This entire evening was turning out to be a lesson in perfection. When I'd gotten the call from Juice's burner this afternoon as Hap and I were headed back from a run over to Cara Cara, I'd expected to hear Juice asking if we wanted to go out for a longer ride around the county. Juice had been acting a mite distracted lately, and so it really wouldn't have surprised me to find that he needed to clear his head. To say I was surprised to hear a woman's voice on the other end of the line would be an understatement.
Sarah was calm when she called, though. She'd merely asked me if I were a Son. I said yes and she told me that it would be helpful if I came with any other Son who was handy to help Juice out of a situation. "A situation," was exactly how she'd put it and I shook my head at the thought. I didn't know then if it was intentional, but given our discussion over the meal, I had a feeling it was. The lass was smart and I wouldn't put it past her to realize she shouldn't specify that Juice was kicking some frat-boy ass over a cell line.
Now, here I was, sitting across from Sarah and Juice, enjoying the fuck out of every story I told the lass about the brother sitting next to her. Juice didn't really have a family out here, and so someone had to step in to embarrass him in front of his girl, yeah?
That Sarah was his girl was easily apparent. Although I knew they hadn't had much interaction, so there were still things to establish and work out, I could see the way that he looked at her when she wasn't watching. The lad was nearly beside himself. Sarah, for her part, seemed to have just as much interest. When he was looking at Hap or I, I would see her give Juicy boy a look. I recognized that look as similar to the one my Erin would give me. It wasn't fully developed yet - it needed cultivation on Juice's part - but if he wasn't a complete dumbass, he'd find happiness with this lass.
"Alright, already." Juice muttered to me and I gave him a grin. He knew exactly what I was doing.
"Ah, don't be a spoil sport, Rocky." Sarah said and my smile broadened as his face was overtaken by surprise.
"Rocky?" He asked her and she shrugged.
"One hit took out the first guy." She explained and I saw a slight redness to Juice's neck. Now, that couldn't be passed up. I may be a brother, but I'm not above being an asshole.
"Aw, Juicy boy. You're blushing." I commented and saw with pride his death glare as Hap chuckled beside me. For her part, Sarah jogged his shoulder.
"Don't listen to him, Rocky. He's just jealous that it took him a couple of minutes to put down one of the three after you'd already been wailing on them." She said with a smirk in my direction and I tilted my glass at her in appreciation. The lass was quick witted. I liked it.
"Now, not to break up the party, but I have to figure out a way to get to work tomorrow, and that will require getting my car squared away." She said with a smile.
"Whas' wrong wi' yer car, lass?" I asked and she twisted her lips.
"It's not so much that something is wrong with it." She responded and Hap and I gave each other a look. Her response sounded a hell of a lot like what we would get out of our women when they were trying to hide something from us. Juice picked up on it, no doubt having gotten used to Erin and Mia.
"Sarah?" He asked and she blushed a bit. That confirmed it. My Erin would do the same when she was trying not to fess up to something she thought I didn't want to hear.
"I ran out of gas about a mile before you caught up to me." She answered Juice and he raised his brows.
"You're kidding," he said and she looked down, but then squared her shoulders and looked back up at him.
"Nope. It's cool, though. I have it handled." I didn't like that response and I could tell that Juice didn't either. One wouldn't need to "handle" a lack of gas. Usually, it was just an annoyance that you fix and then laugh about. Using the words she had suggested that there might be something underlying going on. Juice gave Hap and I a look and we nodded.
"Well, lass. I' was good actually meeting ya. Don' be a stranger." I said and jogged Hap's shoulder. Juice was going to need a bit of time alone with Sarah to find out the problem.
I watched Chibs and Hap head out of the diner doors and turned back to Sarah.
"You don't have the money for gas, do you?" I asked. It was risky, putting the question to her. She may be too proud to admit it and if so, I'd be stepping into shit by merely voicing it. But, I knew she'd lost her job because of me. Although it seemed she'd found something else, there was sure to be a lag between checks. The last thing I wanted was for her to be struggling.
She looked over the diner before responding. "Meh. There are worst things than walking." Her answer didn't commit to it, but I was quickly learning that she talked around subjects she didn't like. And this was my fault.
"What street did you leave it on?" I asked and she murmured "Main". I nodded and then took out my phone and dialed up one of the prospects. "There's a," I looked to Sarah, who mouthed "Chevy" at me. "There's a Chevy on Main that needs a full tank of gas. Handle that and take it back to the Sunrise apartments before midnight."
The prospect gave me a yes and I ended the call to find Sarah looking at me with a question in her eyes. "What?" I asked and she shook her head.
"You can just tell someone to do that and they do it?" She asked and I shrugged.
"Depends on what I need. Mostly, yeah, though. The club is family. You take care of family." I responded and she looked away.
"Not all families." She murmured, and I could tell that she was talking mostly to herself. I wanted to press, but I didn't want this night to end on a sour note. So, instead I got up and held out my hand to her.
"Come for a ride with me." I demanded and I noted with satisfaction that she didn't hesitate this time. Rather, she put her hand in mine and kept it there while I walked her out to my bike. When we got there, I got on first and she slid in behind me. God, it felt amazing to have her there, her hands on my sides. But, because I wanted more, I pulled her hands around to my stomach so that she had to lean fully into me. Once I'd secured her where I wanted her, I fired up the Harley and we took off.
