Jocelyn Knows

Work Text:

Jocelyn was the last person in Runway Magazine who finally figured out what actually happened inside her workplace every single day she worked with other colleagues. Jocelyn never arrived late. She rarely arrived at the last minute before 8 A.M. but somehow that didn’t mean the woman would actually notice something wrong outside Miranda Priestly’s office at all until her eyes finally met a curious gaze from Miranda’s new second assistant while looking at Emily Charlton, Miranda’s first assistant.

“You must be Miranda’s new assistant.” Jocelyn smiled as she stepped towards the desk and lifted her hand towards the brunette. “I’m Jocelyn. Very nice to meet you. I work here at the art department.”

Andrea Sachs, Miranda’s new assistant who dressed in a Cerulean sweater with black skirt, black stocking and black heels, snapped her glance from Miranda’s office doors towards Jocelyn’s genuine smile with widened brown doe eyes as she reciprocated their handshakes. “I’m Andy… Andrea Sachs.” Andrea replied with an obvious sign of nervousness on her face. “But please, just call me Andy.”

Jocelyn nodded. She couldn’t help but slightly frown after Andrea bit her own lips. “Are you alright?”

“Oh, nothing! No, no. Nothing at all.” Andrea meekly smiled back. “It’s just… I don’t know exactly what I should do after this call. He said he’s from Dolce and something. I can’t even get the name right…”

“Too overwhelmed. Huh?” Emily rolled her eyes as she finally pulled Jocelyn out of Andrea’s sights. They kept watching the new assistant working at her desk while walking towards the art department. “Miranda just scolded her this morning, Josie. That girl was completely shocked after Miranda said to her this morning that her coffee’s too cold.” Emily laughed. “Oh my God! You’ve got to see her face!”

“Well, that’s oh so typical.” Jocelyn rolled her eyes with a smile on her face. “It’s her first day, right?”

Emily rolled her eyes once again. “I don’t know what they’re thinking. She really had no idea of what’s going on in Runway and fashion industry at all, Josie. Call me crazy if you’d like to, dear. But this girl? She’s totally insane! For all the love of God and Runway Magazine, please don’t ever let this girl ruin my goddamn Paris Fashion Week this year! I can’t stand if she completely ruins my chance for this!”

Jocelyn silently swallowed after saw Emily huffed. They eventually parted their ways as Emily headed into Runway’s beauty department with a giant frown on her face as Jocelyn was about to pull the art department’s door. Even though both of her hands still remained at the handle, Jocelyn couldn’t help but wonder what would happen next if today’s run through for Runway’s latest issue failed again.

As Jocelyn’s eyes kept watching at Andrea’s reaction towards Miranda’s comment on those belts she brought for their latest run though inside Miranda’s office in 2 hours later, the woman finally realized how the new second assistant named Andrea Sachs was completely as doomed as each and every Miranda’s ex-assistants after the brunette who simply dressed in a complete disaster like Emily said earlier towards her and Serena while they were heading towards cafeteria together at noon, suddenly laughed out of nowhere while they were having a serious discussion on their work and those belts.

Oh, dear. This is so much worse than Cinderella’s encounter with an evil stepmother and her children!

“Something funny?” Miranda asked in all of a sudden as she finally realized who was laughing at her.

Andrea suddenly stopped laughing. “Oh! No, no. Nothing's…” She shook her head. “You know, it's just that both those belts look exactly the same to me. You know, I'm still learning about this stuff and…”

“This stuff?”

Jocelyn couldn’t help but have a quick glimpse at Nigel who could only shake his head in return while they kept watching Miranda pacing inside her dragon’s lair as Andrea became pale in all of a sudden.

“I see.” Miranda nodded despite the fact she was frowning while looking at Andrea at the same time. “You think this has nothing to do with you at all. You go to your closet and you select. Well, I don't know… That lumpy blue sweater, for instance. Because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that sweater is not just blue. It's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then, I think it was Yves Saint Laurent. Wasn't it? Who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here.”

Dead Silence. No one in this room ever dared to say something towards the rest of their Runway team after suddenly realized Miranda Priestly just snarled her new assistant on the first day of her work.

“And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores. And then it trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner. And then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin...”

Jocelyn quickly glanced down at the floor as Andrea swallowed while looking back at Miranda’s face.

“However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs. And it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're still wearing a sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.”

After the run through was finally over, Emily couldn’t help but exchange a glance and her known smirk towards Jocelyn who could only shrug in return as they noticed how pale Andrea suddenly sat down at her desk. “Loser.” Emily inaudibly muttered as she rolled her eyes before headed back to work.

Jocelyn glimpsed at Andrea’s reaction for the last time before finally headed back to her department.

“Good morning!” Andrea greeted Jocelyn as they met at the corridor in day 4. “How’s your weekend?”

It was totally hectic week at Runway Magazine for Andrea as Miranda started giving her impossible tasks and errands in each and every day at work while Jocelyn could only watched the entire situation and tried to help Andrea as much as possible without letting Emily or Miranda become suspicious.

“Is there some reason that my coffee isn't here?” Miranda softly hissed. “Has she died or something?”

Andrea heaved another sigh as she stood up from the desk and waved goodbye to Jocelyn who could only shake her head while turning her head back towards Emily’s desk after heard a roar of fake giggle.

The next morning, Andrea decided to ask Jocelyn an important question after they met each other in day 5. “Hey, Jocelyn.” Andrea whispered. “Why did she keep throwing those coffee I bought for her?”

Jocelyn didn’t reply her question in time as Miranda suddenly summoned Andrea into her office first.

“Miranda loves hot, sizzling coffee.” Jocelyn whispered back to Andrea as they walked past in day 6.

“Okay.” Andrea replied while heading into Miranda’s office without looking back at Jocelyn. “Thanks.”

“Really hot one.” Jocelyn mouthed her words as she walked away from Miranda’s sights. “Oh, dear.”

Andrea rolled her eyes in cheeky manner as she carefully placed the coffee tray on Miranda’s desk. Unfortunately, as Miranda finally sipped her no-foam skimmed latte with an extra shot from the tray, the editor-in-chief glanced up to meet Andrea’s eyes before gently threw a coffee mug into the bin.

With a soft yet loud thump inside the bin beside Miranda’s desk, Andrea couldn’t help but wince internally as she suddenly frowned and returned her glare towards her smirking boss at the same time.

Day 7: “I don’t see my lunch here. Are my eggs here? Where are my eggs?”

Andrea’s brown eyes suddenly widened as Miranda furiously threw her coat and handbag on the desk. She stood up from her desk, rushed into an elevator, bought a dozen of eggs from the local store after Jocelyn messaged her a location before headed back to the Elias-Clark building with her fastest pace.

Day 9: “Get me Isaac.”

“Okay.” Andrea nodded with a smile as Miranda’s fluffy pink scarf was thrown directly into her face.

Day 12: “Pick up the polaroid from the lingerie and gown shoot.”

“Oh, sorry! I didn’t to pry…” Andrea muttered as her eyes instantly met some of model’s gazes. “Shit.”

Andrea blinked her eyes several times while walking back and forth in the crowded studio with several models dressing only in their lingerie as Serena could only exchange a brief chuckle with her colleagues in a total amusement while Jocelyn couldn’t help but smile and shake her head at the same time.

Day 15: “Have the brakes checked on my car yet?”

“Holy shit!” Andrea instantly stomped on the brake as Miranda’s car almost got hit before her eyes.

Day 18: “Get us a reservation for dinner tonight at that place that got the excellent review.”

Andrea inaudibly swallowed after Miranda suddenly threw all of her things on her desk in a single hit.

Day 24: “Pick up my dress at Gabbana and my shoes at Blahnik, and then go get Patricia.”

“Who’s that?” Andrea slowly turned to ask Jocelyn in a whisper as Jocelyn’s eyes suddenly widened.

Andrea eventually forgot her earlier question on Patricia’s physical appearance as both of her hands were now tied on the leech of St. Bernard while carrying all shopping bags for Miranda. “Good girl!”

Day 26: “Get me that little table and a chair that I liked at that store on Madison.”

Andrea couldn’t help but sigh as her brown eyes noticed Emily’s chuckle and soft glare towards her.

Day 35:  “The girls need new surfboards or boogie boards or something for our spring break.”

Andrea was almost reaching the building when Emily’s latest call interrupted her in all of sudden.

“The twins also need flip-flops.”

“For Goodness’s sake…” Andrea muttered to her colleague through the phone as she turned back with the surfboards and instantly hit several people behind her. “Oh my God! Oh, no! Sorry! I’m so sorry!”

Day 37: “Where’s that piece of paper I had in my hand yesterday morning?”

“The paper?” Andrea frowned at Miranda’s back while fumbling into the stack of papers on her desk.

Day 41: “There you are, Emily. How many times do I have to scream your name?”

“Actually, it's Andy.” Andrea interrupted. “My name’s Andy. Andrea, but everybody calls me Andy.”

Silence. Miranda didn’t say anything towards her remark at all. “I need fifteen shirts from Calvin Klein.”

“What kind of shirts do you…?”

“Please bore someone else with your questions.” Miranda flicked her hand to the door. “That’s all.”

Andrea could only grunted at herself and Miranda’s back as she started running back and forth every single time in each and every single day after her superior boss gave a rapid fires of all those tasks in the most impossible and quickest way for her to reach every possible chance she could make in time.

Day 45: “My flight has been canceled. It's some absurd weather problem. I need to get home tonight. The twins have a recital tomorrow morning at school.”

Andrea hurriedly headed out from the restaurant after had a fight with her boyfriend. She ran across the street and headed towards the cab driver while talking to Miranda on the phone once again. “Miranda, Hi! It’s Andy. I'm trying to get you a flight, but no one is flying out because of the weather.”

“Oh, please. It's just… I don't know… Drizzling.”

Andrea suddenly flinched after heard a thunderclap through the line. “Please, Miranda. I’m trying…”

“Call Donatella. Get her jet. Call everyone. This is your responsibility. This is your job. Get me home!”

“Shit.” Andrea cried and shut her eyes as Miranda hung up. “Oh my God! She’s going to murder me!”

Day 46:

The next morning was totally disastrous for both Andrea and Miranda as they were in the same room.

“Well, the girls' recital was absolutely wonderful.” Miranda finally said to Andrea as their eyes met. “They played Rachmaninoff. Everyone loved it. Everyone except me. Because sadly, I was not there.”

Andrea blinked her eyes twice while trying to remain calm as she started feeling intimidated again. “Miranda, I…” She heaved a long sigh in distress as she eventually replied to her boss. “I'm so sorry.”

An awkward yet deadly pause suddenly erupted as Miranda’s piercing blue eyes kept watching something outside the windows while standing next to her chair. “Do you even know why I hired you?”

Andrea could only shake her head as her brown eyes kept watching at Miranda in a total confusion.

“I always hire the same girl. Stylish. Slender. And of course… Worships the magazine.” Miranda sighed. “But so often, they turn out to be… I don't know disappointing and, well... stupid. So you, with that impressive resume and your big speech about your so-called work ethic. I really thought you would be different. I even said to myself, ‘Go ahead. Take a chance. Hire the smart, fat girl.’”

“I…” Andrea glanced up at the ceiling as she was about to break down in front of Miranda. “I…”

“I had hope that my God… I live on it.” Miranda interrupted as she finally sat down on her chair again. “Anyway, you ended up disappointing me more than… Well, more than any of the other silly girls.”

“I…” Andrea sighed as she glanced down to look at Miranda. “I really did everything I could think of.”

“That’s all.”

After heard a sudden dismissal from Miranda who remained cold towards her assistant’s apology, Andrea eventually turned her back towards her boss and headed back towards the outer office without glancing at Emily who suddenly became shocked after realized Andrea was now heading out from the outer office without her permission. “Excuse me! Where do you think you're going?”

As Jocelyn walked past Andrea who quickly shed her tears without saying anything back towards her, the woman slowly turned to look at Miranda inside the office as the editor-in-chief was now pursing her lips with a brief pensive look on her face before spun her gaze back towards the windows again.

This latest incident between two women was totally enough for Jocelyn who suddenly headed back into her department after realized Andrea might have another serious conversation with Nigel again.

As Andrea eventually arrived into the art department’s office, she walked up towards Nigel who slowly stood up from his chair as his gaze noticed those tears on her face. “So?” Nigel suddenly frowned.

“She hates me, Nigel.” Andrea wiped her tears as she replied to him. “She really hates me.”

“And that's my problem because…” Nigel lifted his eyebrows. “Oh, wait. No, it's not my problem.”

Andrea heaved a long sigh of frustration as she walked towards Nigel and looked down at his work. “Nigel, I seriously don't know what else I can do. You know why? Because if I really do something right, it's unacknowledged. She doesn't even say thank you. But if I do something wrong, she is vicious…”

“So quit.”

“What?” Andrea snapped her glance towards Nigel’s face in disbelief. “What did you just say to me?”

Nigel heaved a silent sigh while trying to focus on his work again. “Well, just quit.”

“Andy, I can get another girl to take your job in five minutes. You know, the one who really wants it.”

Andrea winced after heard what he said. “No, I don't want to quit. That's not fair, Nigel. But very well, you know, I'm just saying that I would just like a little credit. For the fact that I'm killing myself trying.”

“Andy, be serious.” Nigel glanced up at his colleague. “You are not even trying. You are just whining.”

Andrea heaved another sigh as Jocelyn finally arrived into the room and looked at them in concern.

“Come on, Andy. What is it that you want me to say to you, huh? Do you want me to say, ‘Poor you. Miranda's picking on you. Poor you. Poor Andy’… Hmm? Wake up now, Six. She's just doing her job.”

“I totally agree on what Nigel said, Andy.” Jocelyn said as Andrea shook her head in disbelief again.

“Don't you know that you are now working at the place that published some of the greatest artists of the century? Halston, Lagerfeld, de la Renta? Hmm? And what they did, what they created was greater than art because you totally live your life in it.”

Andrea could only heave another sigh as Jocelyn sat down and handed some photos towards Nigel.

“Well, not you, obviously, but some people.” Nigel continued. “You think this is just a magazine, hmm? This is not just a magazine. This is a shining beacon of hope for… Oh, I don't know. Let's say a young boy growing up in Rhode Island with six brothers, pretending to go to soccer practice when he was really going to sewing class and reading Runway under the covers at night with a flashlight. Darling, you really have no idea how many legends have walked these halls. And what's worse, you don't care. Because this place, where so many people would die to work you only deign to work. And you want to know why she doesn't kiss you on the forehead and give you a gold star on your homework at the end of the day.” Nigel smirked as he tapped his pen on Andrea’s forehead. “Wake up, sweetheart.”

Andrea softly chuckled and wiped her tears away as she finally nodded. “Okay. So I'm screwing it up.”

Nigel hummed while Jocelyn could only shrug with a soft smile on her face as they exchanged a glance.

“Anyway, I don't want to…” Andrea sighed again. “God, I just wish that I knew what I could do to…”

As Andrea slowly grinned at both Nigel and Jocelyn, they couldn’t help but turned to look at each other in a brief surprise before looked at Andrea in unison as the assistant playfully winked at them in return.

Jocelyn heaved a sigh after sat down on the couch. “Dear God, please tell me this is gonna work…”

“Hey, Josie.” Marc suddenly turned to look at Jocelyn in a total confusion. “Are you talking to me?”

Jocelyn turned to look at Marc in surprise before shook her head and quickly turned away from him.

“Here we go!” Nigel finally said with a wide grin as he stepped out from the department. “Ta-da!”

Jocelyn’s eyes slowly widened after saw Andrea gracefully coming out from the beauty department with Nigel who couldn’t help but give a broad smile to his colleagues in return. “Oh my God, Andy!”

“I should have listened to your advice.” Andrea said to Nigel as Jocelyn helped her checking overalls.

“Better late than never, dear.” Jocelyn smirked while watching Andrea adjusting her bangs. “Wow!”

Andrea pensively smiled. “I thought Miranda hired me because she does knows what I really look like.”

“Really?” Nigel lifted his eyebrows while exchanging a glance with Jocelyn. “I don’t think she knows.”

“But she will. Trust me.” Jocelyn winked at Andrea as Nigel led them out from the dressing room.

“Honestly, Six.” Nigel sighed as he adjusted Andrea’s new long black coat for the last time. “I still don’t really know why Miranda picked you as her assistant. But I don’t think it matters to me anymore.”

“Yeah.” Jocelyn nodded in a total agreement. “I’m sure you’re going to be more than alright, Andy.”

“Thanks, Josie.” Andrea finally said as they exchanged another glance again. “I’m so grateful, Nigel.”

“My pleasure.” Nigel replied to her as Andrea waved towards them and walked away from their sights.

“Do you think Miranda will finally notice how beautiful she is?” Jocelyn asked Nigel in a whisper.

“Come on, Josie. What a silly question.” Nigel couldn’t help but roll his eyes. “Of course, she will.”

“God, I can’t wait to see how Emily and Serena will react to our creation. Hope they won’t be mad.”

“Well?” Nigel shrugged as he turned to grin at Jocelyn. “Serena might not be that totally mad.”

Emily was still checking Miranda’s re-schedule and Nigel’s project as Serena arrived at her desk. “So?”

Emily simply nodded towards her friend while her green eyes were still fixing on the computer screen.

“Is everything alright, Em?”

Emily grinned and shrugged at the same time. “Not really for now, but I might do feel better as soon as Miranda arrived here and finally found nothing on her desk like yesterday morning.”

“Yesterday morning?” Serena lifted her eyebrows in curiosity. “Oh, are we now talking about Andy?”

Emily silently exchanged a known glance with Serena before cheekily nodded as they both eventually understood who and what they were referring to each other in this moment. “I don’t understand why Miranda hired her. I mean, that girl doesn’t even get those things right for Miranda on time, really.”

“Me neither. She doesn’t even know those lipsticks and contours in our beauty department. You know, the other day thatwe were in the beauty department. She held up the Shu Uemura eyelash curler and said, ‘What is this?’” Serena suddenly laughed and clapped her hands at the same time.

“I heard Paul said he saw she tripped on the road and almost got herself crashed by a car. Pathetic.”

“Poor little thing…”

Emily and Serena still continued laughing while reading emails on Emily’s computer screen together. “You know what? I just knew from the moment I saw her, she was going to be a complete and utter…”

Emily’s green eyes suddenly widened into a huge astonishment as Andrea gracefully walked back into their outer office with an absolute blackness on her newly entire presence. Her coat, her dress, her stocking and her Chanel boots gave everyone a strong vibes of power and beauty from the first glance. “Bloody Almighty…” Emily was totally as speechless as Serena was also in a total shock. “What the…?”

Andrea grinned from ear to ear as she turned to pick up the ringing phone from her own desk. “Yes. Miranda Priestly’s office. I’m sorry she’s not available at the moment. But you can leave the words…”

“Are those…?” Emily stammered in a total surprise after Andrea hung up. “Are you wearing the…?”

“The Chanel boots? Yeah, I am.” Andrea replied as she turned back to work without glancing at Emily.

“You look good.”

Emily grunted after noticed how fast her colleague completely changed her attitude towards Andrea.

“What?” Serena whispered back to Emily. “I really mean it! She’s really beautiful! She looks good!”

“Shut up, Serena!”

Andrea bit her lips to suppress her sudden chuckle towards them as she eventually completed some of her tasks on the computer screen before went out to get an afternoon coffee for Miranda as usual.

After few days went by with several new looks on Andrea’s appearance in each and every day at work, Jocelyn eventually noticed something changed between Miranda and Andrea in one early morning after the woman walked past Miranda’s outer office when Miranda suddenly stopped her pace.

As Miranda’s piercing blue eyes finally caught a glimpse of Andrea who was constantly adjusting those magazines and documents inside her boss’s office, it was how Jocelyn eventually noticed a complete change of dynamic relationship between two women after the brunette assistant greeted her boss with a genuine broad smile on her face as they eventually walked past each other.

Jocelyn couldn’t help but smirk while heading back to the art department in that morning after noticed how subtle Miranda stole a quick yet yearning glance at Andrea as they eventually walked past each other while Miranda’s assistant couldn’t help but grin behind her boss after realized she just nailed it.

“For God’s sake, Josie! I can’t believe you are officially the fairy godmother to that girl from Ohio.”

“Her name’s Andy, Emily.” Serena suddenly interrupted her friend. “And please, for the love of God and Runway. Can’t you guys just calm yourself down a bit? It’s the last episode of my favorite show.”

Nigel let out a soft chuckle while sipping his favorite wine from the bottle. Jocelyn rolled her eyes and mumbled something to Emily who could only shrug at her in return. “Sharing an elevator ride with Miranda must be a very good sign for her.” Jocelyn said to Nigel who nodded in a total agreement.

“I really have no idea why Miranda even decided to let her bring the Book at her townhouse tonight.”

“Six did an impressive job so far.” Nigel replied to Emily. “Even though Miranda wasn’t quite impressed with James Holt’s work today, but she’s quite impressed on what Six fulfilled her errands these days.”

Jocelyn nodded to Nigel as she turned to look at her phone on the coffee table. As her eyes noticed a new message on the screen, she instantly gasped after finished reading within few seconds. “Oh, no.”

“What’s wrong?” Nigel turned to ask Jocelyn after noticed how she turned pale in all of a sudden.

Jocelyn heaved a sigh as she was about to stand up from the couch. “Our dear child’s doomed again.”

“See? I told you.” Emily huffed at both Jocelyn and Nigel before rubbed her temples. “Bloody hell…”

“What happened?” Serena asked without taking her eyes off of her favorite TV show. “Is she alright?”

“She said Miranda caught her at the staircase inside the house while delivering the Book tonight.”

“Good lord.” Emily suddenly grunted. “I’m gonna kill her before my head’s gonna be finally chopped!”

“Put yourself together, Emily. Everything’s gonna be fine.” Nigel smiled back at both Emily and Serena. “Trust me, ladies. I’m sure Cinderella will survive if our stepmother learns to be brave and kind to her.”

“And live together…” Jocelyn added with a hint of smile on her face. “Happily ever after…”

As Nigel, Serena and Emily turned to look at Jocelyn in unison, Jocelyn quickly shift her gaze to the TV.

As soon as Andrea sneakily walked into the main working space of Runway in the next morning after making her first biggest incident at Miranda Priestly’s townhouse last night, Emily suddenly gripped on Andrea’s arm after noticed how her brunette colleague almost reached towards her own desk.

“No, no, no.” Emily shushed as she hurriedly pulled her colleague into the kitchenette. “Not today.”

“Okay.” Andrea sighed after they were at the kitchenette. “It really wasn't that big a deal. I promise.”

Jocelyn swallowed and hurriedly hid nearby the wall as she noticed Emily was now in a complete fury.

“Are you fucking kidding me, Andrea?!” Emily hissed. “It’s now a totally big deal!”

“The twins said ‘Hello!’ to me last night!” Andrea meekly smiled. “So, I said… ‘Hello!’ back.”

“Oh my God!” Emily shut her eyes tightly and shook her head in a total disbelief. “Bloody hell, Andrea.”

“Then I went up the stairs to give her the Book and…”

“You went upstairs.” Emily muttered to herself as she finally opened her eyes to glare at her colleague. “You went upstairs! Why don’t you just climb into bed with her and asked her for a bedtime story?”

Andrea swallowed. She nodded as her mind started wandering off. “I made a mistake, Em. I know.”

Andrea was about to head back towards her desk when Emily suddenly pulled Andrea’s arm again. “Andrea, you don’t understand.” Emily huffed. “If you get fired, that might jeopardize Paris for me.”

“Emily, please. I didn’t mean to…”

“And if that happens, I’ll search every Blimpie's in the tristate area until I track you down.”

Andrea’s brown doe eyes suddenly widened in a complete shock. “Wait, is she gonna fire me?!”

Emily shrugged and shook her head as she replied. “I don’t know. You’re doomed. She’s not happy.”

Andrea swallowed again. A brief pause erupted between them before Miranda called her. “Andrea?”

Emily snapped her fingers towards the doorway which led towards the dragon’s lair, Miranda’s office.

As soon as Andrea put down her purse, she hurriedly went into her boss’s office with a pale expression.

Andrea’s brown eyes still widened as Miranda’s cold gaze went up from those documents on her desk to face her assistant’s presence with a full glance. “Good morning, Miranda.” Andrea politely greeted her boss with a broad smile on her pale face. Unfortunately, as soon as Andrea noticed Miranda’s unreadable glare, she suddenly became anxious. “About last night, I…”

“I need a new Harry Potter book for the twins.”

Andrea eventually heaved a sigh after heard what Miranda recently wanted and realized she wasn’t going to be fired just like Emily had predicted earlier. “Okay. I'll go down to Barnes & Noble right now.”

Miranda suddenly glanced up from her desk to Andrea’s face again after noticed her second assistant was ready to leave without a clear understanding on her words. “Did you fall down and smack your little head on the pavement?” Miranda asked after removed her reading glasses and tossed her pen to the other side of her desk.

Andrea was completely stunned. “Not that I can recall.” She finally replied to Miranda.

“We have all the published Harry Potter books. The twins want to know what happens next.”

Andrea’s heart just skipped an original beat for the moment as her mind started wandering off again. “You want the unpublished manuscript?” Andrea nervously asked as soon as she finally figured out.

“We know everyone in publishing.” Miranda smirked. “It shouldn't be a problem, should it?”

Andrea was about to say something in return when her brown eyes sensed Miranda’s sudden bitterness and disappointment through those blue eyes which still remained ruthless towards her.

“And you can do anything, right?”

Andrea swallowed as her brown eyes met Miranda’s gaze and exchanged their brief glances in silence.

Jocelyn was still standing and waiting to meet Andrea at the corner of Miranda’s outer office when she finally noticed how Andrea smiled briefly before turned and walked away from Miranda’s sights.

Miranda coughed and quickly turned her back towards her second assistant as soon as her latest phone call suddenly erupted with a familiar name and number on the screen. She couldn’t help but smile as she picked it up. “Yes, Bobbseys. I know, baby. Mommy's working very hard to get it for you.”

Jocelyn couldn’t help but roll her eyes in silence while watching Andrea fumbling some documents and things inside her desk before gathered everything she needed and stood up from the desk when Miranda headed out from her office and Emily hurried up from her desk to help her putting on a coat.

“My girls are leaving on the train for their grandmother's at four.” Miranda turned to smirk at Andrea. “So, the book better be here no later than three.”

“Of course.” Andrea suddenly replied.

“And I would like my steak here in fifteen minutes.”

“No problem!” Andrea froze a smile on her face while watching Miranda heading towards the elevator until her boss was completely out of her sights. She eventually heaved a sigh in distress after turned to meet Emily and saw her redhead colleague was now laughing at her. “That’s not funny at all, Em.”

Emily simply shrugged to Andrea in return as she finally sat down on her chair again.

“I have four hours to get the impossible manuscript.” Andrea mumbled to herself as she sat down and checked the mails again. “Smith & Wollensky's doesn't open until eleven-thirty. How am I gonna get the steak?” She frowned before heaved another sigh. “I’ll be back in fifteen minutes. Wish me luck!”

“No, shan’t.”

Jocelyn couldn’t help but roll her eyes in boredom after heard what Emily just replied to her colleague.

“What’s exactly the point of trying to help her, Josie? You make me feel like I’m not even your friend.”

Jocelyn bit her lips in nervousness as her eyes finally met Emily’s glare while they were having dinner with Serena and Nigel at Serena’s apartment later that night. Despite the fact the woman did give her mutual friend’s contact who did the cover art and happened to have the manuscript at the same time without letting Miranda know how her assistant completed this impossible task at day, Jocelyn didn’t want to give Emily much further detail on why she decided to save Andrea’s career from last night’s failure by helping her complete this impossible task instead.

“Emily, dear.” Nigel calmly motioned Emily to sit down before turned to look at Jocelyn in concern. “Only this time, Josie. If I heard you tried to save Andy like this time again, I must report everything you did to Miranda and you know what’s going to happen to Andy after Miranda knew all about this…”

“I don’t want Andrea to be fired, Nigel.” Jocelyn interrupted. “I just want to help her and Miranda…”

“Wait, are you in love with Andy?” Serena suddenly asked and gaped at Jocelyn in a total surprise.

“Bloody mighty hell, Josie!” Emily shrieked as her eyes suddenly widened. “You’re in love with her?!”

Jocelyn rolled her eyes in a total disbelief as she finally said to her friends. “I’m not in love with either Andy or Miranda, okay?!” Jocelyn huffed before slumped down on the couch and glanced up after noticed another glare from Emily. “I know they’re in love with each other and I’m trying to help them.”

“Huh.” Emily rolled her eyes as she sat beside Jocelyn. “And what are you right now? A matchmaker?”

Jocelyn shrugged. “I don’t know, maybe. My friends always told me I’m very great at matchmaking.”

Emily gaped in shock while Serena could only chuckle at her sights as Nigel simply nodded back at her.

“Andy just broke up with her boyfriend, you know. I knew it from the first moment I saw him that he’s not her Prince Charming at all. And Miranda… well, Mr. Tomlinson is quite… I don’t know, he doesn’t even care of her children.” Jocelyn rolled her eyes. “Why does everyone have to be oh so complicated when it comes to talk about love? I really don’t get it, guys. Love is supposed to be simple, isn’t it?”

Emily bit her lips and folded her arms while looking at Jocelyn critically. “Did you realize that what you did today might cost me a chance to be in Paris Fashion Week? What if Miranda gave her a chance instead of me who deserved to be there in the very first place? What the hell would you do, Josie?”

Jocelyn swallowed her guilt. She didn’t know how to reply the question without hurting Emily after saw her stood up and headed towards the door without saying goodbyes to the rest of them as usual.

Everything in Jocelyn’s life slowly turned upside-down as time went by. Emily never spoke to her again. Despite Andrea’s best effort to bring them back together as friends with a help from Nigel and Serena, Jocelyn couldn’t help but feel hopeless after realized Emily was now completely torn from the undeniable fact that Miranda was totally impressed at Andrea’s excellent assistance while they were attending at the benefit last night which left Emily become ruthless towards the brunette afterwards.

“Josie.” Andrea said to Jocelyn while having lunch. “Miranda told me last night that I’m going to Paris.”

Jocelyn’s eyes suddenly widened in surprise, hope and shock. “And what did you say to her, Andy?”

Andrea sighed as she glanced down at her plate. “Paris is the most important week of her entire year. She needs the best possible team with her.” Andrea paused while exchanging her glance with Jocelyn.

Jocelyn frowned after realized what Andrea was thinking right now. “You don’t want to go?”

Andrea shook her head. “Emily’s whole life is about Paris. I swear to God, she hasn't eaten in weeks.”

“I know. She would die rather be left alone here, trust me. You haven’t seen the worst version of her.”

Andrea couldn’t help but laugh despite her facial expression was totally pensive. “I don’t want to break her heart, Josie.” She heaved a sigh. “What should I do? I’m feeling so torn between two worst options in my life right now. If I didn’t go to Paris with Miranda, she’ll assume I’m not serious about my future at Runway or any other publication at all. But If I finally chose to go Paris with Miranda and Runway, I’m certainly sure that Emily won’t ever forgive me because of this.”

Jocelyn paused her words. She couldn’t help but nod as she slowly pulled Andrea closer towards her after noticed the brunette was in a verge of crying in front of her again. “Everything’s gonna be okay.”

As Andrea eventually reciprocated her embrace, Jocelyn couldn’t help but gasp in a silent shock after realized Miranda was standing there, in the midst of large crowd pacing outside the big restaurant. She was still standing there, looking at them with those piercing blue eyes which gradually turned into an obvious glare of jealousy, heartbroken and hopeless as her dearest assistant yet somehow silly girl still remained embracing her colleague without realizing her boss was behind those window glasses.

As soon as Jocelyn released Andrea from their embrace and motioned her to look at the window, Andrea’s eyes suddenly widened after realized Miranda was heading back to the Elias-Clark building in a quick pace without looking back at her as the way she always did to her with those longing gazes.

Everything in Jocelyn’s life suddenly turned upside-down after Andrea finally announced to her and Nigel through an email in 3 weeks later that she would not be working here as Miranda’s assistant.

Jocelyn could only gulp and shake her head in a total disbelief as Nigel sighed in a complete distress.

“What should we do now?” Jocelyn turned to ask Nigel after Miranda went into her office without looking back at Andrea’s desk which was now left in a complete emptiness just like her existence.

“Just say a little prayer to every one of us, Jocelyn. That would be totally useful for the rest of today.”

Emily huffed while repeating her mantra and calling Andrea’s number on the phone at the same time. “For God’s sake, Andrea Sachs! Pick it up! It’s really emergency!” She hissed through the phone despite Andrea didn’t pick up her call at all. “I love my job! I love my job! God, this is such a pathetic excuse!”

“Hey, Emily. Can you just calm down a bit? Thanks.” Jocelyn finally turned to Emily after realized they were now alone outside Miranda’s office while waiting to be summoned by the editor-in-chief soon.

“Calm down my ass, Josie!” Emily glared at Jocelyn in a total disbelief as she stood up from her desk. “She’s the one who said to me that she doesn't really care about this stuff! And she doesn't really care about fashion at all! She just wants to be a journalist! What a pile of bollocks!”

“Hey, cut it down!” Jocelyn snapped and rolled her eyes. “At least Andy really speaks from her heart.”

“Face it, Josie. She already sold her soul the day she put on that first pair of Jimmy Choo's. I saw it! What really just kills me about this whole damn thing is those clothes that she’s gonna get if she says yes to her! And she doesn't even deserve them! She eats carbs, for Christ's sake! God, it's so unfair!”

Jocelyn couldn’t help but nod slowly. “Guess she knows something better will come to her after all.”

Emily rolled her eyes after heard what Jocelyn just said. Nevertheless, as they heard Miranda called ‘Jocelyn’ in all of a sudden, the redhead assistant couldn’t help but frown at her friend suspiciously. “Did she change her mind about her?”

Emily rolled her eyes again. “Whatever. It really doesn’t matter for me now. Hurry.” She flicked her hand towards Miranda’s office as Jocelyn’s eyes slowly widened after realized what her friend meant.

As soon as Jocelyn arrived into Miranda’s office, she couldn’t help but swallow hard as Miranda glanced up from those magazines and documents to glare at the woman directly. “Yes, Miranda?”

“I need to see a new draft on that piece you and Nigel are working on it right now.”

Jocelyn confidently handed the draft towards the editor-in-chief and replied with a smile on her face. “We thought it would be better if we decided to keep the femininity of the clothes and belts we…”

Jocelyn swallowed again. “Well, I saw they're showing a lot of florals right now, so I was thinking…”

“Florals?” Miranda glanced up again. “For Spring?” She frowned before smirked. “Groundbreaking.”

Jocelyn swallowed again. This time she couldn’t help but slightly frown at Miranda as she finally said. “I swear to God, Miranda. I didn’t want you to be misunderstood from what you saw on that day…”

“That’s all.”

Jocelyn heaved a sigh. She was about to head out from Miranda’s office with a draft she handed in earlier when her eyes noticed a silent plea from those piercing blue eyes as Miranda was now looking at the second assistant’s desk which was now left behind without any traces from her ex-assistant.

That was when Jocelyn decided to close and lock the office doors at the same time before sat down in front of Miranda’s sights without asking her permission as usual. “She doesn’t mean to hurt you.”

Miranda couldn’t help but roll her eyes as her simple answer. “If you speak to her and she decides to rethink her job as my assistant... then, yes, fetch away. You’re very fetching sometimes, so go fetch.”

“Oh, okay. I…” Jocelyn slowly lifted her eyebrows as she finally understood what Miranda meant. “Well, if you want me to let Emily know and cancel our meeting at four, I think it would be…”

“Don't be ridiculous, Jocelyn.” Miranda shook her head. “Why would we do that?”

Jocelyn heaved a long sigh in a reluctant relief as she replied. “Because the clock is ticking, Miranda.”

As Miranda started pursing her lips, Jocelyn suddenly stood up from the chair. Silence. Miranda didn’t seem to be startled by her employee’s sudden reaction from what she just did which was great for Jocelyn to start pacing around the room without being intimidated by her boss’s presence in the office.

“Once upon a time, there was a young beautiful girl from out of nowhere, looking for a job she wished it would be fulfilled her impossible dream. She was found by a so-called evil stepmother but also her beautiful boss who was working in the best fashion publishing industry and living in the very big townhouse with her two teenaged daughters and their lovely St. Bernard dog. At first, everything seemed to be a perfect story for another fairytale that made the girl end up with her Prince Charming, but no. She didn’t want to be ended up with the prince. In fact, she fell in love with her stepmother who turned out to be her beautiful yet mercurial boss at her workplace. She also adored her daughters and their favorite pet without a doubt. She didn’t even care how many impossible tasks she was given by her boss in every single day because she knew she would always complete every single task just in time before the day ended. But the only thing she did care was her boss. She certainly knew her boss was unable to reach out because that was her boss so she thought she was totally out of her league!”

“You don’t even know how hard it was for Andy to choose between her job and her friend, Miranda! She even sacrificed her position for Emily’s dream even though she knew it would break your heart… as her boss… and… more than her boss, and Emily’s heart as a friend, too. She was so serious that she couldn’t even look at me and Nigel in the eyes for days after you told her you chose her over Emily.”

Miranda heaved a sigh in silent distress and frustration as she stood up from her chair and turned her gaze towards outside the windows. “And what am I then, Jocelyn? The Dragon Lady, career-obsessed. Snow Queen drives away another Mr. Priestly after Stephen just asked me a divorce last night…”

Jocelyn suddenly gaped in a total shock. “I’m… Oh, God. I’m so sorry, Miranda. I really have no idea…”

“I don't really care what anybody writes about me, to be honest.” Miranda bit her lips as she started trembling while looking back at Jocelyn who could only shake her head. “But my girls, It’s just… it's just so unfair to the girls. It's just another disappointment. Another letdown, another father figure.”

Jocelyn sighed. An awkward pause erupted as Miranda quickly wiped her tears and turned to look to the other side of the room. The air still thickened because of a silence between them. Jocelyn knew even though she couldn’t help but walk towards Miranda without letting herself get into more of her boss’s personal space as she finally broke the silence. “She really loves you, Miranda. She always does. She just needs your reassurance. She needs some courage for her to say those words in front of you…”

Miranda couldn’t help but snort out a little laugh in front of Jocelyn. “I don’t need words, Jocelyn.”

Jocelyn couldn’t help but roll her eyes in a playful manner. “Well, why don’t you go fetch her then?”

Miranda shook her head as she suddenly recomposed herself into a dragon lady’s persona once again. “Dragons don’t go fetch, Jocelyn.” A brief pause erupted as Miranda snorted again before gradually smiled at Jocelyn. This time it was truly a real smile. “But I do see a great deal of myself in her, Jocelyn. She can see beyond what people want and what they need. And she can choose everything for herself. Frankly to say in front of you here, but I hope you tell no one about this. Not even Nigel.”

“Trust me, Miranda.” Jocelyn couldn’t help but smile in reassurance. “Your secrets are safe with me.”

Miranda nodded. “From all the assistants I had so far, she was by far, my biggest disappointment.”

Jocelyn couldn’t help but snort in return as Miranda pursed her lips while looking back at her fiercely.

“And if I don't see her again, I must say that I’m a totally freaking idiot.”

Jocelyn eventually smirked at the editor-in-chief’s remark after figured out how to fix this problem.

Miranda couldn’t help but heave another silent sigh while looking towards an apartment building through her sunglasses and the car window. She was sitting at the back seat inside her black Mercedes in the late evening after work which was now under the sudden rainfall after Roy drove into this area.

“Thanks, buddy!”

As Miranda’s piercing blue eyes finally caught a glimpse of Andrea standing in front of the apartment building while talking to a man who dressed in black jackets and dark jeans, the editor-in-chief couldn’t help but bite her lips in nervousness as she finally took off her sunglasses and looked at Andrea who dressed in an old red sweatshirt, blue jeans and white sneakers which were half-covered with mud through her car window again. Even though Miranda couldn’t see the face of that man, she clearly saw a facial expression on the brunette’s face from her car window. The brunette was now chuckling and shaking her head with a smile on her face, just like the way she always saw that smile at Runway.

It made Miranda feel hurt in all of a sudden as she suddenly recalled the day she saw Andrea and Jocelyn in that restaurant while they were having lunch together. Miranda heaved a long sigh again.

As soon as the man finally stepped away and turned to walk towards the other side of the street, Miranda couldn’t help but repeatedly blink her piercing blue eyes after noticed Andrea was now standing there, alone, with a pizza box in her right hand while adjusting her bangs and her ponytail with her left hand as the current weather gradually changed into a sudden yet serene downpour.

“Miss Priestly?” Roy suddenly asked Miranda. “Do you want me to drive you home now or…?”

Miranda replied to him with a sharp glare as she quickly gathered her things before opened the door.

As Miranda gracefully stepped out of her Mercedes which made Roy finally drove away from her sights and Andrea’s neighborhood, the editor-in-chief couldn’t help but lifted her eyebrows in a total surprise to both of herself and Andrea at the same time as the brunette suddenly gasped at her sights.

Another silence erupted as two women became speechless while they were exchanging a warm and yearning glance towards each other until Miranda eventually rolled her eyes towards the rain and flicked her right hand to the sky as she finally broke the silence between them. “By all means, Andrea.” She glanced at Andrea again. “Why don’t you just move at a glacial pace? You know how it thrills me.”

Andrea rushed towards Miranda with a broad smile on her face after noticed a smirk from her ex-boss who couldn’t help but pull her ex-assistant into her arms as they were finally brought back together. After being spun by Miranda with a sudden bliss between them, Andrea couldn’t help but shriek in a total fright after accidentally dropped a pizza box on the pavement. “Oh my God, Miranda! I’m so sorry for everything. I didn’t mean to hurt you and Emily. I thought this would be better for both of…”

As Miranda finally shut her ex-assistant’s babbling with her own lips, Andrea’s brown eyes suddenly widened within seconds as soon as she realized her ex-boss was kissing her first time while standing in the rain together before the brunette finally shut her eyes as she slowly deepened their first kiss.

Miranda sighed in relief as they finally parted their kiss even though she couldn’t help but roll her eyes and smile back at her sights after Andrea hurriedly turned to pick up her pizza box on the pavement. “I’d be so glad, darling.” Miranda smirked at Andrea. “If you let me in before another rainfall begins.”

Andrea couldn’t help but chuckle as they slowly reciprocated their kiss in the rain… once and again.

The End
