3 weeks later and Bernie still hadn't found a job. She pulled up outside the house and slammed the car door shut.
"Hey babe have you had a good day." Serena said as she came down the stairs.
"No I haven't." Bernie snapped as she kicked off her shoes. And stormed upstairs.
"What's the matter with you?"
"If it hasn't escaped your notice I still haven't got a job yet."
"You will get one soon I'm sure."
"You tell me Serena. How am I supposed to get a job when I have absolutely no qualifications and zero experience."
"Don't shout at me." Serena cried as she sat down on the bed.
"I'm sorry for shouting at you baby." Bernie sat beside Serena and put her arm around her.
"If you want qualifications why don't you go to college."
"Because I need money. I need a job. I want to pay my way."
"You heard what my parents said there's no rush."
"Yes there is. In one weeks time you will be in London. I need something to do. I'm gonna find a job in the next week if it kills me."
"Where are you going now?" Serena asked as Bernie walked to the door.
"To find a job." Bernie said as she ran down the stairs and out of the front door.
"Bernie, wait." Serena said as she followed Bernie out of the door but Bernie drove off.
Bernie drove around for a bit and stopped outside a pub. Fuck it she thought to herself as she got out of the car and began walking the beer garden.
"Bernie. Bernie Wolfe, is that you?" A males voice said.
"Ricky. Ricky Henderson long time no see." Bernie smiled as they gave each other a hug. "What are you doing here?"
"We are in the next town. I heard you left the fair."
"Yeah. I found a girl and my Dad didn't approve."
"Still living in the dark ages eh."
"Something like that. Sit yourself down I'll get a couple of drinks."
"Ok. Just a soft drink I'm driving."
"Sure."Ricky smiled as he went inside." So what have you been doing with yourself?" Ricky asked a few minutes later as he came back outside with the drinks.
"Trying to find a job but I'm not having much luck so far. And Serena, that's my girlfriend she's going to university in London next week. She wants to be a Dr and a surgeon."
"The girl got brains."
"Yeah she has. And I don't want to hold her back."
"Look, I have got a job for you. I always want reliable people to work for me."
"Really doing what?"
"Whatever you want. You know the fair business inside out. I could do with someone like you."
"You're serious aren't you."
"Of course I am. Look, we are in Waverly on Coopers Hill till Monday we will be leaving around Noon. If you want the job, be there for 11."
"Then where do you go?"
"Yorkshire then. God's own country."
"It is. I better get going. See you soon I hope."
"Bye and thanks." Bernie smiled as Ricky stood up and walked off. Bernie drank her coke and got back in her car.
"Is Serena upstairs?" Bernie asked Adrienne and George as she got back.
"Yeah she's watching TV?"
"Bernie, wait a minute." Adrienne said as she got up from the sofa. "Is everything alright?"
"I hope so. Night Adrienne."
"Night Bernie love." Bernie went upstairs and saw Serena lying in bed.
"Hey where have you been? You've been gone for ages."
"I've been looking for a job, I told you." Bernie got undressed and got into bed. "And I think I've found one." Bernie said nervously.
"Really." Serena sat up and turned to Bernie. "Where. What will you be doing?"
"Well I bumped into an old friend of mine, Ricky Henderson. You're not going to like this but. He offered me a job at his fair."
"At his fair. Oh Please don't tell me you're thinking about going back to the fair?"
"I may as well. I mean you're not going to be around are you."
"When are we going to see each other?"
"Ricky said after they leave Waverly they are going to Yorkshire."
"I don't believe this you said you wanted to get out of the fair and now you tell me you are fucking going back."
"It's a job. Look Serena, I have thought about this for the last few hours. And If I stay here I will just be holding you back."
"Of course you won't."
"You can do so much better than me. You're going to be a Dr for God sake. I have no qualifications, no experience, nothing. "
"I don't think I like where you're going with this. Please tell me you're breaking up with me."
"Look, you are the most amazing woman I have ever met. But I am not good enough for you."
"Just answer the question. Are you breaking up with me?"
"I think it's for the best."
"Best for who?" Serena asked with tears in her eyes.
"For both of us. We are from two different worlds, Serena. It was never really gonna work between us."
"Yes it can. I don't understand. Why are you talking like this now. Everything was great this morning. We woke up in each other's arms. And now you want to break up with me. I thought you loved me as much as I love you."
"I do love you. But I miss it, Serena. I miss the fair."
"We can still be together. We can still see each other can't we?"
"Serena you know as much as I do that long distance relationships hardly ever work out."
"We can make it work if we both want it to." Serena said as Bernie looked down to the floor. "You don't want it to. Do you?"
"I better get packing." Bernie sighed as she stood up and started to pack her things.
