Emergency

Work Text:

Asami Sato was a busy woman. It does not take a genius to know that her work schedule is absolutely packed. Being the CEO of Future Industries, she has an entire company to manage and care for. Her work was important, she was improving the lives of so many people with the company's innovation, drive, and promise to make the world a better place while providing employees with a conducive work environment.

So yes, Asami was very busy, and Korra knew this well. She had witnessed the number of afterhours Asami clocks in just to reach deadlines faster, or taking on extra responsibilities so that the workers can go home to their families just that little bit earlier.

Suffice to say, Korra would never interrupt her at work. When Asami received a phone call from her girlfriend during a business meeting, she knew something was up. After politely excusing herself, she answered the call.

"Korra? Is everything alright-"

"Asami, I found Naga in the forest. I think she got bit by a snake and- and I'm rushing over to the vet right now."

Asami's heart dropped when she heard Korra's frantic voice. She could hear heavy breathing from the other end of the phone, Korra's voice wavered as she blurted out the news.

"I don't know what to do, fuck I- Naga is in the backseat and I'm driving as fast as I can. I just realised you must be busy with work I am so sorry for interrupting." Even when panicking out of her mind, Korra's concern and selflessness still shined through.

Asami took a steadying breath. Korra was probably losing her mind. Asami loved Naga, but nothing could compare to the connection Korra shared with the special dog.

"You're doing great Love, but I need you to take some deep breaths. You shouldn't be driving while you're working yourself into a panic."

"But your work-"

"Work can wait Korra, let me be here for you." Asami opened the door to her private office and closed the door. The company can hold its own for a few minutes; her girlfriend deserves nothing but her undivided attention.

She could hear shaky breaths from the other end, along with soft whines that must be coming from Naga. Asami's heart ached for the both of them.

"That's it, just breathe. Which vet clinic are you heading to?"

"I think I'm gonna head over to the one in Birmingham. That's where Naga gets her usual check-ups."

"Do you remember the name of the clinic?"

Korra rambled on about the name and location of the clinic as Asami patiently listened. "I'll call them up and tell them you're on your way over. I'll meet you there hopefully in an hour or two."

"You don't have to do this Asami, calling them up is plenty enough."

"I have to, I want to be there for both you and Naga. Just hang tight alright?"

Korra gave a nervous chuckle. "God Asami, I love you. Please don't drop everything just to wait in a stuffy room with me. I think I'll be reaching in 10.

"And I love you too, everything is going to be alright." With their goodbyes said, Asami did a quick google search and called up the clinic. She then dialled up Jinora, her trusted advisor.

"Hey boss, what do you need?"

"Clear my schedule for the day. And if possible, postpone my meetings or reschedule them to be online."

"I'll see what I can do, I can't make any promises, but I can probably reschedule most of the meetings to be online."

Asami let out a sigh of relief as she stood to pack her belongings. "You're the best, thank you so much."

As Asami ended the call, she brisk walked to the elevator, repeatedly pressing on the buttons as if the lift would travel faster if she did. Whatever work related issues could wait, she needed to be by Korra's side no matter what.

Deep breaths. Just keep calm. Korra could feel every cell in her body vibrating with worry. She should have been more careful while out in the woods.

The day started out pretty good. She and Asami had started the day making breakfast together, dancing around the kitchen in a jovial mood. It was an off day for Korra, so she had planned to head into the woods to relax and spend time with Naga. Little did she know, a rattlesnake had appeared. Before she could formulate a plan on how to get to safety, Naga swooped in to protect her master.

"Why didn't I hold Naga back? This is my fault. Naga is hurt and it's my fault..." Dark thoughts swirled around Korra's mind. She could never forgive herself if something terrible happened to her best companion.

The jingle of a windchime followed by heels clacking on marbled floors alerted Korra of someone's presence. She looked up to see Asami gazing softly at her, worry evident on her face as the CEO made her way to her side.

"Asami..." Korra's arms were shaking. She could feel her fingers twitch, her leg bouncing up and down. It was too much. Something inside her begged for comfort.

And comfort was what Asami hoped to deliver. "It's alright, I'm here." Her arms were wide open in invitation.

The moment those words left her, Korra lunged at Asami, burying herself into the crook of her neck. Quiet sobs and shaking limbs made Asami hold her tighter. Korra could not hold herself together anymore, so Asami will do it for her.

"Shhhh, you're okay. Naga is gonna be okay." Hands threaded through short, sweaty hair. Korra pressed herself against Asami's chest almost in desperation.

"When they took Naga, she wasn't making any noise. She was so quiet Asami its like she-" her breath hitched. "I can't think about it!"

Asami continued to embrace Korra, doing the best she could to soothe the raging storm that is Korra's emotions. She held Korra's hands in a warm grip when they trembled, she rubbed arms when they began to twitch, she ran her hands up and down her thighs, grounding her.

"Naga is the best, she'll pull through." Asami affirmed. "She will."

Korra let herself believe those words, let Asami's promise pull her from the deep ocean of negative thoughts she was swimming in.

"I don't know what came over me. The whole ride here felt like a blur..." Asami looked down to monitor how Korra was doing. She was looking miserable, eyes puffy and hair tangled in a bunch.

"Do you wanna talk about it?"

Korra sat up to face her. "I think so, but only if you're willing to listen." Asami gave her an encouraging nod.

"I've never been so scared before. I was panicking so badly I almost forgot how to start the car. Everything seemed so...overwhelming."

"Like the world was crashing down on you?" Asami offered.

"Yeah, I didn't even notice a snake was in the forest. If it wasn't Naga, someone else could be hurt. Me, a neighbour..." Korra began to trail off.

"It could have been you too." Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Asami gave Korra's arms slow rubs. "If anything like that did happen, I trust that you'll jump in and do the best you can to help."

"But what if-"

"Korra. There's no point in focusing on the what if's, you managed to get Naga to the vet and she's getting treatment." Asami had cupped Korra's cheek, rubbing away the newly formed tears in her eyes.

"Naga will get through this, and I'll be with you for every step of the way."

Asami tugged at Korra's shoulders, guiding her to lay her head on her chest. Her breathing evened out and she let herself sink into Asami's arms.

"Get some shuteye, it’ll be a while before we get an update." Asami suggested.

Korra concluded that it would be in her best interest if she got a little sleep. "Are you sure you're okay with me using you as a pillow?"

"Mmm it's alright." Asami said. "There's no one else around. Besides, you're comfy." She reinforced her point by snuggling closer.

Well, if Asami's fine with it, why not. Korra let herself drift to sleep, mumbling prayers that she would wake up to the news that Naga was well.

A door clicked open, revealing a young women dressed in a white lab coat with a clipboard in hand. The sound of approaching footsteps woke Korra from her slumber.

"Hello there, I'm En Yi. I assume you're Naga's owner?" Her tone was polite and calming, something both Korra and Asami appreciated.

"How is she?" Korra asked eagerly, still a little disorientated from her nap.

"Naga is going to be just fine." En Yi reassured. "She's a very strong girl, we managed to flush all the toxins out before they did any real damage. The doctors would like to keep her here for the night to monitor her situation."

Asami gave Korra's side a gentle squeeze. "Is it okay if we see her? I think my girlfriend would be too worried if she didn't."

En Yi smiled sweetly. "I understand. Once we move her into the recovery pen, I'll bring you in."

"Thank you, thank you so much!" Korra reached forward to shake the veterinarian's hand.

As En Yi disappeared into the back room, Korra fell slumped the bench behind her. "She's gonna be okay."

"She's gonna be okay." Asami repeated. She joined Korra on the bench, wrapping her arm around her waist to pull her closer.

Korra felt the weight in her heart and mind lift significantly. For the first time in the last few hours, she allowed herself to relax.

"You could at least take the couch."

"Nonsense. The pen is big enough to house a dog and a human."

Korra settled herself among the miscellaneous blankets and pillows she had stolen from around the house. Asami could not help but grin at how adorable her girlfriend looked sitting in a dog pen snuggled up to Naga.

The moment Korra had received a call saying Naga was given the all clear to go home, she rushed to the clinic as soon as possible to pick her up. The dog in question looked absolutely tired when she stepped out of the recovery room. However, the moment she had caught sight of Korra, she was walking as fast as she could to greet her. (Naga would usually bound energetically towards her. But in her current state, walking would suffice.)

En Yi had instructed her to provide a small area Naga could rest in for the next few days. A cone was also placed around her neck in order to prevent her from licking the bite area.

Asami had returned home that day to see Korra moving blankets and pillows into Naga's old playpen. She was elated to see Naga safe and sound, cuddling up next to Korra as she whined about the transparent cone around her neck.

"Are you really going to sleep there tonight?" Asami questioned.

"Uhm. Yes? I don't want to leave you alone in bed but..." A slight blush dusted Korra's cheeks.

Asami let out a sigh as she made her way to the bathroom. Korra mentally facepalmed herself for her actions, she hoped Asami was not too annoyed with her. She gave Naga a few chin scratches, in an attempt to soothe the both of them.

The duo stayed that way for a while, Korra giving Naga affectionate scratches as she thought of ways she could make it up to her girlfriend. Just as she was forming a short apology speech in her head, the bathroom door unlocked.

Asami stepped out in a baggy hoodie and shorts, drying her hair off with a towel as she made her way to the living room. Even in home clothes with no makeup, Asami still looked like a goddess.

The CEO stood over Korra, her shadow towering over her slightly.

"Asami I-"

"Move over you dork. I hope this old playpen fit's 3." Asami stepped unlocked the latch to let herself in.

"You're not mad?" Korra asked, shifting to accommodate her girlfriend.

"Why would I be? Naga means a lot to the both of us." Asami leaned in to kiss Korra's nose. "And knowing that big heart of yours, you would sleep anywhere just help her through this."

Korra felt herself melt into Asami's embrace at those words. She must have been a saint in her previous life to have received the best girlfriend in the world. And hopefully... the best wife in future?

Korra's grin made Asami's heart burst with love and affection. The previous 24 hours had been an absolute whirlwind of emotions and she was grateful for the downtime.

A low grumble interrupted the peaceful cuddle session. Korra sat up slightly, a sheepish smile on her face as she rubbed the back of her neck.

"You haven't eaten much the past few hours, have you?" Asami teased as she poked Korra's side.

"I was too nervous, should have picked up dinner on the drive home."

"I'll check the fridge and whip up something simple. It's about time I put the skills you taught me to use."

"Are you sure you don't want me to help? Naga's almost asleep anyways."

"You two look comfy, we wouldn't want to wake her majesty, would we?" Asami slowly got up from her spot in the playpen and stretched.

"I love you, just call me over if you need help." Korra watched as the love of her life sauntered away to the kitchen

Asami turned to give her a salute. "I will, love you too.”
