Amity looked at herself in the mirror, still not used to her new hair. Purple instead of green, loose instead of tied, shorter than it had been. Her mom certainly wasn’t happy about it and she had some doubts herself, wondering if she should re-dye it. But then she remembered the way Luz looked at her, the way she blushed when Amity opened the door, the way Luz’s eyes widened when Amity kissed her cheek.
Her own face grew hot at the memory and she didn’t have to look to know her whole face was red. She still couldn’t believe she did that! She kissed Luz! She left before Luz could react but she was too embarrassed. That was two days ago.
She hadn’t seen Luz much since then, at least not alone. They’d see each other in school but they didn’t have much time to talk. Amity had her job at the library after school and Luz said something about writing letters with... the bird tube. But still they managed to make plans for later tonight. Amity got Edric and Emira to cover for her, after they teased her about the kiss and wished her luck on her date.
“It’s not a date! We’re just hanging out, since we didn’t have much free time these past few days.” Amity looked herself in the mirror once again.
“Right, not a date. So what’s with the dress? And the food?” Emira snickered as she leaned over her sister, now wearing a pink dress with short sleeves. She also spend all day trying to figure out what food to bring since now she knew that Luz couldn’t eat everything on the Isles.
“At least I’m honest when I say I go on dates.” Edric chimed in leaning against the door frame.
Amity sighed, she walked up to her bed, sitting down with her hands in her lap, a sad a conflicted look on her face.
“Hey what’s wrong Mittens?” Edric walked over, followed by Emira.
“I... want this to be a date but we didn’t really talk about it and I don’t know if Luz thinks its a date. I already surprised her with that kiss, I don’t want to scare her away.” The young witch hid her face behind her hands, groaning and blushing.
“Don’t worry, Luz is head over heals for you. You shouldn’t stress over this too much. Other than the fact that its your first date ever.” Edric laughed.
Emira swatted at her brother’s arm, “In any case, you and Luz clearly like each other, anyone can see that. Just be yourself, Luz seems to like nerdy types.”
Amity narrowed her eyes at her siblings briefly before smiling, “Thanks, I think.” Amity got up from the bed, picked up a basket and walked out. As she walked away from the Manor she turned and waived at Ed and Em, who responded by giving her a thumbs up.
Meanwhile in the Owl House, Luz was pacing back and forth in the living room.
“Kid, if you keep doing that you’re gonna make a hole in here.” Eda sat on the cough with King curled up in her lap. She had watched Luz do this for the past half hour, all the while talking about outfits, something about mice, dates and something in Spanish that Eda couldn’t understand but judging by the way Luz swooned as she talked it had to have something to do with her Luz’s upcoming date.
Luz stopped in the middle of the room, “I’m sorry. I really like her, and I’ve never been on a date in my life, I don’t know how to act, what if she doesn’t like what I’m wearing, am I trying too hard, should I offer to hold her hand?”
“Whoa, slow down there. First, you’re way over thinking this. Its just the first date, the most important thing is to have fun and not get arrested.” Eda nodded like she was congratulating herself on the advice.
“Arrested? Why would I be arrested?”
“Well it seemed to be a pattern on my dates. But that might just be me. In any case, just have fun with Little Blight. You like her right?”
Luz nodded rapidly.
“And she likes you?”
Luz nodded again.
“Well then there you go. Go out, have fun, don’t do anything stupid and uh... what was the other thing?. Oh and it also said to give the talk about the birds and the bees.” Eda shrugged, not sure what else she was supposed to say.
Luz’s face grew hot. The young witch shook her head, “Eda! My mom already told me about-”
Eda interrupted before Luz could finish her sentence, “There are a lot of flesh eating bird here so I would recommend not provoking them or just avoiding them all together unless you want some heart-pounding adrenaline moments on your dates. Then you have the firebees but they won’t go after you unless you go into their territory. The honey is delicious though but make sure to have lots of spells on you if you wanna get it.”
“Uh... what are you talking about?” Luz cocked her head to the side, squinting at her mentor, processing what she was hearing.
“The birds and the bees. I read that parental figures are supposed to talk about that when their kids start puberty, or dating.”
“I... Sure...” Luz breathed a sigh of relief, she did not need to hear the talk all over again, and she had a feeling Eda would go out of her way to make it extra embarrassing, “Well tell me about that later, I gotta go now, bye!” She bolted out of there before Eda could stop her.
Luz ran trough the woods, trying not to mess up her outfit. It wasn’t anything special or too fancy, she just threw on a dark blue suit jacket over a white shirt and she was still wearing her new diamond patterned pants.
She got to the Grom Tree where Amity was already waiting for her. Luz’s breath hitched when she saw Amity in the dress.
How is she co cute?! No, wait, calm down Noceda, just be cool about this.
Luz took a deep breath before walking towards Amity, the first few steps a bit hesitant then she steeled herself.
“Amity, hey!” Luz waived at her as she approached.
“Luz! Uh, hey.” Amity waived back, a bit bashfully before disappearing behind the Tree. Luz ran up to the Tree and peaked around it. There Amity sat on a blanket and there was a basket of food next to her. “Sorry if this is too much. I didn’t know if you already ate, or what exactly you could eat so I brought a bit of everything.” Amity gestured to the basket in front of her.
“Oh! Thank you, that’s very nice.” Luz blushed, stepping closer to the lavender haired witch. She sat down next to her, but not too close.
They smiled at each other, but the moment they looked into each others eyes their faces grew hot.
“Uh... you look nice.” Amity’s voice was a bit high pitched, but Luz didn’t seem to mind, in fact she grinned, eyes shimmering in the moonlight.
“Strange but nice right?”
Amity laughed. Not the nervous or awkward laugh, like they’ve been doing for the past few days, but the wholehearted laugh that always managed to make Luz’s heart skip a bit or two.
“Yeah. That’s right.” Amity looked at the night sky above them, “Luz I... I’m sorry for before. I really like you and I know I made things awkward and I really hope we can get back to how things were because I don’t want to keep being awkward around you but I can’t help myself and...” Amity was cut off before she could spiral further.
“No!” Luz cringed at the high tone of her voice, she coughed trying to regain composure, “I mean no, you don’t have to feel sorry. I liked the kiss and I like you, I like spending time with you. But Amity I don’t want things to go back to the way they were before.”
“Oh.” Amity looked down at the ground, her eyes sad and Luz thought she was about to cry.
And she was. Did she misread the whole thing. Luz said she liked her but was it just as a friend. How could they still hang out now? Then out of nowhere she felt warmth against her cheek. Her voice caught in her throat and all she could manage was a gasp.
Luz kissed her. Like Amity did to her a few days ago. Luz pulled back, her face covered in a deep blush. Amity just stared at her wide eyed and stunned.
“I really, really like you Amity. I hope that got across. I’ve never done this before and I hope I don’t mess this up... what ever this is.” Luz looked away rubbing her arm.
She likes me! Is this real? Is this really happening? Amity reached up, placing her hand over the spot Luz kissed. It felt just a little bit warmer than the rest of her face. She had to be brave, if not now then when was she gonna get another chance.
Amity threw her arms around Luz and pulled her into a hug. Luz was surprised for a moment, but she quickly returned the embrace.
“I really, really like you too. And I’ve never felt these feelings before, I don’t wanna mess this up either, but Luz... could we... would you...”
“Go on a date with me?” Luz spoke softly.
Amity pulled away blushing, eyes wide and shimmering, “Yes.” She whispered back.
“Yes, that’s what you wanted to ask or yes you’ll go on a date with me?” Again there was that laugh that Luz loved so much.
“Yes to both.” Amity moved a lock of her hair behind her ear, she still wasn’t completely used to the change.
“Oh good.” Luz let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding, “Wait... is this a date?”
“Uh... Well... I hoped it was.”
“I hoped so too.” Luz took Amity’s hand in her own, “But next time I wanna be on the same page.”
“I think...” Amity intertwined her fingers with Luz’s, “we’re on the same page.”
As they sat back down they could still feel the nervousness, the fear of the new and the unknown, but as Luz looked into Amity’s eyes, when she looked at her the way she did, Luz felt like they can do this together. So what if they were a nervous mess, so what if they could barely look at each other without blushing, so what if this was the first time they dated anyone? They’ll figure stuff out together, and that all they hoped for.
