dear man. I need you alive to send a message. To draw out your partner. That is unless you want to make this easy for the both of us and tell me where he is.

Ray says nothing.

THE ONE

Well, there you have it. Hard way it is.

An invisible force lifts him and slams him into the brick wall several more times. He passes out on the ground.

THE ONE

Mm… I’m getting better at this.

INT - GHOSTBUSTERS HEADQUARTERS - EARLY MORNING

A knock at Ghostbusters headquarters door. Maggie answers and is surprised to see...

EDDIE

Pecker.

ARTHUR

Arthur is fine, Eddie.

EDDIE

Is it though? How you doing my guy?

ARTHUR

Eddie, can you give Maggie and I a minute? Please?

EDDIE

Well, ok… But I’ll be counting.

Eddie steps away from the door leaving Maggie alone.

MAGGIE

Arthur.

ARTHUR

Margaret.

MAGGIE

It’s been a while.

ARTHUR

It has.

MAGGIE

If you came here for your job back I think that you’ll have to fight Janine for it.

ARTHUR

No. That’s not why I’m here.

MAGGIE

Oh.

ARTHUR

You were outside my home, Mags.

MAGGIE

Astute observation.

ARTHUR

Where my wife and our kids live.

MAGGIE

This is correct.

ARTHUR

You can’t do that again. You know that, right?

(a beat)

It’s too hard.

MAGGIE

I do. I won’t.

ARTHUR

Ok. Good. That’s all I came here to say.

He turns to leave.

MAGGIE

Arthur-

ARTHUR

Hm?

MAGGIE

You.. adopted them? Her kids I mean.

ARTHUR

I did. Last year.

MAGGIE

Good. That’s good. They need a dad.

(a moment)

You uh… They…. You all look happy.

ARTHUR

We are.

MAGGIE

I am happy for you.

ARTHUR

You are?

MAGGIE

That’s what you wanted isn’t it? A family?

ARTHUR

Yes.

MAGGIE

Then yes. I am happy for you. You deserve to be happy.

ARTHUR

Thanks.

(beat)

Ok. I uh… Ok.

He walks away. Maggie closes the door. It is soon reopened as Eddie comes racing out and chases after Arthur who keeps trying to walk away.

EDDIE

One whole minute on the dot. Hey! Pecker! Peck! Wait up! Man come on.

ARTHUR

What?

EDDIE

You up and quit with no notice a year ago and drop by for a lousy second and that’s it?

ARTHUR

I quit three years ago.

EDDIE

Whatever. Point is, you can stick around for longer than sixty seconds. Say hello and stuff.

ARTHUR

No. I really can’t.

EDDIE

Well, why not?

ARTHUR

I just can’t. Ok.

EDDIE

That’s not an answer dude.

ARTHUR

It is. You just don’t like it.

EDDIE

Come on my guy.

ARTHUR

I’m not your guy.

EDDIE

It’s just a thing you say.

ARTHUR

Well, so is this. I am going home. Leave me alone.

EDDIE

You love this place.

ARTHUR

I loved a lot of things that didn't work out.

EDDIE

You miss this. I know that you do.

Finally Arthur stops and turns to face Eddie. It’s game on.

ARTHUR

Yeah. And so what?

EDDIE

Whoah. Dude. Relax.

ARTHUR

Eddie, sometimes things don’t work out the way that you want them to. It’s a part of life. Everything isn’t sunshine and jello shots every god damned day.

EDDIE

It could be.

ARTHUR

No. It can’t. Because that’s not how life works ‘my guy’. Sometimes things don’t work out the way that you want them to. Sometimes you just have to move the fuck on and stop wasting your energy and time on things that aren’t going to pan out in the end.

EDDIE

But how do you know?

ARTHUR

Oh trust me. You know.

EDDIE

Is this about, Spengles? Oh come on dude. We knew that wasn’t going to work out. She’s like talking to an Alexa or Google Dot half the time. Most of the time. I’m sure if you came back to work she would be professional. It’s been a year-

ARTHUR

Three years.

EDDIE

Three years! She’s over it by now.

ARTHUR

Maybe I’m not.

EDDIE

Huh? What the fuck are you talking about? You got what you wanted. You have the kids, the family.

ARTHUR

Eddie. I wanted that with her.

EDDIE

Oh.

ARTHUR

Yeah.

Quiet.

ARTHUR

I love my wife.

EDDIE

I didn’t say you didn’t.

ARTHUR

It’s complicated.

EDDIE

Us Busters are a complicated people.

ARTHUR

Us?

EDDIE

Like it or not you’re one of us Peck. And even if you don’t know it right now I do. You’ll be back.

ARTHUR

See you around Eddie.

EDDIE

You will! You’ll see!

Arthur leaves Eddie by himself. His phone vibrates. He looks down at it. His face falls.

INT - HOSPITAL - EARLY EVENING

We see Ray in a hospital bed. Asleep. Maggie sits beside him. On the other side of the window Alfred watches. Thinks about going in, thinks better of it, and leaves. Back at Ghostbusters headquarters Eddie works all by himself. Janine comes and checks on him. They both open a beer and drink. We see Oscar with Tyler and his kid at dinner. Oscar seems distracted. He keeps checking his phone until Tyler gently takes it away and puts it in his coat pocket.

Ray’s in trouble dad.

(nothing)

He hasn’t woken up since the attack and we’re all worried.

(nothing)

We’re worried about you too.

(nothing)

Usually you or Uncle Ray are the ones getting us out of trouble not the other way around.

(nothing)

I don’t know what to do dad. Please tell me what to do to fix all of this.

WINSTON

Will Alfred be coming by soon?

Nichelle smiles weakly. She doesn’t know what to say.

INT - HOSPITAL - EVENING

Maggie at Ray’s bed side.

MAGGIE

Ray? Can you hear me?

(nothing)

They say that unconscious patients can still hear the voices around them and retain information so they told me to talk to you. Now, I don’t know how true any of those theories are and there certainly isn’t any sustainable data to back it up but there isn’t anything against it either so… Why not? You have to wake up Uncle Ray.

(nothing)

Your hands are not hurtful. They haven’t ever been hurtful. They uh… Always grab the tools that I need, they move a lot when you talk about something you’re really excited about, they give good hugs even though I have absolutely no idea how best to return them… They’re good hands!

(nothing)

Please wake up. You can’t leave us like this. We need you. Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me by myself. All alone.

A hand rests on Maggie’s shoulder. Camera reveals Alfred who has come back. She gets up and hugs him.

INT - OSCAR AND TYLERS’ APARTMENT - DAY

Oscar and Tyler look up speaking to someone.

TYLER

You sure that this is a good idea?

OSCAR

Sure as I’ll ever be. We did daycare and that went alright, didn’t it? Now we have to leave him with a sitter at night. One night. Parents do this all of the time.

TYLER

Not like we’re doing.

OSCAR

Nobody does things how we do them.

TYLER

I’m not sure how I feel about this, hun.

OSCAR

There’s nothing to worry about. You have references, don’t you?

The camera pans back to reveal who they’re speaking to. It’s Slimer!

SLIMER

(series of noises)

OSCAR

Oh. Emperor Huizong of Song. That’s a good one. He had sixty five kids you know.

SLIMER

(series of noises)

OSCAR

Oh. I bet they were a handful.

TYLER

Babe… He’s not a babysitter. He’s a ghost. No offense.

SLIMER

(series of noises)

OSCAR

Oh come on. He’s a ghost babysitter. Slimer used to watch me and Eddie when we were kids and we turned out- Oh. I see what you’re saying.

TYLER

My point exactly.

OSCAR

Fifty fifty chance then.

SLIMER

(series of noises)

OSCAR

Besides for tonight we’ll be just downstairs at the Wine Not.

TYLER

Ugh. That place. They think they’re so witty. Wine Not. Wine Not have a name without a pun you assholes?

SLIMER

(series of noises)

TYLER

Sorry. Jerks. I meant jerks.

OSCAR

See? He is good!

INT - GHOSTBUSTERS HEADQUARTERS - NIGHT

Maggie is working. She looks up. Alfred is standing there.

ALFRED

Hey.

MAGGIE

Hey.

ALFRED

How are you holding up?

MAGGIE

About as well as can be expected considering.

ALFRED

Considering what?

MAGGIE

Everything?

ALFRED

Yeah. I get that.

MAGGIE

I know that you do.

Quiet.

ALFRED

Are you still in love with Arthur?

MAGGIE

What? No.

ALFRED

Eddie mentioned that he stopped by the other day and you looked upset.. So I thought that you might be. Maybe. None of my business I guess.

MAGGIE

Nope.

ALFRED

Fair enough.

MAGGIE

I don’t think I was ever in love with him.

ALFRED

No?

MAGGIE

No. And to be entirely truthful I don’t think he was ever really in love with me. I think we were objectively in love with the idea of each other. The house, the normal family whatever that means these days,  the lab in the basement...

ALFRED

Yeah. Nothing weird about that. Wait… Family?

MAGGIE

Uh huh.

ALFRED

You didn’t want a family. That was the whole reason for the break up, wasn’t it?

MAGGIE

After further consideration: I did. Just not with him.

ALFRED

With who then?

MAGGIE

I don’t have the answer for that yet. When I know-

ALFRED

You’ll tell me. I know. I know.

Quiet.

ALFRED

What if it’s with me?

MAGGIE

What?

ALFRED

I said… What if it’s with me?

MAGGIE

I don’t know what you mean by that.

ALFRED

Maggie, you’re the smartest person in this city if not the whole country. You know what I’m saying.

MAGGIE

No. Numbers I get. Data and science laid out on the table I get. Vague statements have never been in my orbit.

ALFRED

What if you and I are… What if we are supposed to…

(tries again)

You and me.

MAGGIE

Yes. This I understand.

ALFRED

What if we’re the idea and the real thing?

MAGGIE

Oh.

(realizes)

Oooooohhhhh. That’s absurd.

ALFRED

Is it? We spend every night together-

MAGGIE

At work.

ALFRED

Yes at work. But we talk the whole time and we never run out of things to talk about. I dare say it - we like talking to each other. I like talking to you. Do you like talking to me?

MAGGIE

Yes.

ALFRED

There! See? And if we like talking to each other that means we like spending time with each other. I look forward to coming in for the night shift. Don’t you?

She nods.

ALFRED

See?! So if we like talking to each other AND we like spending time with one another wouldn’t the next logical thing in that equation be to...

MAGGIE

No. You’re my friend. I’ve known you forever.

ALFRED

Since the day you were born. And what is wrong with that? Mags, can you look at me right now, dead in the eye, and tell me you don’t feel any type of way toward me?

She doesn’t look at him.

ALFRED

Maggie-

MAGGIE

I don’t.

She still isn’t looking at him. Quiet. Alfred goes to leave then turns around.

ALFRED

I called you . I was the one who first called you, who always called you when you dropped off the face of the planet. I never forced you to do anything until you were ready. I’m still not going to do that even though I know that you are lying to me right now.

MAGGIE

How do you know that?

ALFRED

Because I know you, Mags.

(pause)

I’ve known you my whole life.

He leaves.

INT - NICHELLE’S KITCHEN - NIGHT

Nichelle sits by herself at the kitchen table having a mug of tea. Her daughter Ellie emerges wearing pajamas and rubbing her eyes.

NICHELLE

Ellie, baby, it’s late.

ELLIE

You’re up. I wanted to come check on you.

NICHELLE

Check on me? That’s so sweet. Come here.

Nichelle pulls the little girl into her lap and gives her a hug.

ELLIE

Are you okay mommy?

NICHELLE

(thinks)

No. But you know what? That’s ok. It’s ok to not be ok sometimes as long as you talk about it. Promise to tell mommy whenever you’re not feeling ok?

ELLIE

I promise.

(beat)

Mommy?

NICHELLE

Hm?

ELLIE

Why is it ok to not be ok sometimes?

NICHELLE

Because that’s just how the world is sometimes. And usually, with a little hard work, whatever you’re worried about will work itself out in the end. And if it doesn’t, we Zeddemores make it so. Right?

ELLIE

Right. I love you mommy.

NICHELLE

I love you too baby girl.

They hug again.

INT - GHOSTBUSTERS HEADQUARTERS - GARAGE

Alfred is working on the Ecto-1. He sees a pair of feet and rolls out from under it.

ALFRED

Hey.

MAGGIE

Hey.

(beat)

You were right.

ALFRED

There’s a first time for everything.

MAGGIE

You have always been the first person to call me. To check on me. You’ve always looked out for me no matter what. I don’t know how I missed it. I guess I miss everything that isn’t written down on paper. I don’t think that I ever thanked you for that.

ALFRED

No need to thank me. I wanted to do it.

MAGGIE

Even so… Thank you.

ALFRED

Is that it?

MAGGIE

I…

(stops self)

Yes. I think so.

ALFRED

Ok then.

MAGGIE

Ok. Bye.

ALFRED

Bye.

They both walk in separate directions out of frame. A few seconds pass. They suddenly come running back and collide in a smokeshow of a makeout session. They land on top of the hood of the Ecto then fall right off. SPENGLEMORE HAS LIFT OFF. Inside the office Eddie sits alone drawing himself in as a stick figure into one of Oscar’s family photos. Sets it down on the desk.

EDDIE

(lies to himself)

Perfect.

It’s not.

INT - OSCAR AND TYLERS’ APARTMENT - BATHROOM

Slimer is giving their baby a bath. He whizzes around the room undressing the baby, running the water, happily chatting to himself. He plops a bunch of toys into the water (some of which he steals by going through walls and stealing from other apartments). The little boy seems to love the He Man action figure. Everything is going well that is until he turns around and sees The One standing there.

SLIMER

(series of noises)

Without saying a word she waves her hand and Slimer goes flying into the living room knocking things all over the place. A photo falls to the ground. The One picks it up and sees a framed magazine clipping of the four original Ghostbusters. Smiles. Then turns her attention onto the babbling baby.

SLIMER

(series of noises)

Slimer, in panic, rushes through the wall and downstairs through the wine bar.

LADY

Oh my god!

GENTLEMAN

A gh-gh-ghost!

All hell breaks loose as everyone runs away. Oscar and Tyler remain.

OSCAR

What? What’s going on?

We see the Ghostbusters noticing the news coverage on their various electronic devices. They rush off with their supplies.

REPORTER 2

-Spectral spirits are popping up again in our beloved city this time in downtown Manhattan. Numerous eyewitnesses state seeing a real live ghost at the popular dinner destination. Though these reports are yet to be corroborated.

GUY

AHHHHHH!

SLIMER

(a bunch of panicked chatter)

We see a man run past with Slimer right behind them.

REPORTER 2

Oh my god… This is uh… Delia Clarke live from the scene at Wine Not wine bar. AHHHH!

The reporter is lifted into the air by an unseen force. The One steps into view and looks directly at the camera. Her eyes glow. The shot cuts.

REPORTER 3

Wow. What a terrible name for a bar. Now over to Dan the Man with sports!

We hear the Ecto-1 take off and rush away.

INT - TYLER AND OSCARS’ HOME

Back upstairs  Oscar kicks the door down with his proton pack. The One reappears.

OSCAR

Who are you?

THE ONE

I do not have one. They just call me ‘The One’.

OSCAR

Original.

(beat)

Back off!

THE ONE

Where is Winston Zeddemore?

OSCAR

What?

THE ONE

Bring me Winston Zeddemore…

OSCAR

I can’t.

THE ONE

NOW!

The water in the tub begins to mold into a giant claw and raise up over the baby, reaching. Oscar lunges to grab his baby before it can get to his son.

THE ONE

(cackles)

The wraith flies out of the room and back to the wine bar. Oscar rushes past the door handing off his son to Tyler.

TYLER

What’s going on?

They hear the sirens of the Ecto-1 approaching.

OSCAR

I’ve got this. Don’t worry.

(kisses his son’s forehead)

Daddy has to go to work now and kick some ghost butt.

TYLER

Be careful.

OSCAR

I’m always careful.

He rushes down the apartment steps then comes back up.

OSCAR

The bright side is now that he’s almost been eaten by a tub I can relate to him on a deeper and, quite literally, a more spiritual level.

TYLER

What?

OSCAR

Be right back!

Play this song - Ghostbusters Instrumental

He rushes downstairs. Just in time as the other Ghostbusters have arrived. Suited up and ready to go. Their proton packs are charged and they go in blazing against the wraith. With a simple movement of her hand objects are thrown and they all scatter trying to avoid it.

NICHELLE

Holy shoot.

EDDIE

Shit. She meant shit. Curse damn you!

ALFRED

What the heck is that thing?!

MAGGIE

This is just a wild guess but I’m thinking that would be the wraith that we’ve been hearing so much about.

EDDIE

Oh. I really should pay more attention.

They all roll out and attack again. Their proton packs shoot and miss the wraith every time but manage to destroy the walls and all of the expensive bottles in the bar.

NICHELLE

Well, this isn’t working.

EDDIE

No shit.

OSCAR

Any bright ideas?

Everyone looks at Maggie.

MAGGIE

Why is everyone looking at me?

(beat)

Nevermind I know why. I got nothing.

OSCAR

Shoot again?

ALFRED

Well, it didn’t work the first time… So yeah. Lets shoot again.

They do. Even more of the wine bar is destroyed and the wraith disappears cackling.

THE ONE (O.C.)

I want Winston Zeddemore. This is your last chance.

EDDIE

Cool. So lets give her Winston Zeddemore. Problem solved.

Nichelle swats him.

EDDIE

Ooooh. THAT Winston Zeddemore. Nevermind.

Police sirens approach. The Ghostbusters emerge friendly.

OSCAR

Officers!

EDDIE

Better late than never I guess. You’ll notice that-

COP

There they are.

The police grab the Ghostbusters and begin to handcuff them.

COP

You’re coming with me.

EDDIE

This is one heck of a thank you.

ALFRED

I don’t think they’re thanking us, Eddie!

EDDIE

They might be.

ALFRED

Who the hell thanks somebody like this?

EDDIE

Danielle.

ALFRED

Who the hell is Danielle?! LET ME AT HIM.

Alfred, handcuffed, launches at Eddie and is pulled back. He tries to kick him as they’re all loaded into a paddywagon. Tyler runs out with his son.

TYLER

Babe… What’s going on?!

OSCAR

I forgot to tip. Call our lawyer.

TYLER

You have a lawyer?

OSCAR

In the address book. In the drawer.

EDDIE

How does he know which drawer?

OSCAR

Trust me he knows!

The caravan pulls away.

INT - JAIL HOLDING - DAY

Alfred stands face against the bars. The other Buster kids behind him.

OSCAR

I’m having that deja vu thing all over again.

EDDIE

Do you want some Tylenol?

ALFRED

Hey guard! What about our phone calls?

Oscar looks at Maggie and Nichelle.

OSCAR

How did you two end up here?

MAGGIE

Oh. They tried to separate us.

NICHELLE

Maggie talked them into circles until they were so confused they agreed to throw us in here if she stopped.

MAGGIE

It’s a skill.

ALFRED

They can’t keep us in here. We were just doing our job.

EDDIE

I dunno man. We destroyed a lot of property. Even by our standards.

ALFRED

It was broadcast on the news. The news! And still these jackasses don’t believe us. What do we have to do to come out on top for once?! Now we’ve got that thing after dad.

EDDIE

The christmas wreath.

MAGGIE

Wraith.

EDDIE

Christmas wraith?

MAGGIE

Just a wraith.

EDDIE

Oh. That makes more sense.

NICHELLE

Maybe if we ask him-

ALFRED

Are you kidding? On certain days he barely remembers what he had for breakfast. How is he going to remember years ago?

MAGGIE

Something awful is about to happen and your dad is clearly the key to whatever this thing wants.

They are soulless creatures that can only feed and feed off of emotions like anger and despair.

EDDIE

And souls.

MAGGIE

And souls. Part ghost and part demon most wraiths are inherently evil.

OSCAR

I think it’s safe to say that this one is.

The prisoners begin to crowd around the Ghostbusters.

PRISONER

Does she have this memorized?

NICHELLE

Sh! Yes.

MAGGIE

Wraiths are extremely powerful creatures and are extremely difficult to overcome. At full power, which this one seems to be, they can only be defeated by a holy presence or weapon. Being pure evil, they are not able to withstand holiness of any kind will be destroyed by the opposing force.

EDDIE

Awesome. Is anybody here holy?

ALFRED

Hell no.

OSCAR

I stopped practicing ages ago.

NICHELLE

I go to church but I don’t think that makes me holy.

MAGGIE

I’m an atheist.

ALFRED

So you’re right out.

EDDIE

Taylor Swift is my church.

ALFRED

If Eddie is our closest bet on holiness I think it’s safe to say that we’re all screwed. Besides, it’s not like we can go anywhere right now anyways, we’re stuck in here.

Just then Louis scurries into view on the opposite side of the bars.

LOUIS

Oh Alfred. It’s you. Ladies… Gentlemen… Everybody… Anybody want to get out of jail today?

Everyone’s hands go up.

LOUIS

Ok. Ok. I meant the kids. Well, they’re adults now but they were kids. I knew them when they were kids you see so they’re kind of like my kids on account of the fact that my wife and I didn’t have any of our own. We love them all you see. Perhaps not the same amount as that’s impossible, there’s definitely a ranking order and we each have our own conflicting order which is bound to happen, but we still love them very much.

NICHELLE

He’s your lawyer?

OSCAR

He’s all of our lawyers. He’s all that we could afford.

LOUIS

Listen. I’ve got some great news. Despite the fact that you totally destroyed that bar with the great name, and your history of property damage which you really shouldn’t keep doing, I was able to find a teeny tiny legal loophole. Only after I got myself stuck on an escalator and had to be rescued by the entire fire department. It was quite the harrowing experience I’ll tell you what. Turns out the restaurant had an illegal kitchen.

ALFRED

That… that’s it?

LOUIS

Yup. So you can go. You can thank your friend for rushing the approval.

OSCAR

Friend?

Arthur Peck steps into view.

EDDIE

Wiener!

ARTHUR

What are you still doing here? You have a ghost to catch. A world to save. That whole thing. All in a day’s work.

(to Eddie)

You were right. I missed it.

A guard comes by and opens the door. The ghostbusters all rush out and hurry out the door. He steps into the cell to try and hug each of them.

NICHELLE

Thanks Uncle Louis!

OSCAR

Yeah thanks!

ALFRED

Thanks big guy.

Everybody, including Arthur, is gone.

LOUIS

Ok! So I’ll see you all later then, huh? I’ll send you a gmail!

He turns to leave but the cell door has closed and he’s stuck inside.

LOUIS

Hello? Hello? Guard? Oh no. Not again.

PRIONER

Wow. I hope they win.

PRISONER 2

You ain’t the only one.

INT - ASSISTED LIVING CENTER - DAY

ORDERLY

Excuse me. You can’t go in there! I said you can’t go in there!

The ghostbusters burst into Winston’s room. It’s empty.

ALFRED

Where is he? The man that was in here? Zeddemore. Winston Zeddemore.

ORDERLY

I can’t give you that information. It’s only for family.

ALFRED

I am family.

ORDERLY

I haven’t seen you.

ARTHUR

It’s true. He is.

NICHELLE

We both are.

OSCAR

We all are.

ORDERLY

You I’ve seen. He got picked up-

EDDIE

By a creepy lady with skeleton hands?!

ORDERLY

No. By a man. He was real bruised up but I’ve seen him before. He comes by every week. There’s lots of yelling about sinking destroyers.

Everyone’s eyes meet.

Play Song at 2:20 - Magic

Cut to: Ray driving an old beat up car with Winston in the passenger seat.

WINSTON

Where are we going?

RAY

To help our kids, Z-Man.

WINSTON

Oh. That’s good. Z-Man. I like that. And I have-

RAY

Two of ‘em. And two grandchildren too. On your daughter’s side. And your son, well, he hasn’t settled down quite yet but I think that’ll be on the way soon enough.

WINSTON

Great. That’s great. Uh…

RAY

Ray.

Quiet as the drive.

WINSTON

Hey, Ray… Do you believe in God?

RAY

No. Never met him.

(quiet. A beat)

But I do love his style, you know?

WINSTON

(smiles)

Hey. Me too.

Ray pulls out some cigarettes from his pocket.

RAY

You want one?

WINSTON

Do I smoke?

RAY

Sometimes.

WINSTON

Then yeah. I guess I do.

Ray helps him light it and they both smoke in the car.

RAY

Hey, Winston.. Do you remember something from the bible about judgement day?

WINSTON

No. But I remember this one: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against-”

RAY

  • “The spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
  •

WINSTON

Ephesians.

RAY

6:12.

(pause)

You remember that?

WINSTON

I guess I do.

(beat)

I wonder who they were talking about.

RAY

Has it ever occurred to you that they were talking about us?

They both look at each other sadly.

RAY

How about a little music?

Play this Song - Disco Inferno

INT - GHOSTBUSTERS HEADQUARTERS

The Ecto-1 pulls up outside. Everyone piles out.

EDDIE

You really should update that siren. It’s not the eighties anymore

MAGGIE

I like it.

ALFRED

Thanks.

ALFRED

So Ray kidnapped our dad. Great.

NICHELLE

I wouldn’t say kidnapped.

ALFRED

Really? What would you call it then, Ni?

EDDIE

A joy excursion? Throwback to the old times maybe. One last hurrah?

ARTHUR

Heck of a time for it.

NICHELLE

Whoah. Pecker. You look good. Grown up.

ARTHUR

Thanks. I tend to look older when I’m not scared for my life.

EDDIE

I say let the old timers have their fun. Those scamps deserve it.

ALFRED

At what cost Eddie? Life isn’t just about having a good time.

EDDIE

Not if you had your way.

ALFRED

What do you mean by that?

EDDIE

You know what I mean.

The PKE meter on Maggie’s desk starts going nuts.

MAGGIE

Uh… Guys?

ALFRED

No. Elaborate.

EDDIE

You’re such a downer man.

NICHELLE

Eddie-

EDDIE

Nobody else is gonna say it so I sure as hell will.

ALFRED

You’re good at that aren’t you?

EDDIE

What?

ALFRED

Running your mouth.

EDDIE

Thank you.

ALFRED

It wasn’t a compliment!

MAGGIE

Guys?

NICHELLE

Would you two cool it?

OSCAR

Everyone just relax. We have more pressing matters to handle right now.

EDDIE

Oh. I bet you do. You always do.

OSCAR

What do you mean by that?

ALFRED

What does he ever mean? I need a dictionary and thesaurus just to look up half the shit that he says!

MAGGIE

GUYS!

ALL BUSTERS BUT MAGGIE

What?

The PKE meter is beeping and blinking to the point that it shorts. Everything inside headquarters begins to tremble, the lights flicker, Slimer races in and hides behind a desk.

SLIMER

(indistinct worried words)

Everyone is thrown to one side as The One appears. Everything around them levitates then is thrown. The group struggles to get up. The sound of wind, the cackling, and everything breaking is deafening.

EXT - GAS STATION - NIGHT

RAY

  1. A very good year except for the fact that you, myself, Venkman, and Spengler all faced off against a group of sister wraiths. We were down and out too. Venkman broke his leg, Egon was knocked out, I was… Well I forget where I was. We thought it was game over. Pull the plug the game is done. But that wasn’t in the cards for you. Not even a thought. You’re a marine and marine never gives up on his squad. Oorah.

WINSTON

Oorah.

RAY

You took on those sisters and you won. You know why Z-Man? Cause you were holy, and I’m not talking about the religious definition either, I’m talking about the actual definition. You were worthy of complete devotion and a perfect example of goodness and righteousness in the world. That’s how you won. And that’s how we’ll win again. So what if she’s totally suped up this time? We’ll figure it out. I’ll help you. You know my hands are helpful not hurtful? I used to think otherwise but for some reason I’ve changed my mind. Weird how that works.

Winston just looks out the window.

RAY

It’s ok that you don’t remember. I’ll do the remembering for the both of us old pal.

Ray parks the car.

RAY

Gonna fuel up. Think you can hold down the fort?

WINSTON

I think I can handle that.

Ray gets out of the car.

RAY

Be right back.

He fills the car with gas.

RAY

You know, all things considered I’m kind of excited to be back at it. Ok. I’m a lot excited. You know me. I’m a little rusty sure but I threw a trap the other week and you wouldn’t believe the distance that it got.

He reaches the car door and watches as it locks.

RAY

Buddy. What are you doing?

Winston rolls down the window a tiny bit.

WINSTON

I’m sorry.

RAY

It’s ok. Just open the door. I’ll show you.

WINSTON

Ray. I lied. I do remember.

RAY

Z-Man, don’t do this.

WINSTON

Tell my kids that I love them. Both of them.

RAY

You can tell them yourself. When you’re back. Where are you going?

WINSTON

To where it all started.

Winston rolls the window back up.

RAY

Good luck.

Winston rolls the window back down.

WINSTON

Oh and Ray?

RAY

Yeah?

WINSTON

You hid behind a beam.

Winston drives away.

RAY

Oh yeah. I did do that.

INT - GHOSTBUSTERS HEADQUARTERS

Chaos still reigns. It’s bad. Really bad.

ARTHUR

Anyone have any bright ideas?

Everyone looks at Maggie expectantly.

MAGGIE

Stop looking at me!

NICHELLE

She’s going to destroy this whole building.

ARTHUR

She?

EDDIE

A Christmas Wraith.

ARTHUR

A what?

ALFRED

God help me, Eddie...

JANINE

(pops up out of nowhere)

Somebody has to do something!

ARTHUR

Janine?! What are you doing here?

JANINE

I work here! But I think after this I’m gonna ask for a raise!

EDDIE

We can take him.

OSCAR

No Eddie. We can’t.

EDDIE

We can. You and I. We can do anything. We’re Venkmans.

OSCAR

Eddie, I don’t think that this is such a good idea-

EDDIE

Come on, Osc!

Eddie charges. Oscar doesn’t follow.

OSCAR

Eddie! Don’t!

By the time Eddie realizes it’s too late. The One with one swift motion of her hand sends him flying through some desks. It hurts. Bad. He lays there.

OSCAR

Eddie!

NICHELLE

Don’t. You’ll make it worse.

JANINE

 Somebody do something!

Arthur looks around desperately. Picks up a framed picture on a desk and chucks it at the hovering wraith who whacks it away with ease. It shatters.

JANINE

(sarcastically)

Yes. That was very helpful.

ARTHUR

No one else was doing anything!

Just then a door opens and Ray steps inside. The wraith shrieks. She is about to launch when a bright light shoots up into the sky from outside. The One smiles, then with a turn disappears.

MAGGIE

Uncle Ray?

RAY

Hey kiddo. You ok?

They hug.

ALFRED

Where’s my dad?

RAY

Now you’re not gonna like this… And I mean you really aren’t going to like this…

ALFRED

Try me.

RAY

He uh… Locked me out of the car and went to fight the wraith on her own turf. Like last time.

ALFRED

Like last time?!

As they all chat Oscar approaches Eddie and offers his hand.

OSCAR

Hey. You ok?

EDDIE

Fine. What? You care all of a sudden?

OSCAR

Of course I care.

EDDIE

Not lately.

OSCAR

Always.

EDDIE

Yeah. You really cared when you left me hanging while I charged at that Christmas O’Keefe-

OSCAR

Wraith. Eddie… I’m sorry. It isn’t like the old times anymore. I have a family to worry about now.

EDDIE

I’m your family.

OSCAR

You are. But I have a son and a husband who I owe it to, to come home.

EDDIE

But I don’t have anybody, right?

OSCAR

You have me. You said it just now. We’re family.

EDDIE

But not by blood right?… So I guess that doesn’t matter to you.

OSCAR

I never said that.

EDDIE

You didn’t have to. I’m out of here. You can save the day all on your own.

Eddie storms out.

OSCAR

Eddie! Wait!

ALFRED

And you didn’t think to tell us earlier?

RAY

I didn’t think it was related

ALFRED

How many wraiths are there in this town?

RAY

The exact number or the number that I’ve encountered so far?

ALFRED

Enough! Enough! You know what? I’m done. I’m out of here.

Alfred begins to take off his uniform and weaponry.

NICHELLE

Alfie, what are you doing?

ALFRED

This is all dad’s doing. Not mine. This isn’t me. I don’t want to carry it anymore. Any of it. I’m finished with it all.

NICHELLE

You don’t mean that.

ALFRED

I do. I really do. How much of our lives are we going to spend, all of us, cleaning up our dads’ mess. I’m sorry Ray but- No. You know what? I’m not sorry. Because it’s true. How much of our lives are we going to give over to this? I worked in a garage. I liked working in that garage. I liked it a whole hell of a lot and one day I blink my eyes and now I’m becoming my father? Working the same job, for the same amount of thanks, and going through the same bullshit? Hell, I’m even wearing his damn unform. I don’t think so.

NICHELLE

Please Alfie. You’re upset. You’re frustrated. You don’t mean any of this.

ALFRED

(raises his voice at her)

Nichelle, for once in your life just leave somebody alone and let them do what they want to do!

Quiet.

ALFRED

Let dad handle this. I wouldn’t even know where to start.

MAGGIE

The beginning?

Alfred exits.

OSCAR

What do we do now?

NICHELLE

(getting herself together)

We follow through.

MAGGIE

With the current group it’s a twenty two percent chance of a death mission.

ARTHUR

Are you sure you all want to do this? Those aren’t the best odds.

NICHELLE

We do it for our kids. To keep the world safe for them. We’re doing it for them.

OSCAR

Right.

Play this Song - Tik Tock

Everyone suits up and heads to the car. Arthur emerges from the building wearing a Ghostbusters uniform.

OSCAR

Whoah, Peck. Looking good buddy.

ARTHUR

You think so? I just didn’t want to be the only one not wearing the same thing. I have this weird thing about matching.

OSCAR

Same here. First time in one of these?

ARTHUR

Yeah.

MAGGIE

Second. Not in a bedroom.

ARTHUR

Ok. That was behind closed doors and you were sworn to secrecy!

(sighs)

I guess I just never felt like I belonged in one. I wasn’t born into it and I only ever sat at the desk.

JANINE

You’re a Buster. Same as me. Don’t forget your pack.

Janine puts a pack on Arthur and he immediately falls to the ground from the weight. She doesn’t help him get back up.

JANINE

(teary)

They grow up so fast.

NICHELLE

Alfie took the Ecto-1.

OSCAR

He loves that car.

RAY

Never fear. Ray is here.

Tosses Nichelle the keys to a vehicle.

NICHELLE

I thought dad took your car.

RAY

He did. This isn’t mine.

NICHELLE

Aren’t you coming?

RAY

Only room enough for you folks. Maggie and I are going to find another way. Besides, only a Zeddemore drives. Them’s the rules. Good luck kids.

NICHELLE

Thanks.

RAY

(calling to all)

To the Manhattan Museum!

Everyone piles into their separate vehicles and drives away.

INT - MANHATTAN MUSEUM - NIGHT

Winston moves through the dark museum. It is closed. He waves under some rope, through some exhibits and into a back room. Everything is floating around.

WINSTON

This must be it.

A fizzle sound and the wraith appears looking more lively and powerful than ever.

THE ONE

He has arrived.

WINSTON

As requested. You know, this would have been a whole heck of a lot easier if you uh.. Came to me directly.

THE ONE

But where’s the fun in that?

WINSTON

You didn’t know where to find me did you?

THE ONE

(shrieks)

ENOUGH!

He slams against the ceiling and lands back on the floor before her, forced to kneel. She hovers above him.

WINSTON

What are you waiting for? Kill me!

THE ONE

Not yet. You made me watch as you did away with my sisters and now it’s your turn. Don’t you worry. You’ll perish… And your family will be around to watch.

WINSTON

No…

THE ONE

They’re on their way right now. Some of them are on their way right now. I can feel it.

WINSTON

Which ones?

Play this song - If We’re Being Honest

EXT - WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK - NIGHT

Eddie and Alfred sit on the hood of the Ecto-1 nursing their beers in brown paper bags. Alfred looks away and when he looks back Maggie is there.

MAGGIE

Hi.

ALFRED

Hi.

MAGGIE

Having fun?

ALFRED

Loads.

EDDIE

Can’t you tell?

MAGGIE

What are you both doing?

EDDIE

What’s it look like? Hanging out. Drinking. Pondering our life’s decisions.

MAGGIE

When do you expect to be all done with that? Because we have to meet the others at the museum.

EDDIE

Are you high?

MAGGIE

No. It clouds the brain. I have pondered trying psychedelics once as I’m told it’s a mind opening experience but I’m afraid of what I might uncover.

EDDIE

No. We’re not going to meet anybody at any museum.

MAGGIE

We need your help. Oscar needs your help.

EDDIE

Yeah. Lot of help he gave me back at headquarters. Why should I help him?

MAGGIE

You’re family.

EDDIE

Not really.

Maggie backhand slaps Eddie.

EDDIE

She… She bitch slapped me!

MAGGIE

I don’t like that word.

EDDIE

I don’t like being bitch slapped!

She raises her hand again.

EDDIE

Ok! Ok!

MAGGIE

You are Oscar’s family. You’re my family. You’re our family. We chose you. That is just as strong as blood and even more special.

EDDIE

Yeah?

ALFRED

I mean, I can’t stand you a lot of the time and you’re here drinking a forty in my car so… Yeah. Family.

EDDIE

Awesome.

He leans forward to kiss her but her hand stops him.

MAGGIE

No. That’s not what this is. You can be friends with a woman without trying to shove your tongue in her mouth.

EDDIE

I can? Well, damn.

She goes to the other side of the car and looks at Alfred.

ALFRED

So...

MAGGIE

So...

ALFRED

You have any inspirational words for me?

MAGGIE

Some. Do I need to use them?

ALFRED

Couldn’t hurt.

(changes how he was sitting to be more presentiational)

Whenever you’re ready.

MAGGIE

I mean, the world might potentially end and I came all this way.

Beat.

MAGGIE

You never gave up on me.

ALFRED

So you’re not giving up on me.

MAGGIE

Sounds reasonable.

ALFRED

Very.

MAGGIE

You don’t have to do anything that you don’t want to do, Alfie.

ALFRED

Then why are you here?

MAGGIE

Because I know this isn’t what you want. I’m giving you one last shot.

EDDIE

Generous.

ALFRED

Quiet Eddie.

MAGGIE

You’re not mad at your dad. You’re mad at the situation he’s in. You’re mad at yourself. And that’s ok. I’ll be here until you’re not.

ALFRED

I don’t want to end up like my dad, Mags.

MAGGIE

I don’t think that we have any control over such things. And, I want to remind you, that you saw I’m smart-

ALFRED

-You are.

MAGGIE

Well, as the most intelligent person here I happen to think you should want to be exactly like your dad.

ALFRED

I should?

MAGGIE

Peter, Ray, my dad… They all came out of Columbia University. The same kind of thought. They were all men of science. Winston wasn’t a scientist. He was an ordinary man that did an extraordinary job. He had nothing at stake at the time but went through with it because it was right. That’s what makes him the most special out of all of them.

ALFRED

I guess.

MAGGIE

And you’re just like him in that way. And that’s great.

ALFRED

But what if I’m not? What if I mess this whole thing up?

MAGGIE

I live every single day trying to make my dad proud and I know that you do too...

ALFRED

How?

MAGGIE

Because I love you. I’ve loved you my whole life.

They smile at each other. Eddie from the back of the car.

EDDIE

Called it!

EXT - MUSEUM - NIGHT

Nichelle, Oscar, and Arthur gather by the stairs in their gear. Waiting. In the distance a clock chimes.

OSCAR

Well, that’s it. Guess it’s just us.

ARTHUR

Maybe they’re lost?

OSCAR

Unlikely. They probably just wised up. We should have too.

NICHELLE

You don’t mean that.

OSCAR

Well then where are they, Ni? Huh? There’s only one Manhattan Museum. That’s why it’s the Manhattan Museum,,,

(catches self)

Sorry.

NICHELLE

Everyone better stop yelling at me right quick.

OSCAR

I’m not mad at you. Mad at myself.

NICHELLE

Ok. Keep it to yourself then.

(sighs)

I really thought that they would be here.

They turn to enter the building when…

ARTHUR

Look.

They do.

Play this song at 2:08 - If I’m Being Honest

From around the corner walks Alfred and Maggie holding hands. Eddie and Ray beside them. Eddie tosses his empty beer can and completely misses the trash but still walks like a badass anyways. Oscar runs to hug Eddie, Nichelle runs and embraces her twin brother. Arthur looks awkwardly at Maggie. They both shake hands. Ray then gives her a big hug because he doesn’t want her left out. The gang's back together.

NICHELLE

You came back.

ALFRED

A new record for the amount of time it took me to wise up, huh?

EDDIE

Did you see me sink that shot?

OSCAR

Sure did.

EDDIE

Wasn’t it epic?

NICHELLE

I’m glad that you’re here..

ALFRED

Had a little help.

He nods toward Maggie who is talking to Ray.

NICHELLE

Oh. Ooooohhhh. I always wanted a sister.

ALFRED

Easy. Easy.

NICHELLE

You go easy. This is the type of excitement I live for. I’m already picking out your china patterns.

He walks away from her toward Maggie. Nichelle watches.

NICHELLE

Alfred. Maggie. Alfie… Oh my gosh. It was right there the whole time and I completely missed it! Ugh!

OSCAR

Next time you need my help I’m there by your side. No matter what. Just like you’ve been for me in the past.

EDDIE

What are big brothers for?

OSCAR

You’re younger than me...

EDDIE

Older in heart!

OSCAR

You know what? Sure.

ALFRED

Thanks.

MAGGIE

Anytime. Well, maybe not anytime. Janine had a premonition I’m going to die soon but I don’t believe in those sort of things.

(breaking off to rejoin the group)

Lets get a move on!

RAY

Everybody suited up? Great. I’ve been told expressly in person and in text to stay out here and man the command center in Ecto-1 so that’s where I’ll be if you need me.Everyone can reach me on their coms.

ARTHUR

Coms?

MAGGIE

Press this.

He does. A small square lights up and reveals that it’s tracking their voices and they can hear each other.

RAY

Great. Go get her, team.

They head inside.

RAY

But don’t actually go get her because that hasn’t worked twice now that I’ve seen!

(It’s too late. They’re gone.)

Oh damnit.

The gang sneaks through the dark museum halls while having hushed conversation.

OSCAR

Ray said she would be in the backroom.

NICHELLE

This whole place is a backroom.

ALFRED

It would be labeled storage probably.

OSCAR

Isn’t this whole place technically storage?

MAGGIE

I was wrong earlier.

EDDIE

Huh? You’re never wrong.

MAGGIE

Well, I was.

EDDIE

About what?

MAGGIE

Women can in fact bust in the way you were implying.

NICHELLE

Gross.

OSCAR

Guys, I don’t think now is the time.

EDDIE

Hell yeah, Mags. Hell yeah.

MAGGIE

And bustin’ felt good.

EDDIE

Ok. That’s enough. I’m good.

ALFRED

Thank you.

MAGGIE

Thank you .

EDDIE

Ok. Nevermind. Everyone cross the streams and aim at me.

NICHELLE

Guys, we’re here.

They enter the room where everything is floating. They are greeted by a desk being thrown at them which they all dodge.

THE ONE

We’ve been expecting you.

EDDIE

It’s nice to be wanted.

NICHELLE

Dad!

ALFRED

Dad! Are you ok?

WINSTON

Huh?

ALFRED

Dad. Don’t move. We’re going to help you.

THE ONE

I would like to see you try.

Alfred and Nichelle at once make a mad dash toward their father but are immediately hoisted into the air and thrown into their friends who all fall like bowling pins. Groaning.

ALFRED

That was really stupid.

MAGGIE

Ray can you hear me?

RAY (OC)

No. Wait yes. Kind of?

ARTHUR

You?

MAGGIE

Yeah. Zeddemores?

ALFRED & NICHELLE

No.

MAGGIE

Venkmans, how about you?

OSCAR & EDGAR

Eh…

Everyone gets back up. It’s a struggle.

ALFRED

Ready.

NICHELLE

Steady.

OSCAR

Go.

They all blast the wraith with their streams. She just laughs.

THE ONE

Oooo. That tickles. Is that all you got?

EDDIE

Is it supposed to tickle?

MAGGIE

Like a thousand suns.

EDDIE

Uh guys… I don’t think it’s working!

They turn them off.

OSCAR

We’re in big trouble Ray.

RAY

(frantically flipping through a manual on wraiths)

Hold on. Hold on.

OSCAR

I don’t think we have that luxury right now!

RAY

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. Oh no.

The One grabs Winston from behind and holds him with her now skeletal hand clawing at his neck. It leaves marks. The buildings surrounding the museum begin to shake and Ray dives for cover while still manning the command station.

RAY

It’s getting real bad out here you guys.

ALFRED

Dad!

THE ONE

And now you watch. Just like I watched all of those years ago.

NICHELLE

Alfie. There has to be something we can do.

ALFRED

I know. I know. I’m thinking.

WINSTON

Son! It’s ok. You can do this.

ALFRED

Hey! Get your hands off of him.

THE ONE

And you’re going to stop me I presume?

ALFRED

I am.

He steps toward her alone.

THE ONE

And how is that? I’m immortal. All powerful. Fully restored. And I have what I came here for.

I’ve won.

WINSTON

Alfred…

Play this Song - Saturn

Alfred looks at his dad. His father looks back. It is then that much like with his sister, Alfred knows what his dad is thinking, and he knows what must be done. Both are sad.

ALFRED

(quietly)

No you haven’t.

THE ONE

What?

ALFRED

I said… No. You haven’t won.

THE ONE

And why is that?

ALFRED

Because I won’t let you. Because this isn’t how it ends. Because a Zeddemore never gives up. Because… I’m just like my dad.

WINSTON

Do it! Now!

He aims his proton gun at the wraith and shoots. She screeches in pain.

EDDIE

Oh. That’s not a tickle.

NICHELLE

(crying)

DAD!

OSCAR

What? What’s going on? Our packs didn’t work before. What changed?

EDDIE

What do we do?

This time nobody looks at Maggie. She meanwhile watches what unfolds and begins to piece it together.

MAGGIE

I have an idea.

They all turn and look.

ALFRED

Because this time I’m not alone.

It’s then that multiple hands come to hold onto him one by one.

ALFRED

We’re tough. We’re stubborn as all hell. We’re unlucky as shit. But we get the job done. We are our father’s kids. All of us. We’re Ghostbusters… And we’re not going anywhere.

MAGGIE

Turn it up!

OSCAR

Everybody! Hold on!

The Ghostbusters anchor him, holding him into place as the wraith blasts every bit of power that she has at him. Alfred’s proton pack blast seems MUCH stronger than usual like something else is at work. They step closer and closer to the wraith who holds onto Winston. Out of the corner of his eye Alfred sees Maggie reach out. Not again!

ALFRED

What are you doing-

A huge blast. Everything goes black. Quiet. Alfred’s eyes eventually flutter open. He’s surrounded by dust and debris. It’s over. Almost. Where are his friends? He gets up onto all fours coughing.

ALFRED

Ni… Ni… Ni where are you?

NICHELLE

Over here!

They embrace.

ALFRED

Dad?

NICHELLE

No.

(going back to looking for their friends)

Maggie?

ALFRED

Oscar?

NICHELLE & ALFRED

Eddie?

EDDIE

You rang?

Eddie has somehow ended up outside the window. He waves cheerily.

OSCAR

We’re all good over here.

EDDIE

Hey, Zeddemores. Check it out! Two Venkman’s one window!

Arthur climbs out from under a table, dirty.

ARTHUR

That wasn’t funny the first eight times you said it.

EDDIE

Ah. But the ninth time is where it’ll get really good.

NICHELLE

That’s one, two, three, we’re four, and five… Maggie?

ALFRED

Mags?

Play this song at 4:11 - Saturn

Alfred and Nichelle go searching. Alfred sees that one wall has a big chunk blown off where the wraith and his dad were. He walks through it and finds Maggie searching through the rubble in a daze.

ALFRED

Mags! There you are.

MAGGIE

Hi.

ALFRED

What were you thinking? You weren’t thinking.

MAGGIE

I’m always thinking.

ALFRED

What were you doing? Trying to see your dad again? He’s gone Mags. You have to stop-

She holds her hand out and reveals Winston’s dog tags. Alfred is stunned. She puts them around his neck.

MAGGIE

There. A good fit.

He kisses her. Several heads belonging to the Ghostbuster kids poke around the wall along with Ray.

OSCAR

Called it.

Arthur pays Ray a few bucks.

ARTHUR

How did you know?

RAY

Like any guardian dear pecker, I know all.

EDDIE

Yeah. They been bustin’ big time.

NICHELLE

Ugh. Boys!

OSCAR & EDDIE

(singing)

And it feels good!

They leave the museum to see that, once again like in the first film, a crowd has gathered. They go through saying hello, signing autographs, celebrating. When they reach the back they see Walter Peck and Dana Barrett standing there with their arms folded. All of the Ghostbusters avoid them and walk the other way piling into the car. We follow the Ecto-1 to Ghostbuster headquarters with the same swinging sign we saw all those years ago in 1984. A scene from the past plays. We see a young Winston looking up at the sign and then entering.

JANINE

Do you believe in UFOs, astral projections, mental telepathy, ESP, clairvoyance, spirit photography, telekinetic movement, full trance mediums, the Loch Ness monster and the theory of Atlantis?

WINSTON

Ah, if there's a steady paycheck in it, I'll believe anything you say.

Back to the present all of the Ghostbuster kids, along with Janine, Louis, and Ray gather for celebratory drinks. Cheers. Credits roll.

END CREDITS SCENE: Our camera pans through the Manhattan Museum. Through the destruction. There is a clean up crew. They are hard at work on every floor. Even the basement.

WORKER 3

They sure made a mess of things didn’t they? Whoah. Wait a second. What do we have here?

Moving some paintings aside the infamous masterpiece painting of the Ghostbusters from the original Ghostbusters 2 is revealed in all of its glory.

WORKER 3

Wow. You ever seen anything like this?

Worker 2, the same one from the river, turns to face Worker 3.

WORKER 2

Can’t say that I have.

WORKER 3

Weird looking thing, ain’t it?

WORKER 2

Be careful with it. No telling how much it’s worth. Don’t want to mess it up.

WORKER 3

Good call. I’ll bring it upstairs.

Worker 3 does so. When they’re gone Worker 2 looks to camera. Smiles. Their eyes glow red. The screen goes black.
