Fairground Attraction

Chapter Text

It's the start of the summer holidays. And 17 year old Serena Mckinnie is determined to make the most of her 7 weeks off before she starts university. Serena sat at her dressing table putting a bit of makeup on. She was meeting her friends to go to the fun fair. Sian, one of her friends, never went on the rides; she just saw it as an opportunity to chat up boys. Her other friends Fleur and Louise were quieter. Fleur had autism and had been Serena's and Louise's best friend since they first met at nursery. They were both fiercely protective of Fleur.

"I'm going out Mum." Serena said as she went downstairs and put her jacket on.
"Where are you going?" Adrienne, her Mum said as she stood at the lounge door.
"The fair is in town Mum. I'm meeting Fleur, Sian and Louise there."
"I wish you wouldn't knock around with that Sian."
"Mum she's one of my friends."
"Well I don't like her. She's a bad influence. Plus she's man mad. That girl is gonna end up getting herself in trouble before long if she's not careful. And I don't want her getting you into trouble."
"What are you babbling on about Mum?"
"Babies Serena. I'm talking about babies. Sian is going to end up getting pregnant. And I don't want the same for you."
"Mum relax there's no way that's ever gonna happen to me. I've already told you I'm not interested in boys."
"Make sure it stays that way."
"Don't worry it will." Serena smiled as she kissed her Mum on the cheek.
"Have you got enough money?" "Yes I've got plenty."
"Here take this and get yourself something to eat." Adrienne gave Serena a £20 note.
"Thanks Mum."
"It's for food Serena not cigarettes and booze."
"Yeah. See you later." Serena called out as she walked down the garden path.

"I WON'T MUM." Serena shouted as she walked down the road.
"Leave her be darling." George said as he put his arms around Adrienne's waist.
"I worry about her when she's around Sian. I don't trust that girl."
"Serena isn't a little girl anymore. In a few weeks she'll be 18. A grown woman who after the holidays will be going to university."
"She's still my little girl George. No matter how old she is."
"I know, love." Adrienne turned round and hugged her husband.

Serena met the girls at the off licence.
"About time." Sian said as Serena walked up to them.
"Stop moaning."
"So what are we getting to drink?"
"Not vodka Sian it's rank." Louise said as she got her purse out.
"What about wine? We could always get a couple of bottles of decent wine." Serena said as she gave Fleur some money.
"Look at Miss lardy da." Sian said as she lit up a cigarette. Serena stuck two fingers up at Sian as she went into the shop with Fleur.
"Leave her alone." Louise said as she took a drag of Sian's cigarette.
"Serena knows I'm only joking."
"Here we go ladies. We've got 1 red and 2 white. Who wants what?" Fleur said as she waved the bag about making the bottle clink.
"Don't break them you idiot."
"Don't ever call Fleur an idiot Sian." Serena snapped as she took the bottle of red and passed the bag to Sian.
"I was only joking." "Well your not funny. So shut up." Serena snapped as she put her arm in Fleurs and walked off ahead.

"My God it's rammed." Sian said as she took a swig out of her bottle.
"So what are we going on first?" Louise asked as they stood in the queue to get in drinking their wine.
"Excuse me ladies." A voice said from behind them. When the girls turned around they saw a tall woman. Blonde and very beautiful.
"What's up?"
"There is no alcohol allowed I'm afraid."
"Come on I'm sure you could let us be an exception." Sian said as she walked closer to the blonde.
"Not a chance, either bin it or leave." Serena smiled as the blonde looked at her.
"Just chuck it in the bin Sian, for God's Sake." Serena said as she chucked hers in the bin along with Louise.
"And yours." The blonde said to Fleur.
"My friend's drink is just a bottle of coke. She doesn't drink." Serena said as she walked closer to the blonde. " My friend has autism and doesn't like alcohol. You can try it if you don't believe us."
"I believe you." The blonde smiled at Serena. "Enjoy your evening."
"Thank you." Serena smiled as the girls walked away. Serena couldn't help but turn back around to look at the blonde again.

The blonde watched as Serena and the girls walked round the fair.
"Let's go on this?" Sian said as they stood and watched a ride called the Avalanche.
"Fleur will you be alright on this?" Serena asked as she held onto Fleur's arm.
"I think so. Will you sit beside me?"
"Of course I will."
"And I will sit at the other side of you." Louise said as they joined the queue.
"Oh God it's her from the entrance." Sian groaned as Serena turned her head quickly and looked at the blonde as she went up to the woman who was in charge of the ride.
"Sal you go for a break. I'll take over here."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes go on."
"Thanks Bernie." Serena heard the woman call out as she walked away.
Bernie her name is Bernie Serena smirked to herself as they got nearer to the front of the queue.
"I hope you don't want to search our bags this time." Sian said as they got to the front.
"Sian shut up." Serena said as they walked onto the ride and sat down.
"Are you sure you're going to be alright on this." Fleur nodded.
"Bloody hell Serena she's not a baby."
"I'm warning you Sian."
"Is everything alright? Bernie asked as made sure that everyone was fastened in safely.
"Yes fine thanks."
"If you want me to stop the ride at any time just give me a thumbs up Ok." Bernie said as she stood in front of them.
"Thank you. I'll be alright. I've got my best friend with me." Fleur said as she held Serena's hand tightly.
"She keeps you safe huh?"
"Can we get this ride started sometime today." Sian groaned.
"I'm sorry about her."
"Don't worry I can handle her." Bernie smiled as she walked up to Sian. "One more word out of you and you're out of here." Bernie snapped as she winked as Serena as she walked past her and went into the booth. And started the ride.

Bernie couldn't take her eyes off Serena as her and Fleur laughed as the ride went up in the air.
My God she is so gorgeous Bernie thought to herself. After 5 minutes Bernie stopped the ride. Bernie stepped out of the booth and helped the people off the ride.
"Did you enjoy that?" Bernie asked Fleur.
"Yes thank you." Fleur said as her and Louise walked away.
"Thank you for being so good with Fleur."
"No problem. What's your name?" Bernie asked as Serena went to walk off.
"I'm Bernie."
"I know." Serena smiled as she ran to catch up with the girls. After going on a few more rides Serena and the girls decided to get something to eat.
"How about after this we go to the pub for a bit."
"I'm not allowed in the pub." Fleur said.
"Well you needn't come with us."
"I'll tell you what Sian, why don't you go to the pub on your own. Because I swear to God you are hanging by a very thin thread."
"She's holding us back. I don't even know why we let her hang around with us."
"She's our best friend."
"Well she isn't mine."
"Then I suggest you find someone else to knock around with." Serena said as she stood up. "Come on Fleur."
"No. You stay here, I'll go."
"No you won't. Sian will go. Won't you?"
"What are you choosing her over me?"
"See you around losers." Sian snapped as she stormed off.
"I'm sorry Serena."
"You've got nothing to be sorry for." Serena said.
"Where's the toilet?"
"Just over there."
"Do you want one of us to go with you?"
"No I'll be fine." Fleur said as she walked towards the toilets.

"I don't think we'll be seeing much of Sian from now on." Louise said as they ate their burger.
"Good. I'm not having her speak to Fleur like that. Speaking of Fleur she has been gone a long time."
"Let's go and see if she's alright" Serena and Louise got up off the bench and walked toward the portaloos.
"FLEUR. FLEUR." Serena shouted as she banged on all the doors and opened them.
"She's not here Serena."
"She has to be FLEUR. FLEUR. I shouldn't have let her go off on her own."
"Come on let's go look around." Serena and Louise started looking around the fair.
"Let's ask him if she's seen Fleur."
"You haven't seen our friend have you?"
"What does she look like?"
"She's just a bit shorter than me with red curly hair."
"I think I know who you mean. Come with me." Serena and Louise followed the men across the field to a load of caravans.
"Bernie." The man said as he knocked on the caravan door and opened it as Serena and Louise followed him inside.
"Fleur thank God you're alright. Please don't ever do that again." Serena cried as she went up to Fleur and held her tightly.
"I found her wandering around on her own. She was so scared. I didn't want to leave her. So I brought her back here."
"Thank you so much." Serena smiled as she hugged Bernie for a little longer than necessary.

When Serena finally let go she noticed that Bernie was blushing slightly.
"Would erm. Would you all like a drink?" Bernie stuttered.
"Can I have a cup of tea please?" Fleur asked.
"Course you can. Ladies Tea. Coffee." "Tea will be fine thanks."
"I'll go and put the kettle on."
"Yes sweetheart."
"Sian was right wasn't she. I shouldn't be hanging around with you guys."
"No she wasn't. Me, you and Louise have been friends since we were 4 years old. And we always will be friends. We love you." Serena smiled with tears in her eyes as she held Fleur's hand. "And nothing will ever change that. I promise."
"Serena's right. We are the three musketeers remember." Fleur nodded.
"There you go." Bernie said as she put the drinks on the table.
"Thank you Bernie."
"Your very welcome Fleur."
"So is this your own caravan?" Serena asked as she picked up a cup.
"Yeah I got it a few weeks ago for my 18th birthday."
"That's handy." Serena muttered.
"I mean nice that's nice. It's my 18th soon."
"Serena is going to university after the summer."
"Is she?"
"Yeah. She's going to be a Doctor"
"Well hopefully."
"I'm sure you'll smash it."
"I hope so." Serena smiled as he lr and Bernie just stared at each other.
"So how long is yhe fair here for Bernie?" Louise asked.
"4 weeks then we go to London for 6 weeks."
"That's where Serena is going to university. You might see each other there."
"Drink up trouble. We better get you home."
"I'll give you all a lift home."
"You don't have to do that. We'll be alright." Serena said as she stood up.
"It's no bother. I want to make sure you all get home alright." Bernie grabbed her car keys as they all left the caravan and got into Bernie’s car.

"Where to first?"Bernie said as she got in the car.
"Can we drop Fleur off first? She has to be in for 10.00."
"Sure. Fleur what's the address flower."
"72 Lancaster Road."
"I'll show you where to. Turn left and here and follow the road till you get to the roundabout."
"Ok." Serena couldn't help but look at Bernie’s slender fingers as she tapped them on the steering wheel to the music.
God I would love to have them fingers inside of me Serena thought to her herself as she felt her face suddenly feel very hot.
"Do you mind if I opened this window?"
"No go ahead."
"Thanks." Serena opened the window to cool herself down. "It's this house just here." Serena said a few minutes later.
"Thank you Bernie." Fleur said as she got out of the car.
"Your welcome Fleur."
"I won't be a minute. Come on sweetie." Serena said as she walked Fleur up to the front door. Bernie smiled as she watched Serena and Fleur hug each other.

"Go to the end of the street and turn right." Serena said after they dropped Louise off. I don't want to say goodbye to this girl yet Bernie thought to herself.
"Do you need to be home at a certain time?"
"No I don't."
"I erm. I don't suppose you fancy going for a drink do you?"
"Yes sure there's a nice pub not too far away."
"I don't go to pubs."
"Then where do you want to go for a drink then?"
"Is there a cafe or something around here?"
"Yes there's one just around the corner that's open till late."
"Great. Shall we?"
"Sure why not." Bernie started the car and drove to the cafe.
"What do you want to drink?" Serena said as they sat down at a table.
"I'll get them."
"After what you have done for us tonight. I'll get them."
"I'll have a coffee please."
"Ok." Serena walked up to the counter and ordered. Bernie just stared at Serena as she got the drinks. "There you go." Serena said as she sat down.
"Thank you."
"Can I ask you something without you being offended?"
"Ask me what you want."
"Have you always been with the fair?"
"Yes. I was born into it. It's my parents fair. It's been in my Dad's family for years. He inherited it from my Grandfather."
"So you're gypsies."
"We like to be called travellers."
"Travellers don't have a very good reputation do they."
"Let's get one thing straight. My family has never stolen from or hurt anyone."
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that."
"It's alright."
"Haven't you ever wanted to do something else though?"
"Like what. I left school at 14. I'm not qualified to do anything else. You're very lucky to still be able to go to school."
"I guess I am."
"This is my life from now on. In a few years time I will have to find a husband and I then he will work on the fair while I stay in the caravan all day cleaning."
"And you're going to let that happen?"
"I've got no choice." Bernie stood up and put her jacket on. "Come on. I'll take you home." Bernie said as Serena followed her out of the cafe.

Apart from Serena giving Bernie the directions to home. The drive to Serena's was very quiet.
"It's this one here." Serena said as Bernie stopped the car.
"Nice house."
"Thanks. You're pissed off with me aren't you?"
"Not really."
"I think you are. Look I'm really sorry about what I said back there. It's just I was shocked that's all."
"Shocked about what?"
"Well when you said that you will soon have to look for a husband. I just thought that you were. Well you know."
"No, I don't know. What?"
"Well just thought that you were gay
Same as me." Bernie felt like shouting out loud that she was. But she didn't.
"Well I'm not. Sorry." Bernie said as Serena's felt her heart sink.
"No I'm sorry. I shouldn't have presumed. I better let you get back."
"Thank you for the lift home. And for being so good with Fleur."
"Your welcome."
"Goodnight Bernie."
"Goodnight Serena." They both smiled at each other as Serena got out of the car. Serena walked up to her front door and watched as Bernie drove away.

"It's only me." Serena called out as she walked through the front door.
"Hi darling. Have you had a good time." Adrienne smiled as Serena stood at the lounge door.
"It was OK. Where's Dad."
"He's gone to play snooker with Ron."
"I'm gonna make myself a hot chocolate. Do you want one Mum?"
"Please love." Serena went into the kitchen, made the hot chocolate and went back into the lounge. "So how was the fair." Adrienne asked as Serena sat beside her on the sofa.
"It was alright. Oh you'll be pleased to know I have fallen out with Sian.”
“What's she done?”
“She was being really awful to Fleur."
"She was what?" Adrienne said angrily.
"It's alright Mum. I soon put her in her place. No one treats Fleur like that. Not while I'm around."
"Good for you love."
"There was a girl at the fair."
"Oh yes."
"Yes. Her family owns the fair." Serena smiled as she thought of Bernie. "She was so good with Fleur Mum. We er, we lost Fleur for a while. But Bernie, that's the girl. She took Fleur to her caravan to keep her safe."
"That was nice of her."
"Yes it was. She even gave us all a lift home."
"Good looking girl is she. This Bernie?"
"Very good looking. In fact she's absolutely beautiful. But."
"But what?"
"Bernie is straight Mum."
"I'm sorry darling. You're a gorgeous girl Serena. There's plenty more fish in the sea. You'll soon find the right girl."
"I hope so."
"I'm off to bed. I'm knackered. Turn everything off before you go to bed."
"I will."
"Goodnight sweetheart."
"Night Mum." Adrienne lent over and kissed Serena on the cheek before she got up off the sofa and went upstairs.

Bernie didn't get very far; she drove to the end of the street and turned back around. Bernie just sat in her car staring at Serena's house. Serena is the most gorgeous girl I have ever seen. Just get out of the car and ring the bloody bell. She thought to herself.
"You can do this Wolfe. Stop being a wimp." Bernie said out loud as she took a deep breath and finally got out of her car. Come on Wolfe. Be brave for once in your life she thought as she put her finger to the doorbell and pressed it.
"Bernie. What are you doing here?" Serena said as she opened the door.
"I er. I just. I."
"You just what? Spit it out."
"I just thought. I just thought I would bring you these." Bernie went into her pocket and got out a load of tokens. "There for the rides. So if you and Fleur want to come back. You don't have to pay."
"Thank you. That's very kind of you." Serena said as Bernie put them in her hand.
"No problem." Bernie said as they looked into each other's eyes. "I better go. I'll maybe see you soon."
"Maybe you will."
"Bye Bernie." Serena watched Bernie as she got into her car and drove away.

Bernie laid in bed the next morning just staring at the ceiling. She had a good sleep because all she could think about was Serena. Stop being such a wimp. Bernie thought as she got out of bed and got washed and dressed.
"Morning love." Paddy Bernie’s Dad said as she came out of her caravan.
"Morning Dad."
"You're up early."
"I'm gonna head into town for an hour before we open. Is that alright?"
"Oh course. See you later."
"See you later." Bernie got into her car and drove to Serena's.
"Just say that you find her really attractive but because of my family you and her can never be more than friends." Bernie muttered out loud as she walked up to Serena's front door and rang the bell.
"Yes love." said a tall beautiful brunette who answered the door.
"Erm is Serena in?"
"She is but she's still in bed."
"Ok. Sorry." Bernie said as she went to walk away.
"Do you want me to give her a message for you?"
"No it's alright. Thank you." Bernie smiled nervously as she walked to her car.
"Who's that love?" George Serena's Dad asked as he put her arms around his wife's waist.
"I think she is the girl your eldest child has got her eye on."
"Serena's got a girlfriend?"
"No. Not yet she hasn't."
"I better go and pick his lordship up from me Mum and Dad's. And get him to football practice."
"Ok. Have you got all his stuff for him?"
"I have." George said as he held a bag up in the air. "See you later."
"See you later."
"Love you."
"I love you." Adrienne smiled as George kissed her softly. And walked to the car.

"Morning Mum." Serena said as she sat down at the kitchen table.
"More like afternoon."
"Is it heck. It's only 11.00."
"Well while you have been lingering in your pit. You have had a visitor." Adrienne said as she gave Serena a cup of tea.
"Well she was blonde. Tall and very pretty."
"Was it Bernie?"
"Does it sound like Bernie?" Serena nodded as she fiddled with her necklace.
"Did Erm. Did she say what she wanted?"
"No. I asked her if she wanted me to give you a message. But she just said no."
"Maybe you should go and see her."
"I might go later." Serena said as she took a drink of her tea.
"Oh God the peace is shattered now." Adrienne said as she heard George and Serena's 8 year old younger brother Dylan come home.
"Hi Mum."
"Hi love."
"Alright sis." Dylan said as he ruffled Serena's hair.
"Get your mucky hands out of my hair."
"Chill out sis. I will be mucky the field was really muddy.
"Try getting a shower after football then you scrubber."
"Shut up."
"Pack in it you two please."
"Hey Mum I got picked to play next week."
"Well done. Now go and get a shower Serena's right your filthy."
"Alright I'm going. That's the trouble with women, Dad. All they do is nag nag nag."
"You'll get nag nag nag. Get up those stairs now and get a shower." Adrienne said as she tried not to laugh.
"So who's that girl that turned up wanted to see you this morning?" George asked as he made himself a drink.
"Like Mum hasn't told you who she is."
"I want you to tell me." Serena's Dad said as he sat down.
"Her name is Bernie and she is with the fair that's in town."
"And nothing. She's straight. She isn't interested in me."
"But you're interested in her are you?"
"I am but what's the point if she's not interested in me."
"Oh sweetheart. You're a beautiful intelligent girl. You will soon find the perfect girl for you." George said as he put put his arm Serena.
"I hope so." Serena kissed her Dad and went upstairs.

"Mum." Dylan said as she came into the lounge and sat beside his Mum.
"Yes, trouble."
"Can you and Dad take me to the fair this afternoon?"
"Not today love."
"Because we have to go to the supermarket in a bit when your Dad has finished watching the darts."
"I don't want to go to the supermarket."
"Then you can stay here with your sister. Actually Dylan why don't you ask Serena to take you to the fair."
"She won't take me."
"You never know unless you ask. Tell her if she takes you then I will give you money to pick up five guys for us all on your way back home."
"Yes. I love five guys. I'm. I'm gonna go and ask her now." Dylan smiled as he jumped off the sofa and ran upstairs. "Serena."
"What do you want?" Serena said as she opened her bedroom door to let Dylan in.
"Can you take me to the fair this afternoon please."
"Let me think. No."
"Please. Mum said she will give us money for tea if you do. Five Guys Serena."
"If I take you will you stop being a pain in the arse?"
"Sis I'm your younger brother. It's my job to be a pain in the arse. Ring Fleur see if she wants to come with us."
"I've just rang Fleur. She's gone to her Grans for a few days."
"Then it will just be me and you. Brother and sister spending quality time together."
"Quality time. With you."
"Yes. You know you'll miss me when you go to university."
"Oh yes I'll miss you. Like an hole in the head."
"Come on Serena please take me."
"Ok I'll take you alright."
"Thank you. Hurry up and get dressed then." Dylan smiled as he ran out of the bedroom. I hope I see Bernie this afternoon. I need to know why she came round this morning Serena thought as she began to get dressed.

"SERENA, ARE YOU READY? Dylan shouted from the bottom of the stairs.
"Yes. Bloody hell." Serena said as she walked down the stairs.
"What have you got all dressed up for?"
"Because I wanted to. Now get your coat."
"You've put makeup on as well."
"I always wear makeup when I go anywhere."
"Not that much."
"Look do you want me to take you to the fair or not?"
"Then shut up and get moving before I change my mind." Serena said as she shoved Dylan towards the door. "See you later." Serena called out as she put her jacket on.
"Have fun." Adrienne smiled as she came out of the kitchen. "Here take this and pick up dinner on your way home." Adrienne put money in Serena's hand.
"Ok. See you later." Serena kissed her Mum on the cheek as her and Dylan left the house.

"I want to go on the waltzer first." Dylan said as they got to the fair. But Serena was too busy looking to see if she could Bernie. "Serena, are you listening to me?" Dylan asked as he tugged on Serena's hand.
"What did you say?"
"I said I want to go on the waltzer first."
"Ok." Serena and Dylan made their way to the waltzer.
"Are you coming on with me?"
"Yes." Serena smiled as she saw Bernie behind the booth. A few minutes later Bernie stopped the ride and came out of the booth.
"Dylan, don't run." Serena said as the gate opened and he ran to get on. Serena sat down beside Dylan and waited as she watched Bernie go around collecting tokens.
"Hi." Bernie said as she got to Serena and Dylan.
"Hi." Serena smiled as she put the tokens in Bernie’s hands.
"Thank you." Bernie winked as she carried on collecting tokens. Bernie went back to the booth and started the ride. She's so bloody gorgeous Bernie thought to herself as she watched Serena laughing as the ride went round. As the ride finished Bernie practically ran out of the booth and went straight to the cart where Serena was and helped her off the ride.
"Thank you." Serena said as she held Bernie’s hand as she got off the ride.
"You're very welcome." They stood staring at each other for a few moments until Dylan grabbed Serena's hand.
"Serena, come on I want to go on the bumper cars."
"I better go."
"Yes course."
"Come on." Dylan dragged Serena to the bumper cars.

"Here." Serena said as she put the tokens in Dylan's hand.
"Are you not coming on with me?"
"No. I'll watch you."
"Ok." Dylan ran and got in a car.
"Babysitting today are you?" Bernie said as she stood beside Serena.
"Something like that. He's my brother. He wanted to come and I got saddled with bringing him."
"I'm glad you did."
"Are you?"
"I hoped I would see you again."
"Is that why you came to my house this morning?"
"Yes. I erm."
"Look I can't talk now but can I see you later on your own? There's something I really need to tell you."
"Sure. When?"
"Here's my number. Text me when you have taken your brother home."
"Ok." They both smiled at each other before Bernie went back to work.

A few hours later Serena and Dylan picked up some food and made their way home.
"Mum we are back." Dylan called out as they got home.
"Did you have a good time sweetie?" Adrienne said as she gave Dylan a hug.
"Yeah it was really good. I'm hungry now though."
"Go and wash your hands then we will eat."
"Ok." Dylan said as he ran upstairs.
"So did you see Bernie at the fair?" Adrienne asked as he and Serena started putting the burgers and chips out.
"Yes I did. She wants to meet me later. She says she has something to tell me."
"And are you going to meet her?"
"Of course. And before you say I know nothing is gonna come of it. But I really like her Mum."
"Do you think she likes you too?
"Not in that way I don't think."
"You never know. She might. George Dylan dinner." Adrienne called out as Serena took her plate and sat down and at the table.

After Serena had her tea she went upstairs and sat on her bed.

Hi, it's Serena. Where do you want to meet? Xx

I'll come and pick you up in about 15 minutes. Is that OK? Xx

That's fine. See you soon. Xx

You will. Xx

Serena sat down at her dressing table and put a bit more lipstick on and brushed her hair. When her phone went off.

I'm outside. Xx

OK. I'll be right out. Xx

Serena put her phone in her pocket and ran downstairs.
"Mum I'm going out." Serena said as she stood at the lounge door.
"Ok darling. Have you got your key?"
"Yes. See you later."
"See you later love." Serena smiled as she walked down the drive and saw Bernie stood by her car.
"Hi." Bernie smiled as she opened the door for Serena to get in the car.
"Thank you." Serena got in the car and put on her seat belt. "So where are we going?" She asked as Bernie got in the car.
"I thought we could go get a coffee and talk. Is that alright."
"Yeah fine." Bernie felt nervous as she started the car. "So erm how old is your brother?"
"He's 8 going on 18. He's a little sod."
"He looks cheeky."
"He is. But I love him to bits."
"Shall we go in here?" Bernie asked as she stopped the car.
"Yeah OK."
"Wait there." Bernie got out and went around to open the door again to let Serena out.
"Thank you."
"Shall we." Serena nodded as they went inside the cafe.

Serena sat down while Bernie went and got the drinks.
"So erm. What do you want to talk to me about?" Serena said as Bernie sat down.
"This isn't easy for me. But last night I lied to you."
"What about?"
"I told you that I wasn't gay. When the truth is. I am." Thank god for that Serena thought to herself.
"So why didn't you just say that in the first place?"
"Because my family. They don't believe in that sort of thing."
"That sort of thing. You mean their homophobic?"
"Yes. If they ever found out I would be disowned."
"That's awful. But what if you just talked to them and explained."
"It wouldn't help. I've seen it happen Serena. It happened to my cousin he came out and we never saw him again. We aren't even allowed to talk about him. It's like he never existed."
"I'm sorry. I can't imagine what it's like for you. My parents were so supportive when I told them I was gay."
"Then you're lucky. I will never have that. My family has already started nagging me to hurry up and find a husband. And I'm so scared."
"So what are you going to do?"
"I don't know. I thought I could just go along with it but."
"But what?"
"Then a beautiful girl came into my life." Shit she likes someone else Serena thought as her heart sank.

"I can't stop thinking about her. What it would be like to be with her. To touch her. And kiss her."
"Have er, have you told this girl how you feel?"
"I'm telling her now." Bernie said as she put her head down.
"Me. You're talking about me?" Serena smiled.
"Who else do you think I'm talking about. You are absolutely gorgeous. And so caring. I love how you take care of your friend. I have never met anyone like you before. I wanted to tell you all this last night when I came to your house but I chickened out."
"Is that why you came round this morning too?"
"Yes. I'm sorry but I just had to tell you how I feel."
"I'm glad you told me. Because I feel the same way." Serena said as she reached across the table and put her hand on top of Bernie’s.
"You do."
"Yes. But I thought it was one sided."
"It's definitely not one sided believe me." Bernie said as she squeezed Serena's hand.
"So what do we do now?"
"We can't do anything, can we."
"So you're just going to continue living a lie."
"I have to."
"Then why even have this conversation with me in the first place." Serena said as she stood up. "I couldn't live a lie. But if that's what you want. I hope you enjoy your life." Serena grabbed her jacked and ran out of the cafe.
"SERENA WAIT." Bernie shouted as she ran after her.
"For what. I really like you Bernie. For a minute there I had a little bit of hope and you just took it away. Just like that" Serena cried as she clicked her fingers. "Don't cry please." Bernie pulled Serena to her and kissed her softly.

Chapter Text

The kiss soon became passionate as they pressed themselves against each other.
"You shouldn't have done that." Serena said as they came up for air.
"Why shouldn't I?"
"Because I want
you even more now." Serena said with tears in her eyes as she put her head against Bernie’s. "What are we gonna do?"
"I don't know. All I do know is that I can't get enough of you." Bernie smiled as she stroked Serena's face softy. "You are absolutely stunning."
"So are you." Serena said as she leaned back in and kissed Bernie.
"Can we keep seeing each other till I leave Holby?"
"What's the point? Like you said. In a few weeks you will be leaving."
"I have to leave Serena. You know that."
"I know you do. And that's why it's best if we don't keep seeing each other. I don't just want to spend a few weeks with you Bernie. Because I know the more time I spend with you. I will want you even more. And I just know I will end up falling in love with you. Then you will leave and I'll be left heartbroken. And I don't think I could handle that."
"Serena please." "Just take me home Bernie." Serena said as she opened the door and got in the car.

The journey to Serena's was very quiet; neither of them spoke a word. Serena just looked out of the window the whole time. This is gonna be the last time I ever see this girl. Bernie thought to herself as she turned onto Serena's street.
"Thank you for the lift home." Serena said as she unfastened her seat belt.
"It's fine."
"I better go. Bye Bernie." Serena said as she put one hand on the door handle.
"Serena, wait." Bernie said as she leaned over and put her hand on Serena's to stop her. "I don't want this to be the last time I see you."
"I don't want it to be either." Serena said as she stroked Bernie’s face gently. "But It has to be."
"Please I'm begging you."
"Let me ask you something. If I say yes to seeing you again. And we end up getting really close. I mean really close. And maybe even end up falling in love with each other. Would you come clean and tell your parents about us huh?" Bernie shook her head and looked at the floor." I didn't think so. You're a coward. And I don't want to be with a coward. Good luck with the future Bernie. I hope you enjoy your life based on lies." Serena said angrily as she got out the car and slammed the door behind her.

Serena ran up the house and shut the door. Before breaking down in tears.
"Your back early. Hey darling whatever is the matter?" Adrienne asked as she came out of the kitchen and put her arms around Serena.
"I won't be seeing her again Mum." Serena sobbed.
"I take it you're talking about Bernie." Serena nodded as she hugged her Mum tighter. "Come and tell me what's happened sweetheart?" Adrienne held Serena's hand as she led her into the lounge.
"Where's Dad and Dylan?"
"Upstairs watching football. Come on tell me all about it."
"Bernie told me tonight that she was gay and that she really liked me."
"That's good isn't. That you both feel the same."
"I guess. But she won't tell her parents that she is gay Mum. They are homophobic and she says that if she tells them then they will disown her."
"That's disgusting. How can any parent do that."
"I don't know. Bernie wanted to keep seeing me till she goes. But I think it's best we don't. She is still going to find a husband and live a lie to please her parents. And I'm not prepared to get my heart broken."
"It's probably for the best love. Best put a stop to it now. Then get hurt a few weeks down the line."
"But it hurts right now Mum."
"I know baby girl." Serena cried as Adrienne held her tightly.

Serena woke up the next morning and turned to look at the time. Oh God I have only had 3 hours sleep she thought to herself as she got out of bed and walked to the bathroom.
"Who's in there?" Dylan said as he knocked on the bathroom door.
"Hurry up I need a wee."
"You'll have to wait." Serena said as she washed her hands and face.
"MUM TELL SERENA TO HURRY UP IN THE BATHROOM." Dylan shouted from the top of the stairs.
"It's all yours morngy." Serena said as she eventually came out of the bathroom.
"About time." Dylan said as he ran past Serena.
"Morning love. How are you feeling today?" Adrienne said Serena walked into the lounge.
"Rubbish. I have had the worst night's sleep ever." Serena huffed as she slumped down in the arm chair.
"I take it a certain Blonde was on your mind was she?"
"A little."
"A lot more like. Look sweetheart." Adrienne stood up and sat on the chair arm. "I know it probably doesn't feel like it just now. But you've done the right thing nipping this in the bud before it gets too serious. You are a young beautiful girl. You'll soon find another girl." Adrienne smiled as she kissed Serena on the cheek.
"I don't think I want another girl Mum. I can't stop thinking about Bernie." Serena cried as Adrienne put her arms around and hugged her tightly.

A while later Serena went back upstairs and laid on her bed.
"Will you keep an eye on Dylan for me I'm just popping out for a while." Adrienne asked George as he came in out of the garden.
"Yes sure. Where are you going?"
"There's something I need to do. I won't be long." Adrienne kissed George as she grabbed her car keys and ran out of the house. Adrienne stopped the car and got out. She walked round the fair and spotted Bernie at the Waltzer.
"Hello Bernie." Adrienne said as she walked closer to her.
"I need to talk to you about Serena. Is there somewhere we can talk in private?"
"Yes of course. Damien you're in charge." Bernie said as Adrienne followed Bernie to her caravan.

"Come in."
"Thank you." Adrienne said as she stepped inside.
"Make yourself comfortable. Can I get you a drink?"
"I'm fine thanks." Adrienne said as she sat down. "You know my daughter really likes you."
"I know. And I assure you the feeling is mutual. But we can't be together."
"Because of your family."
"Yes. They wouldn't approve."
"So you are going to let your family run your life for you are you?"
"They are all I've got."
"Not necessarily."
"What do you mean?"
"Look when you find someone that you want to be with. I mean really want to be with. Then you shouldn't let anything or anyone stand in your way."
"Look, I know what you're trying to do. I asked Serena if I could carry on seeing her till I left but she said no."
"Because she wants more that's why."
"BUT I CAN'T GIVE HER MORE." Bernie shouted as she began to pace the floor. "I really wished I could because Serena is the kindest, most beautiful girl I have ever met."
"Look I don't agree with your family's beliefs. In fact I find it appalling. They are living in the dark ages."
"I know but it's their way. And if I don't go along with it."
"Then they will disown you, I know Serena said. But if you really want to be with Serena as much as you day you do. Then there will always be a place for you in our house."
"Really. Think about it." Adrienne smiled as she stood up and left the caravan.

"Where's Mum?" Serena asked her Dad as she went into the lounge and sat on the sofa.
"She said she had to nip out. I don't know where she's gone. You don't want to make your old Dad a cup of tea do you love?"
"Not really."
Go on. You're supposed to look after your parents in their old age."
"You're only in your early 40s. It's not exactly old age is it?"
"Go on sweetheart. Please." George smiled widely.
"OK." Serena said as she stood up and walked to the kitchen.
"What now?" Serena said as she walked back to the lounge door.
"Bring some of the good biscuits that your Mum hides from me."
"What good biscuits?"
"You know what good biscuits, lady. The ones your Mum only gets out when we have visitors. I know you know where she hides them."
"Fine." Serena laughed as she went back into the kitchen.

"The kettles on Mum. Do you want a drink?" Serena said as she saw her Mum come through the door.
"Please darling." Adrienne smiled as she took off her coat and went into the lounge. "Is Dylan upstairs?"
"No, he's gone to Harry's. So where have you been?"
"I went to see Bernie."
"Why do you think love? If it hasn't escaped your notice our daughter really likes her. And Bernie likes Serena."
"But I thought you said that Serena had told her that they shouldn't see each other again."
"She did. But I know that's not what Serena what's or Bernie for that matter. So I told Bernie if she wanted to be with Serena then they would always be a place for her here in our home."
"You did what?" Serena said as she came into the lounge.
"I was going to tell you."
"When." Serena said as she put the cups down on the coffee table.
"I think I'll take my tea outside." George said as he stood up.

"No, stay there Dad. This is your house too. So why did you go and see Bernie?"
"Because I could see how upset you were. I know how much you like her."
"It doesn't matter how much I like her Mum. Bernie has made it quite clear that we are never gonna be together. Not properly anyway."
"That's why I went to see her. If she ever did feel brave enough to tell her parents the truth then she would have somewhere to go."
"And you would both be OK with that. If she did come here?"
"Of course."
"It's fine by me love. Look, don't be angry with your Mum. At the end of the day she just wants you to be happy. We both do." George said as he held Adrienne's hand.
"I know. I'm sorry for snapping at you." Serena said as she sat down and hugged her Mum.
"It's OK sweetheart."
"So what did Bernie say about coming here?"
"She didn't say anything I asked her then told her I would leave her to think about it."
"OK. I'm not going to get my hopes up because I don't think Bernie will ever tell her parents the truth. I think she will just continue to live a lie." Serena said as she stood up.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm gonna go for a walk. I won't be long." Serena hugged her parents and left the house.

Chapter Text

Serena walked around for a while before she knew it she was walking past the fair. Serena stood for a minute listening to the sounds of children laughing and having fun. She walked around the fair and stood still when she saw Bernie. Bernie turned around and waved when she saw Serena standing there.
"Hey." Bernie said as she ran up to her. "Are you ok?"
"Yes, fine. Can we erm? Can we talk? In private."
"Yes, sure. Follow me." Bernie smiled as Serena followed Bernie to her caravan.
"What do you want to talk about?" Bernie asked as they both sat down.
"My Mum said she came round to see you today."
"Yes she did. She's lovely, your Mum."
"Yes she is. She told me what she said to you. About there always being a place for you in our house."
"I was shocked that she had even suggested it to be honest. I mean she hardly knows me."
"I hardly know you either. But I know how I feel about you." Serena said as she put her head down.
"Serena please don't."
"Don't what? Don't tell the truth. I want to be with you Bernie."
"Why? when I have absolutely nothing to offer you. You are going to university in a few weeks to be a Doctor. I have no qualifications or nothing."

"I don't care about that." Serena said as she took Bernie's hands in hers. "Look I've been thinking about what you said about us seeing each other till the fair leaves."
"Forget about what I said. It was a stupid idea." Bernie said as she let go of Serena's hands.
"What if I can't forget about it? What if I can't forget about you."
"You have to forget about me." Bernie stood up and began to pacing the floor. "We can't ever be together Serena can't you see that."
"Yes we can. All you have to do is be brave and tell your parents the truth."
"I CAN'T."
"Can't or won't? Why can't you just be honest. Do you really want to end up marrying a man who you will never really love? Having to have sex with him even though you don't find him remotely actractive. Can you honestly live the rest of your life like that?" Bernie put her head to the floor. "Bernie, look at me please." Serena put her finger underneath Bernie's chin and gently lifted it up. "Talk to me please."
"I can't. I just."
"Just what?" They looked into each other's eyes as Bernie pulled Serena towards and kissed her passionately.

"You are so beautiful, Serena." Bernie smiled as she stroked Serena's face.
"So are you."
"Can I ask you something?"
"You can ask me anything you want." Serena smiled as she led Bernie to the sofa.
"Have you." Bernie took a deep breath. "Have you ever had sex before?"
"Yes I have."
"How many times?"
"Just twice. What about you?"
"Never. We don't allow sex before marriage. But all I can think about is having sex with you." Bernie took Serena's hand and began to kiss her fingers. "I want to feel you inside of me. And I want to know how it feels to be inside of you."
"I want that too so much." Serena leaned forward to kiss Bernie again. Bernie stood up walked to the door and locked it before walking back to Serena.
"Shall we?" Bernie held out her hand for Serena to take which she did.
"Are you sure this is what you want?"
"I've never been so sure of anything in my entire life." Bernie smiled as she squeezed Serena's hand as she led her to the bedroom.

Chapter Text

"This is my bedroom." Bernie said nervously as they walked inside.
"It's lovely."
"I erm I've never done this before."
"We don't have to do anything." Serena said as she held Bernie's hands.
"But I want to. I want to touch you. I want to be inside of you."
"Oh God." Serena grabbed Bernie and kissed her passionately. Serena started to unbutton Bernie's shirt taking in the glorious sight before her. "God you're gorgeous."
"So are you. I want to see you." Bernie put her hands on Serena's t-shirt and slowly lifted it over her head. "Can I take off your bra?" Serena smiled as she nodded. Bernie gently slipped the straps down Serena's arms and pulled it over her breast before undoing the clips and letting it drop to the floor. Bernie just stood staring at Serena's breast not knowing what to do.
"You can touch me you know." Serena smiled as she took Bernie's hand and placed them on her breast. "Let me look after you." Serena laid Bernie down on the bed and pulled off her jeans and knickers. "Take your trousers off too." Bernie said as she watched Serena take off her own trousers and knickers. Serena laid beside Bernie as they kissed again. They rolled around the bed moaning at the feeling of each other's naked body. A few minutes later Serena put her hand in between Bernie's legs and began stroking her clit.
"That feels good."
"Oh I haven't even started yet, beautiful." Serena smirked as she kissed her way down Bernie's body, replacing her finger with her mouth. As she sucked on Bernie's clit.
"Oh fuck." Bernie said as a few seconds later she threw her head back as Serena put two fingers inside of her and pumped in and out.

"Do you want more?"
"Yes more." Serena added another two fingers filling Bernie.
"Shit. Shit. Shit." Bernie screamed out a few minutes later as she came.
"Are you ok?"
"I'm more than OK. My God you're fabulous." Bernie rolled them over so she was on top of Serena. "I want to make love to you now." Bernie stroked Serena's face and kissed her softly.
"You don't have to."
"I told you. I want to. Just bare with me OK."
"I'm sure you'll be just fine." Serena sighed as Bernie took one of her nipples into her mouth. Bernie then wasted no time in entering Serena.
"Fuck. Oh yes." Serena screamed out as she squeezed Bernie's free hand. "I need to come."
"REALLY." Serena screamed out as she came over Bernie's fingers. Bernie crawled up the bed and kissed Serena softly.
"You are the most beautiful, sexiest person I have ever laid eyes on."
"So are you." Bernie pulled the duvet over them as they laid in each other's arms.

"I better go soon." Serena sighed as she buried her head in Bernie's neck.
"I wish you didn't have to. I wished you could stay the night."
"You could always come back to mine and spend the night."
"As much as I'd love to. I can't. It would take too much explaining to my parents."
"And we don't want to upset your Mum and Dad do we." Serena snapped as she got out of bed and started to get dressed.
"Serena, don't be like this."
"You're happy now you've got what you wanted aren't you. Now you're just gonna pretend that it never happened. That your not gay."
"But you agreed."
"That was before we'd made love to one another. Before I knew what I was missing out on. My God I want to be with you. But it's not going to happen is it. Because you're a coward. And I don't want to be with a coward. Have a nice life Bernie. I don't want to see you again."
"You can't leave it like this."
"It's not me saying it's over Bernie. It's you." Serena kissed Bernie on the cheek and ran out of the caravan.

Chapter Text

Serena ran home in tears. "MUM. MUM." she called out as she shut the front door.
"Hey love." Adrienne said as she came out of the kitchen drying her hands on a tea towel. "Serena whatever's the matter?"
"I've done something really stupid Mum."
"Come in the lounge and tell me all about it." Serena followed her Mum into the lounge.
"Where's Dad?"
"He's just gone to get Dylan from his friends. Now tell me what you've done that's so stupid."
"I went to see Bernie."
"I just went to talk to at first."
"What do you mean at first?"
"We ended up sleeping together."
"I hope you're not going to lie to me and say it was your first time. Because I know it isn't."
"No I'm not. But I want her even more then ever now. And she is never gonna pluck up the courage to tell her parents."
"So she isn't even gonna think about what I said to her?"
"Is she heck. I can't lose her Mum. I'm falling in love with her." Serena cried as Adrienne put her arms around Serena and hugged her.
"Sometimes in life we can't always have what we want sweetheart."
"I know that Mum." Serena wiped her eyes and stood up.
"Where are you going now?"
"I'm going to have a nice soak in the bath."
"Ok darling." Adrienne smiled as Serena went upstairs.

Later that evening Serena was laid on her bed watching TV when Dylan barged in
"Get out you." Serena snapped as she jumped off the bed.
"I heard Mum telling Dad that you were crying earlier."
"What's that got to do with you?"
"I'm your brother."
"You're just a kid. Go back and play on your xbox."
"I might be just a kid but you're my sister and I don't want you to be upset." Serena parted the bed and Dylan sat down beside her. "Are you upset because of Bernie?"
"How do you know?"
"I'm a kid. I do a lot of listening at doors."
"You're a nosy little shite is what you are." Serena smiled as she ruffled Dylan's hair.
"So do you want to talk to me about her?"
"Not really. But thank you anyway. You're not a bad lad."
"DYLAN YOU BETTER BE IN THAT BATH." Adrienne shouted from the bottom of the stairs.
"You better go get in the bath." Dylan stood up and threw his arms around Serena.
"What's this for?"
"I love ya."
"I love you too." Serena smiled as they hugged.
"Don't tell anyone about this though. It will do my reputation no good."
"I won't tell a soul." Serena chuckled to herself as Dylan left her bedroom.

"Bernie I want a word with you." Bernie's Dad said as they walked back to their caravans after the fair closed that night.
"What up Dad?"
"That's what I wondered. What's going on Bernie?"
"I don't know what you mean?"
"Well for starters you keep wandering off hours on end and leaving other people to do your job for you. Where do you keep going?"
"It's got nothing to do with you."
"It's got everything to do with me. I'm your Dad. This is a family business and we all have to pull together. But lately you seem to be doing as little as possible."
"I'm sorry."
"This hasn't got anything to do with that girl that keeps hanging around the fair has it?"
"What girl?" Bernie asked nervously.
"That young pretty girl with the long brown hair."
"Then why is she always hanging around? Come on Bernie I'm not stupid."
"We just get on that's all."
"Bernie you know I don't approve of you making friends with those sort of people."
"Those sort of people. Serena is going to university in a few weeks to train to be a Doctor."
"I don't care. You're not to see her again. Are you listening to me?"
"You can't stop me."
"Can't I. And why's that?"

Chapter Text

"What did you just say?" Bernie's Dad said angrily.
"You heard me. I love her Dad. I love Serena."
"You love her. In what way do you love her Bernie?"
"The same way that you love Mum. I'm gay Dad. I love Serena and I want to be with her."
"Over my dead body. Come with me." Bernie's Dad grabbed her arm and dragged her to another caravan.
"Dad, get off me." Bernie screamed.
"What the hell is going on Paddy?" Molly Bernie's Mum said as he dragged Bernie into the caravan he shared with his wife. "Paddy let go of her. Are you alright my darling." Bernie's Mum said as she hugged Bernie.
"Don't be nice to her Mol. Go on, Bernie. Tell your Mum what you've just told me."
"Dad please." Bernie cried as she held her Mum's hand.
"TELL HER." Paddy shouted.
"Stop shouting at her Paddy. Sweetheart whoever it is you can tell me."
"I've fallen in love with someone, Mum."
"Well that's good darling."
"That's what you think."
"Paddy shut up."
"I've fallen in love with a woman Mum."
"It's true Mol. It's that Serena girl that keeps knocking around here."
"We'll be leaving here soon. Then Bernie won't be seeing here again. Will you?"
"I can't give her up Mum. Have you not listened to a word I've just said. I love her and I want to be with her."
"If you want that then you are no longer a member of this family."
"There's no need for that Paddy."
"There's every need Molly. She knows the rules and she has broken them. Go and pack your bags and go. Don't even think about taking the caravan."
"That's mine. You bought it for my birthday."
"Well now I'm taking it back. I'm not having you and her using it as your little love nest." Her Dad said angrily.
"Fine I will go and pack." Bernie stormed out and slammed the door behind her.
"How could you do that? She's our daughter. Our little girl." Bernie's Mum said angrily as she ran out after Bernie.

"You don't have to do this sweetheart." Bernie's Mum said as she ran into Bernie's caravan.
"You heard what Dad said. There's no way he's gonna let me stay here. And do you know something? I don't want to stay here. Not with bigots like him. I'm used to feeling so ashamed of the feelings I had. But I'm not anymore. I can finally say it out loud that I've found the woman of my dreams. The woman I want to be with more than anything. And if he can't handle that then tough. Because there is no way I am ever gonna give her up." Bernie chucked the rest of things in a bag and picked it up.
"I'm gonna miss you." Bernie's Mum cried.
"I'm gonna miss you too."
"Please keep in touch with me. We can text each other. I don't want to lose you." Bernie's Mum sobbed as she flung her arms around Serena. "I'll have a word with your Dad OK."
"I think you'd be wasting your time Mum. I love you."
"I love you my darling girl." Bernie kissed her Mum on the cheek and left the van. She got into her car and saw her Dad standing beside her Mum.
"Happy now are you." Molly snapped as Verie drove away. "I'll never forgive you for this Paddy."
“What did you expect me to do? It goes against everything we believe in.”
“You mean it goes against everything you believe in. You might be prepared to lose our daughter. Our own flesh and blood. But I'm certainly not." Molly snapped as she stormed off.

"Are you alright love?" Adrienne asked as Serena stood at the lounge door. Serena shrugged her shoulders. "Is your brother in that bath yet?"
"I think he's going in now. I'm going to see Fleur."
"I thought she was at her Grandma's."
"I've just rang her and she's back home."
"Ok. Do you want your Dad or me to pick you later?"
"No, I'll be alright" "Watch what you're doing then."
"Will do. See you later."
"Bye." Serena put her coat on and left the house. As she walked up the street a car pulled up alongside her.
"Where are you going?" Bernie asked as she put her window down.
"I'm going to Fleurs. Not that it's any of your business." Serena snapped as she carried on walking.
"Serena, wait. We need to talk." Bernie said as she got out of the car.
"I haven't got anything to talk to you about. Not anymore."
"I was hoping we could talk about our future."
"We don't have a future do we. And why don't we because you're a coward that's why."
"Not anymore I'm not." Bernie smiled as she reached out and took Serena's hands in hers.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean I've told them Serena. I've told my parents about us."
"You have."
"I have. *
"I'm so proud of you." Serena cried as she hugged Bernie. "What did your parents say?"
"I'm no longer part of the family. but if it means I can be with you it's worth it."
"You can be a part of our family. You know you can stay with us."
"I love you Serena."
"I love you too." Serena smiled as she kisses Bernie lovingly.

"Come on, let's go inside." Serena smiled as she held Bernie's hand as they walked into the house.
"Are you sure your parents won't mind?"
"My Mum said you would always be welcome in our home. Come on. It's only me." Serena called out.
"I thought you were going to Fleurs."
"I was but. We have a visitor Mum." Serena said as he and Bernie walked into the lounge hand in hand.
"Hello Bernie."
"Alright love." George said as he smiled at Bernie and went back to watching the TV.
"Hello Mr and Mrs McKinnie."
"There's no need to call us Mr and Mrs McKinnie. It's Adrienne and George."
"Come in and sit down and I'll put the kettle on."
"Not for love I'm gonna have beer."
"Mum, before you make a drink there's something we need to tell you."
"What's that?"
"I have told my parents about me and Serena and they kicked me out of the family."
"They have even taken her caravan off her."
"Bastards." George muttered under his breath.
"So we were wondering if it was still OK for Bernie to stay here with us?"
"It's fine with me. George, you don't mind if Bernie stays with us, do you?"
"At least she won't get kicked out of here."
"I'm sorry Serena but who could kick their own child out. You can stay with us as long as you want Bernie love."
"Thank you. Both of you. I will get myself a job and pay my way."
"There's no rush. Right I'll go and make us a brew and get some food on."
"We'll have a takeaway babe."
"Ok." Adrienne went to walk out of the lounge.
"Give Dylan a shout and tell the football starts in 10 minutes."
"DYLAN FOOTBALL IS COMING ON SOON." Adrienne shouted from the bottom of the stairs.
"Ok." Dylan ran downstairs and jumped on George's knee.

"Bloody hell son." George smiled as hugged Dylan.
"Hello you're from the fair aren't you?"
"I was yes."
"Bernie is going to be staying with us."
"Oh right."
"Do you mind?"
"No. So who's gonna win tonight Dad."
England of course."
"Bernie, do you take sugar in your tea?" Adrienne said as she came back into the lounge.
"No thank you."
"There you go."
"Here Dylan, there's your drink and that to your Dad." Adrienne gave Dylan a can of come and George's can of beer.
"Here Dad." Dylan said as he gave George the cab of coke.
"Nice try sunshine." George ruffled Dylan's hair as he took the beer off him.
"Do you like football?"
"Yeah I love it."
"Why don't you like football?"
"Serena hates it." Dylan said as he took a big drink of his coke and did a loud burp.
"Dylan you tramp." Serena said as Bernie began to laugh. "Don't laugh at him, he'll do all the more." Serena sat back against the sofa and made herself comfortable. Bernie sat back too and nervously put her arm around Serena. Serena didn't hesitate in cuddling up to Bernie. As they watched the football Adrienne glanced over and smiled to herself as she saw Serena and Bernie cuddling up to each other.

"YES GET IN." George and Dylan shouted together as England scored.
"That was a great goal." Bernie said as she put her plate on the coffee table.
"It was, wasn't it." Dylan said with a mouthful of food.
"Don't talk with your mouth sweetheart."
"Sorry Mum."
"I'm sorry about my brother. He's a pain in the arse."
"He's alright." Bernie smiled as she put her arm back around Serena.
"Come on you bedtime." Adrienne said to Dylan after the football.
"Why there's no school tomorrow."
"I don't care it's late. Bed come on. Say goodnight to everyone."
"Night Dad."
"Night son." George said as he gave Dylan a hug. "Love you."
"Love you too."
"Night Sis."
"Night Bernie."
"Night Dylan. See you tomorrow." Adrienne took Dylan upstairs.
"Are you going to get your bags out of your car?"
"Yeah I'll go get them."
"I'll give you hand." George stood and walked with Bernie to her car.
"Can you manage them?"
"Yes course I can."
"Thank you for letting me stay here."
"Listen I can't say that happy about what your parents have done to you. In fact I'm fuming. I could never do that to any of my children. As long as they are happy that's I care about. And I can see how happy you make my daughter. You can stay here for as long as you long. This is your home now." George said with tears in his eyes.
"Thank you I really appreciate it."
"Come on." George wiped his eyes. "Let's get back inside it's bloody freezing out here." Bernie locked her car up and followed George back into the house.

"I'll take these to Serena's room for you." George said as they got back inside.
"I'll take them up."
"If you want to make yourself useful you can go get me another can out of the fridge. If you don't mind."
"Sure." Bernie smiled as she went into the kitchen to find Serena at the sink washing the pots.
"Do you want a hand with them?" Bernie said as she wrapped her arms around Serena's waist.
"No you're alright. I am only rinsing them before I put them in the dishwasher."
"Your Dad wants me to get him another can of beer out of the fridge."
"Get him one then. There's some cans of pops in there if you want one. Just help yourself."
"I'm alright thanks." Bernie said as she closed the fridge and put the can of beer on the side. "I wouldn't mind a hug though." Serena smiled as she turned around as they hugged each other.
"Sorry to interrupt." George said as he stood at the kitchen door.
"He's your beer." Bernie said as she passed him the can.
"Thank you. I'll leave you two to it."
"We are going up now up now Dad so Bernie can unpack her things." Serena walked up to George and gave him a hug. "Thank you for letting Bernie stay."
"It's OK darling. I'll do anything for you. You're my little girl. I love you and Dylan so much."
"I love you too Dad." Serena let go of her Dad and wiped a tear that was trickling down her cheek.
"Goodnight girls."
"Night." They both said as they went upstairs.

"The bathroom is just there." Serena said as they got upstairs. "And this is my room. Our room now."
"Wow, it's beautiful."
"There is some room in the wardrobe and the bottom 2 drawers are empty if you want to put your things away."
"Thanks." Bernie said as she started to unpack her bags."
"While you're doing that I'm gonna jump in the shower."
"Do you want me to get in after me?"
"Actually, would you mind if I got a bath? I've never been in a bath before. I've only ever had showers." Bernie asked nervously.
"Of course you can, you don't have to ask. This is your home now." Serena walked up to Bernie and put her hands in hers. "I'll run a nice bath with plenty of bubbles. How's that sound.?"
"Fantastic." Bernie smiled as she kissed Serena softly.
"I won't be long." Serena grabbed her pajamas from under her pillow and went into the bathroom.
Bernie put the rest of her things away and looked around Serena's bedroom. Bernie smiled as she kicked up a picture of Serena and Fleur.
"That was taken last year when Fleur came on holiday with us." Serena said as she came into the bedroom.
"You two are really good friends aren't you?"
"Yeah, we've been friends since we were very young. I won't ever let anyone hurt her. I love her to bits. Anyway the bath is all run for you. And I have put a clean towel on the radiator. Don't forget to lock the door will you."
"I won't. Thank you." Bernie grabbed her things and left the bedroom.

"Does that feel better?" Serena asked as Bernie came into the bedroom.
"It was lovely. I nearly drifted off to sleep at one point." Bernie said as she stood at the side of the bed and stared at Serena.
"Are you gonna stand there all night or are you going to get into bed?" Serena pulled back the duvet and Bernie got in beside her. "Come here." Serena pulled her closer as they laid on each other's arms.
"What are you watching?"
"Calendar Girls film is coming on in a minute."
"Is it any good?"
"Have you never seen it before?"
"It's good. But I'd watch anything with Julie Walters in it. She's my favourite actress."
After the film finished, Serena turned off the TV and turned around to face Bernie.
"You don't regret telling your parents about us do you?"
"How could I regret it? I am laid here with you in my arms. I love you Serena."
"I love you." Serena kissed Bernie lovingly. "Let's get some sleep eh." Serena turned off the light as they both went to sleep.

Chapter Text

The next morning Bernie opened her eyes and turned around. She smiled as she watched Serena sleeping. Bernie didn't want to wake her up. But she couldn't resist giving Serena a quick kiss on the lips. Serena opened her eyes and smiled.
"Did you sleep alright?"
"Yes I slept well actually."
"What do you want to do today?" Bernie said as she put her arm around Serena and pulled her closer.
"I want to go round and see Fleur at some point."
"Can I come with you?"
"Yes of course you can."
"Why don't we take Fleur out somewhere for the day?" Bernie said as she sat up in bed.
"Are you sure you want to do that?"
"Yes of course I am. I want to get to know Fleur better. She is your best friend after all."
"Thank you." Serena smiled as she kissed Bernie softly.
"So where do you think we should take her?"
"She likes the seaside."
"Then that's where we will take her."
"I will give you some money for petrol."
"No you won't. It's the least I can do."
"Ok then I will buy lunch."
"Fair enough."
"Speaking of food, shall we go down and get some breakfast I famished." Serena said as she got out of bed.
"Yes sure, let me just get dressed."
"You don't have to get dressed, come down in pajamas, it's fine."
"Ok." Bernie smiled as she held Serena's hand as they went downstairs.

"Morning you two." Adrienne said as they both walked into the kitchen.
"Morning." Serena and Bernie said together as they sat down.
"Did you sleep alright Bernie?"
"Yes thank you."
"Help yourself to cereal and toast. And there's tea here." Adrienne said as she put a fresh pot of tea on the table.
"So what are you two doing today.?" George asked as he took a bit of his toast.
"We are going to take Fleur to the seaside for the day."
"That'll be nice. Fleur will love that."
"You're going to the seaside. Can I come?" Dylan said as he bounded into the kitchen.
"No you can't." Serena said as she put down her drink.
"Orr please."
"No Dylan."
"Let him come if he wants to." Bernie said as she smiled at Dylan.
"Please Serena." Dylan begged.
"Oh alright." Serena huffed as she carried on eating her cereal.
"What time is Tony coming for you?" Adrienne asked George as she sat down.
"In about 10 minutes."
"Shouldn't you be getting your fishing tackle out."
"It's already in the garden. I better get my wellies on." George said as he left the table.
"You're Dad likes fishing then?"
"He loves fishing. Him and Uncle Tony go all the time. Speak of the devil." Serena said as they heard a knock at the door.
"Come in bruv." George said as he opened the door.
"Where's your gear?"
"Round the back, come on." George and Tony went through the front door and round the back. After they loaded up the car George came back into the kitchen.
"I'm off love see you later." George said as he gave Adrienne a kiss. "Love you."
"I love you." Bernie and Serena smiled at each other.
"Have a good time Dad."
"Come here you, trouble." Dylan jumped off the chair and walked up to his Dad. "You behave for your sister and Bernie, do you hear me?"
"Yes Dad."
"Because if you don't they will tell me there will be no football for 2 weeks. Right."
"I'll be good."
"And look after Fleur."
"I will."
"Good Lad." George hugged Dylan and put a £20 note in his hand.
"Thanks Dad." Dylan waved the note about and sat back down.
"Here, love, take this for your dinners." George said as he gave Serena some money.
"Thanks Dad."
"And this is for some petrol."
"I don't want petrol money George." Bernie said as she went to give him the money back.
"Just put it in your pocket, lass. You are part of this family now." George smiled. "See you all later."
"Bye." They all called out as he left. Serena looked at Bernie and saw that she had tears welling up in her eyes.
"Shall we go up and get ready then." Bernie nodded her head as they went upstairs.

"Are you ok?" Serena asked as they got into the bedroom.
"Yeah it's just your Dad saying I am part of the family. It just choked me up a bit, that's all."
"Come here." Serena put her arms around Bernie and hugged her. "Let's get ready eh."
"Yeah." After they were all ready all 3 of them got into Bernie's car and went to pick Fleur up.
"I won't be a minute." Serena kissed Bernie on the cheek as she got out of the car and went to Fleur's front door.
"Yes Dylan."
"Are you going to be living with us forever now?"
"Why do you mind me living with you?"
"No, not at all. Do you love Serena?"
"Yes I do." Bernie smiled as she saw Serena and Fleur walking towards the car.
"Hi Fleur." Dylan said as Fleur sat beside him in the back.
"Hi Dylan. Hello again Bernie."
"Hello Fleur. Nice to see you again. Are we all ready to go then?"
"Yeah" Dylan and Fleur said together.
"Let's go then." Bernie started the car and drove off. Serena couldn't help but smile as she listened to Dylan and Fleur chatting in the back. Serena put her hand on Bernie's thigh. Bernie glanced at Serena as she put her hand on top of Serena's. I have never felt this happy before Bernie thought to herself as she drove down the motorway.

Chapter Text

"Serena, will you save this money that Dad gave me? I don't want to lose it." Dylan said as he reached into his pocket.
"Yes, sure." Serena turned around and took the money and put it in her handbag.
"Where are we going?" Fleur asked.
"Where going to the seaside Fleur."
"I know that Dylan. But where?"
"We are going to Blackpool Fleur." Bernie said.
"I love Blackpool. I haven't been there for ages."
"Bernie is Serena's girlfriend now." Dylan whispered in Fleur's ear.
"I know Serena told me." Fleur smiled as she got a packet of sweets out her bag and handed them round.
"I can see the tower. Serena I can see the tower." Dylan shouted as they got nearer.
"We can go up the tower if you want Dylan."
"Can we. Can we really?"
"Yeah of course."
"Fleur, will you come up the tower with me?" Dylan asked as they got out of the car and he held Fleurs hand.
"If you want me to, yes." Serena and Bernie smiled at each other as Fleur and Dylan walked in front of them hand in hand.
"Dylan thinks the world of Fleur doesn't he?"
"Yes. We all do. She's a part of the family. Just like you are now." Serena kissed Bernie and put her hand in hers as they followed Fleur and Dylan.

They all headed to the tower and got in the lift to the top.
"Bernie look you can see for miles." Dylan said excitedly as he grabbed Bernie's hand and he dragged her around.
"Are you ok?" Serena asked as she put her arm in Fleurs.
"Yes, great. You erm. You're looking very happy."
"That's because I am. I have never felt this way before Fleur. Bernie is one of kindest people I have ever met. Plus she's absolutely gorgeous. With a body to die for."
"Really. I take it you two have. You know."
"Mmm we sure have. She's amazing at that as well." Serena smirked to herself as she and Fleur started laughing.
"What has tickled you two?" Bernie asked.
"Nothing." They both said together.
"Can we go to the dungeons?"
"I'm not going to the dungeons." Fleur said nervously as she gripped Serena's arm.
"It's OK. We won't do anything you don't want to do. We'll go to the dungeons another time, Dylan. OK?"
"Ok." Dylan sighed.
"Look, why don't I take Dylan to the dungeons if he really wants to go. You and Fleur could go for a coffee and a catch up."
"Yeah I think you and Fleur should do that." Dylan jumped and down excitedly.
"Are you sure you'll be alright with trouble on your own?"
"Yes absolutely."
"I'll be good for Bernie, Serena I promise."
"You better be."
"I'll text you when we have finished."
"I love you." Bernie smiled as she kissed Serena.
"I love you too. Behave you." Serena smiled as she ruffled Dylan's hair.
"I will. Come on Bernie." Dylan held Bernie's hand as they went inside the dungeons.
"Let's go get a coffee then." Serena said as her and Fleur walked away.

"There you go." Serena put down the drinks and sat down.
"So how was your Gran?"
"The same. Still moaning. Are you looking forward to going to University after the summer?"
"Yes. It's time to get my head down and be the best Dr I can be."
"You'll be a great Dr I'm sure."
"I hope so."
"What's gonna happen with you and Bernie when you go away?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well you'll be in London. And she will be here on her own."
"She won't be on her own. She'll have my Mum and Dad, even Dylan to keep her company."
"It won't be the same though will it. I mean you've only got together. Do you think your relationship will survive?"
"Why shouldn't it. We will facetime each other every day. We'll be just fine." Serena said nervously as she took a sip of her drink. After they had their drinks they went to meet Bernie and Dylan.
"Did you enjoy that?" Fleur asked as they met them.
"Yeah it was a bit scary though."
"Did you and Fleur have a good chat?" Bernie said as she out her arm around Serena.
"Erm yes. Yes."
"Are you alright?"
"Yes, fine. You know I love you don't you? And no matter how far away from you I am. That'll never change."
"I know that. And the feeling is mutual, believe me. Right, who wants to go to the amusements?"
"Me." Both Fleur and Dylan said together.
"Come on then." Serena and Bernie followed Dylan Fleur to the amusements.

Chapter Text

The journey home was quite. Serena spent most of the journey staring out of the window. They dropped Fleur off and made there way home.
"Are you ok? You've hardly said a word since we left Blackpool." Bernie asked as they pulled up outside Serena's house.
"Yes I'm fine. I'm just tired that's all. Must be the sea air."
"I know someone else who's tired." Bernie said as she pointed to Dylan who was fast asleep in the back.
"I better wake him up." Serena said as she opened the door and got out of the car.
"No don't I'll carry him in. You lock the car up"
"Ok." Bernie opened the back door and gently got Dylan out. They walked up the drive and Serena opened the door.
"Hello have you all had a good time?" Adrienne asked as she came downstairs.
"Yeah Dylan is sparko."
"Pass him here Bernie, I'll take him up to bed." George said as he took Dylan off Bernie and took him to bed.
"Would you two like a cuppa or something a bit stronger?"
"I'd love a larger please Mum."
"Same for me please."
"You two go and sit yourself down."
"Ok." Serena and Bernie went into the lounge and sat on the sofa.
"Come here and let's have a cuddle." Bernie said as Serena moved closer as they wrapped their arms around each other. "God I love you." Bernie said as she kissed Serena on the head.
"I love you too." Serena said as a tear ran down her cheek.
"I'll be back in a tick. I need a wee." Bernie said as she left the room.
"Dylan is sparko, he never opened his eyes once." George said as he came back into the lounge and sat in his armchair. "He has behaved himself hasn't he?" George said as he looked at Serena but she didn't answer. "Earth to Serena."
"Sorry Dad what did you say."
"I said has Dylan behaved for you and Bernie?"
"Yes he's been as good as gold Dad."
"Good. Are you alright darling?"
"Yes I'm tired, that's all. I think I'll go to bed."
"Ok love. Night."
"Night Dad." Serena stood up and walked out.
"Where you going I've got your drink here." Adrienne asked as she came out of the kitchen.
"Give it to Dad. I'm going to bed."
"Alright my darling. Sweet dreams." Adrienne said as she kissed Serena on the cheek.
"Night Mum." Serena faked a smile as she ran upstairs.

"Where are you going?" Bernie asked as she came out of the bathroom.
"I'm going to bed."Serena said as she walked towards the bedroom.
"Are you going to tell me what's wrong?" Bernie asked as she followed Serena into the bedroom.
"Nothing's wrong?"
"Babe please. I'm not stupid. I know something is wrong?"
"I'm thinking about something Fleur said."
"And what did Fleur say?"
"Well she asked how we would cope when I go to university."
"Cope with what?"
"Being apart. And it got me thinking that what if while I'm at university you find a woman that you would rather be with. And I just couldn't bare that."
"Serena, you could find another woman when you go to university."
"No I couldn't. I don't want anyone else. All I want is you." Serena said with tears in her eyes and she reached out and held Bernie's hands in hers. "I love you Bernie Wolfe. I love you so much."
"I love you. You are all I want Serena."
"I promise. Now give me a kiss." Serena smiled as she leaned forward and kissed Bernie passionately.
"Make love to me." Serena said as she pulled Bernie down on top of her.

"Bernie woke up early the next morning and crept out of bed so she didn't wake Serena. She grabbed some clothes and went into the bathroom to get washed and dressed.
"Good Morning Bernie." Adrienne said as Bernie walked into the kitchen.
"You're up and about early. Even Dylan isn't up yet."
"I want to get out there early today and get looking for a job."
"There's no rush." George said as he sat down at the table.
"I want to start contributing something. Besides, it will give me something to do while Serena is away at university."
"Only if you're sure."
"I am. I better go."
"Are you not going to have some breakfast first?"
"I'll grab something while I'm out. See you later."
"Bye good luck."
"Thanks I'm gonna need it." Bernie sighed as she grabbed her car keys and left.

3 weeks later and Bernie still hadn't found a job. She pulled up outside the house and slammed the car door shut.
"Hey babe have you had a good day." Serena said as she came down the stairs.
"No I haven't." Bernie snapped as she kicked off her shoes. And stormed upstairs.
"What's the matter with you?"
"If it hasn't escaped your notice I still haven't got a job yet."
"You will get one soon I'm sure."
"You tell me Serena. How am I supposed to get a job when I have absolutely no qualifications and zero experience."
"Don't shout at me." Serena cried as she sat down on the bed.
"I'm sorry for shouting at you baby." Bernie sat beside Serena and put her arm around her.
"If you want qualifications why don't you go to college."
"Because I need money. I need a job. I want to pay my way."
"You heard what my parents said there's no rush."
"Yes there is. In one weeks time you will be in London. I need something to do. I'm gonna find a job in the next week if it kills me."
"Where are you going now?" Serena asked as Bernie walked to the door.
"To find a job." Bernie said as she ran down the stairs and out of the front door.
"Bernie, wait." Serena said as she followed Bernie out of the door but Bernie drove off.

Bernie drove around for a bit and stopped outside a pub. Fuck it she thought to herself as she got out of the car and began walking the beer garden.
"Bernie. Bernie Wolfe, is that you?" A males voice said.
"Ricky. Ricky Henderson long time no see." Bernie smiled as they gave each other a hug. "What are you doing here?"
"We are in the next town. I heard you left the fair."
"Yeah. I found a girl and my Dad didn't approve."
"Still living in the dark ages eh."
"Something like that. Sit yourself down I'll get a couple of drinks."
"Ok. Just a soft drink I'm driving."
"Sure."Ricky smiled as he went inside." So what have you been doing with yourself?" Ricky asked a few minutes later as he came back outside with the drinks.
"Trying to find a job but I'm not having much luck so far. And Serena, that's my girlfriend she's going to university in London next week. She wants to be a Dr and a surgeon."
"The girl got brains."
"Yeah she has. And I don't want to hold her back."
"Look, I have got a job for you. I always want reliable people to work for me."
"Really doing what?"
"Whatever you want. You know the fair business inside out. I could do with someone like you."
"You're serious aren't you."
"Of course I am. Look, we are in Waverly on Coopers Hill till Monday we will be leaving around Noon. If you want the job, be there for 11."
"Then where do you go?"
"Yorkshire then. God's own country."
"Sounds good."
"It is. I better get going. See you soon I hope."
"Bye and thanks." Bernie smiled as Ricky stood up and walked off. Bernie drank her coke and got back in her car.

"Is Serena upstairs?" Bernie asked Adrienne and George as she got back.
"Yeah she's watching TV?"
"Ok. Night."
"Bernie, wait a minute." Adrienne said as she got up from the sofa. "Is everything alright?"
"I hope so. Night Adrienne."
"Night Bernie love." Bernie went upstairs and saw Serena lying in bed.
"Hey where have you been? You've been gone for ages."
"I've been looking for a job, I told you." Bernie got undressed and got into bed. "And I think I've found one." Bernie said nervously.
"Really." Serena sat up and turned to Bernie. "Where. What will you be doing?"
"Well I bumped into an old friend of mine, Ricky Henderson. You're not going to like this but. He offered me a job at his fair."
"At his fair. Oh Please don't tell me you're thinking about going back to the fair?"
"I may as well. I mean you're not going to be around are you."
"When are we going to see each other?"
"Ricky said after they leave Waverly they are going to Yorkshire."
"I don't believe this you said you wanted to get out of the fair and now you tell me you are fucking going back."
"It's a job. Look Serena, I have thought about this for the last few hours. And If I stay here I will just be holding you back."
"Of course you won't."
"You can do so much better than me. You're going to be a Dr for God sake. I have no qualifications, no experience, nothing. "
"I don't think I like where you're going with this. Please tell me you're breaking up with me."
"Look, you are the most amazing woman I have ever met. But I am not good enough for you."
"Just answer the question. Are you breaking up with me?"
"I think it's for the best."
"Best for who?" Serena asked with tears in her eyes.
"For both of us. We are from two different worlds, Serena. It was never really gonna work between us."
"Yes it can. I don't understand. Why are you talking like this now. Everything was great this morning. We woke up in each other's arms. And now you want to break up with me. I thought you loved me as much as I love you."
"I do love you. But I miss it, Serena. I miss the fair."
"We can still be together. We can still see each other can't we?"
"Serena you know as much as I do that long distance relationships hardly ever work out."
"We can make it work if we both want it to." Serena said as Bernie looked down to the floor. "You don't want it to. Do you?"
"I better get packing." Bernie sighed as she stood up and started to pack her things.

Chapter Text

"Bernie please don't do this. We can make it work." Serena begged. "I love you so much."
"Listen to me" Bernie said as she put her hands on either side of Serena's face. "I love you too. I love you more than anything in this world."
"Then why are you leaving me?"
"I'm leaving you because I love you. You deserve someone better than me."
"What a load of bollocks. The only reason you're coming out with all this shit is because you can't hack it in the real world. Poor Bernie hasn't got no qualifications. You should have gone to school like everyone else."
"Well we all can't be as brainy as you." Bernie snapped as she chucked the last of the things into a bag. And went down the stairs.
"Bernie I'm sorry I didn't mean that. Please don't go." Serena cried as she followed her down the stairs.
"What's going on?" Adrienne asked as she came out of the kitchen.
"Bernie's leaving mum." Serena cried.
"Why. Are you not happy here?"
"Yes and I am truly grateful. But I've been offered a job at my friend's fair."
"You can get a different job."
"Serena there aren't any. I've been looking for weeks now and nothing. Let's face it, the fair is all that I'm good at."
“It doesn’t have to be” Bernie walked up to Serena and put her hand gently on Serena's face. "This is for the best baby. You will forget about me once you get to university. You will soon find somebody who deserves you because I certainly don't. “
“No I won't.” Serena cried.
“I will always love you Serena Wendy McKinnie. Please don't ever forget that."
"I love you too." Tears rolled down Serena's cheeks as Bernie kissed her softly, picked up her bags and walked out of the door. As the door closed Serena ran upstairs sobbing.

"Where you going love." George asked a while later as Serena put on her coat.
"I'm staying at Fleur's tonight. Is that OK?"
"Cause it is love. Do you want me to drive you round there?"
"I'll be fine."
"Come here." George held out his arm and gave his daughter a hug. "Are you gonna be alright?"
"I'll have to be. Won't i."
"If you need us just ring and I will come and pick you up OK."
"Ok. See you tomorrow." Serena grabbed her backpack and headed for the door.
"I love you."
"I love you too Dad." Serena tried to smile as she walked out the door. Ten minutes later and Serena arrived at Fleur's.
Come in sweetie." June Fleur's mum said as opened the door." Fleur told me what happened." June said as she gave Serena a hug.
"Thanks for letting me stay tonight."
"You can stay anytime you like. Your family. Go on up, she's in her room."
"Thanks." Serena picked up her bag and went upstairs. Can I come in? "She asked as she knocked on the door.
"Course you can." Fleur called out As soon as Serena saw Fleur she started to cry again. "It's alright. Everything's gonna be alright." Fleur said as they stood and held each other.
"I don't see how." Serena said as she pulled away and laid on Fleur's bed.

I know we're only young and that we didn't know each other for long. But I really thought she was the one. I would sometimes lay in bed at night watching her sleep. I used to imagine us buying a house together and getting married. Even having children one day. No chance of any of that now is there?"
"What if you fall for someone else and want them thing's with them?"
"I don't want anyone else Fleur. I've been a complete idiot haven't I?"
"No I don't think you have." Fleur smiled as she laid down beside her.
"You kind of have to say that don't you. You're my best friend."
"We are always gonna be friends aren't we?" Fleur said as she brought Serena close to her.
"Of course we are."
"And before you know it you will be the best Dr ever Miss McKinnie."
"I bloody hope so." Serena kissed Fleur on the cheek. That's what I'm going to do from now on. I'm going to concentrate on my career and nothing else. Serena thought to herself as a tear rolled down her cheek.

Chapter Text

10 years later.

Bernie pulled up outside the fun fair and couldn't help but smile as she thought of all the good times she had there. But as she got out of the car she couldn't help but think of what she'd lost. Her Serena. There wasn't a day that went by when she didn't think of Serena. The love of her life. As she walked through the fair all she could hear were the sounds of people having fun.
"Bernie, is that you? A male voice said.
"Hello Davey."
"What are you doing here?" Dave smiled as he hugged Bernie.
"I heard you were in town so I thought I would come and see you. Where's Ricky?
"He's over on the kids teacups."
"Thanks." Bernie smiled as she walked towards the ride. "Ricky Henderson long time no see." Bernie called out as she got nearer.
"Bloody hell if it isn't Bernie Wolfe." Ricky hugged her as she got closer to him. "Have you come for a job?"
"No, I'm quite happy with the job I've got, thanks."
"So how are the mean streets of Holby? Have you arrested many people yet?"
"A few."
"No sign of you know, who then?"
"No. I have only been here a few weeks though. She's properly settled down and married by now."
"She might not be."
"Serena is one of the beautiful women I have ever seen. She will most definitely be spoken for by now. You've got a queue forming."
"Yes boss." Ricky smiled as he opened the gate to let the kids on the ride.

"Daddy, Daddy wook." A little girl's voice said behind them.
"Yeah do you want to go on the teacups baby?"
"Can I do this for old time's?" Bernie asked.
"Cause you can."
"Hello sweetheart, do you want to come on the teacups?" Bernie smiled as she bent down to the little girl. The little girl nodded and squeezed her Daddy's hand.
"Come on then I'll help you on." The little girl looked up at her Daddy.
"It's OK baby. You go with the lady. I will be watching you."
"I can't Daddy."
"Why not?"
"She's a stwanger. Mummy said no talk talking to stwangers."
"My name is Bernie. What's yours?" Bernie asked as she bent down to look at the girl.
"Hello Emma." Bernie held out her hand and shook the little girl's hand. "No we aren't strangers anymore. Are you coming on the ride then?"
"Ok." Emma put her tiny hand in Bernie's as they went onto the ride. Bernie lifted her up and made sure she was safe.
"Are you ok there?"
"Yes. Fanks." Bernie smiled as she went in the booth and started the ride.
"DADDY LOOK." Emma shouted as the ride started to go by.
"I can see you baby."
After the ride had finished Bernie went over and helped the kids off the ride.
"Did you enjoy that?"
"Yeah it was good," Emma said. "Fanks. Bye Bernie."
"Bye Emma." Bernie smiled as she watched the little girl run to her Daddy. "I forgot how much the kids love the rides." Bernie said as she walked back to Ricky.
"I'm gonna have a break now do you fancy going for a coffee."
"Sounds good." Bernie said as they made their way to the refreshment truck.

Serena pulled up outside her house. She got out of the car and walked up the drive to her house. Serena was just about to put the key in the door when she heard a little voice shout.
"Hello baby. Have you had a good time with Daddy." Serena lifted the little girl up and squeezed her tightly.
"Yeah we went to a fair."
"You took her to a fair."
"Yeah why." Serena put the little girl down. "Go through and turn on the TV."
"Ok Mummy." Serena walked into the kitchen and chucked her bag on the table.
"Serena what's the matter. What have I gone wrong?"
"Nothing, Just leave it Matt."
"Is this because I took Emma to the fair?"
"Look I've just had a shitty day that's all."
"Do you want me to take Emma back to mine for the night. And let you have a quiet evening to yourself. Damien won't mind."
"I thought you and Damien were going away for a dirty weekend?"
"We are. We can bring Emma back in the morning before we go."
"It's alright. You two go off and enjoy yourselves."
"Right then I better get going." Matt said as he walked through to the lounge. "I'm going now baby. Give us a hug." Emma jumped off the sofa and hugged him.
"Bye Daddy."
"Bye sweetheart. Be good for Mummy. She's very tired."
"I will."
"I'll see you out."
"No you won't stay here and sit down. I'll see myself out." Matt smiled as he left. As Serena sat down Emma snuggled up to her.
"So how was the fair sweetie?"
"It was fun."
"Did you go on lots of rides?"
"Yeah. Bernie helped me."
"Who helped you?" Serena said as she turned to face the little girl.
"Did erm, did Bernie have blonde hair?"
"Yeah. And she is tall."
"I won't be a minute baby." Serena felt her heart beat faster as she ran out of the lounge.

Chapter Text

Serena ran into the kitchen and poured herself a glass of Shiraz and downed it in one go.
"Mummy you ok?" Emma said as she stood at the kitchen door.
"I'm OK sweetheart." Serena said as she wiped her eyes. "Have you had something to eat with Daddy?"
"Hot dog and chips."
"Come on then let's go and get you in the bath and ready for bed." Emma put her hand in Serena's as they went upstairs. "You go and get your pajamas off you bed while I run you a bath."
"Ok Mummy." Emma ran into her bedroom and came back a few seconds later. "Got them Mummy."
"Good girl." Serena helped Emma get undressed and lifted her up to put her in the bath. "Emma did the blonde lady at the fair seem happy?"
"She was smiling, Mummy." After Emma had her bath and got her pajamas on. Serena put her in bed and went downstairs. Just as she sat down on the sofa the doorbell rang.
"Who's that now." Serena muttered as she walked to the door. "Dylan what are you doing here?"
"Is it OK to stay here tonight?"
"I thought you were going to make the most of Mum and Dad being away for the weekend." Serena said as Dylan followed her in the lounge.
"I don't like it. It's too quiet. So can I stay?"
"I suppose you're wanting to stay till Sunday?"
"Can I please?"
"Course you can."
"Thanks sis." Dylan smiled as he kicked off his trainers and sat down in one of the armchairs.
"Have you eaten?"
"Not since lunch no."
"I'll make you something." Serena shook her head as she went into the kitchen.

After they had both eaten Serena and Dylan were sat in the lounge. Dylan was glued to the football while Serena was thinking about Bernie. I wonder if she is happy. Or if she is in a relationship.
"Would you keep an eye on Emma for me. I just need to pop out for a bit."
"Thanks I won't be long." Serena jumped up off the sofa grabbed her bag and car keys and ran out the door. Serena pulled up outside the fair and went to look around. After about 20 minutes of looking. Serena couldn't see Bernie at all.
"Excuse me." Serena said as she walked up to a man who clearly worked there.
"Yes love."
"Is er. Is Bernie about?"
"Yeah Bernie Wolfe. She does work here doesn't she?"
"No love. Bernie hasn't worked here for over 7 years."
"Oh."Serena sighed as she felt her heart sink."Are you sure because I was told that she was here working today."
"Bernie was here today but she wasn't really working she just came to visit us."
"I don't suppose you know where I could find her, do you?"
"No sorry. I don't know where she lives."
"Ok. Thanks anyway."
"If I do see her again do you want me to tell her you are asking after her?"
"No it's OK." God I'm an idiot Serena thought to herself as she walked back to her car. Just as Serena put the key in the ignition her phone began to ring. "Hello Ric."
"Hi Serena. I need to come back to work."
"You're joking."
"No I need your vascular talent."
"I'll be there as soon as I can."
"Thanks, you are a little angel." Serena hung up and rang Dylan.
"Hi sis."
"I have got to go to work. It's an emergency. Will you be alright with Emma?"
"Yeah, of course I will."
"Thanks. Hopefully I won't be too long. Bye."
"Bye sis." Serena put down her phone and drove to the hospital.

"So what's the emergency?" Serena asked as she walked into her office.
"A young lad has cut his arm badly while getting out of the window of a shop that he had broken into."
"Yeah the police are with him."
"Have you got a theatre slot?"
"They are trying to get me one now."
"Right let's have a look then shall we?" Serena rolled up her sleeves and walked over to the bed.
"And you are?" A policeman said as Serena stood at the bedside.
"This is my colleague. Dr McKinnie. Serena this is Jay."
"Hello Jay. Can I have a look at your arm please?" Serena asked as she put on some gloves.
"Yeah sure." Serena pulled off the dressing gently.
"That's a pretty nasty cut. Can you wiggle your fingers for me?"
"No I can't feel them."
"Ok." Serena covered his arm back up. "We'll be back in a minute. I need him in theatre now Ric before he ends up losing his arm altogether." Serena said as they walked to the nurses station.
"I call them up now."
"Ok. I will go and tell him what's happening." Serena walked back towards the patient. "Jay we need to go to theatre as soon as we can. Mr Griffin is getting you a slot."
"We can take him in now." Ric said as he stood beside Serena.
"Right then let's go."
"Have I got to come down with you?" The policeman said.
"He's gonna be put to sleep, he's hardly going anywhere."
"Well it will be one of colleague's when he comes back because my shift is nearly over."
"Whatever." Serena snapped as her and Ric wheeled the bed away.
"Bernie thank god you're here. I hate sitting in hospitals."
"Where is he?"
"They have just taken him down to theatre."
"Alright. Get yourself off home."
"See you later Bernie."
"Bye." Bernie sighed as she sat down on the chair.
