Left Behind

Work Text:

Falling into bed with Wei Wuxian was a mistake that Jiang Cheng promised himself to never commit again. What they had a couple of years ago was a fling. Something fleeting and temporary, that was bound to end despite Jiang Cheng’s futile attempts to hold onto it for as long as possible. Jiang Cheng knew from the beginning that what they had was nothing serious, in fact, Wei Wuxian seemed to never want Jiang Cheng to forget that. They would be laying in bed in post-coital bliss and Wei Wuxian would practically kick him out of bed with some excuse about having to wake up early the next day, something they both knew was bullshit; Wei Wuxian never woke up early.

After Wei Wuxian ended things the only thing Jiang Cheng wanted to do was brood in his apartment about losing what he could’ve had and thinking over and over about the what if’s. Would Wei Wuxian even accept his feelings if he had confessed them? In some idealized fantasy of his, Jiang Cheng would think that, yes, he would. But reality has a penchant for punching you in the gut when you're already down, and Jiang Cheng knew that Lan Wangji has always been the apple of Wei Wuxian’s eyes. The longing looks and deep sighs Wei Wuxian used to make when in the Lan’s presence should’ve been the number one sign, but Jiang Cheng had always been a romantic deep down, and maybe he hoped that one day those feelings would be shifted towards him. And considering how things usually go for him you can deduce that this, in fact, did not happen.

But despite the abrupt ending of their so-called relationship two years ago, Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian’s friendship was not affected significantly. Yes, Wei Wuxian did leave him because he fell for Lan Wangji, but Wei Wuxian would annoyingly still seek out Jiang Cheng’s company constantly. Which is what brings him here, standing in his front door wearing purple pikachu patterned pajamas looking at a glitter-covered, scantily dressed and wine drunk Wei Wuxian.

“No” said Jiang Cheng.

“Aw come on A-Cheng! You never wanna hang out these days! It’s just for a couple of hours I swear I’ll have you home by midnight, Princess.” Wei Wuxian grinned.

And a normal Jiang Cheng on a regular day would’ve already been ready to go the minute Wei Wuxian showed up at his door, leaving anything he was doing behind to begrudgingly follow all of Wei Wuxian’s whims. But today Jiang Cheng had already made up his mind that he was going to stay at home and drink a responsible amount of alcohol like functional adults do. Getting black out drunk just did not fit into his schedule anymore.

“Wei Wuxian, we’re not in college anymore you can just show up here and try to drag me out to some bar, I have to go to work in the morning.” Jiang Cheng spat out with finality.

“Wei Ying,” came a voice from behind Wei Wuxian. Oh, great. Now he had to deal with them both.

“Ah Lan Zhan, help me convince this fuddy-duddy here to go bar hopping with us”. Lan Wangji just fixed him with his signature blank stare. Jiang Cheng sighed.

“Wei Wuxian, have fun, okay? I’m not going and that’s final”. Jiang Cheng caught what seemed to be a look of disappointment in Wei Wuxian’s eyes before it disappeared into his usual grin.

“Aiya! My A-Cheng has become such an old man,” he sighed wistfully and hooked his arm with Lan Wangji’s, dragging him off to the elevators.

“See you A-Cheng! Just don’t get mad when you see how much fun we had without you!”

“Yeah alright” Jiang Cheng was beginning to close the door before he, again, caught Lan Wangji’s stare which now seemed disapproving, not that he could read that man’s expressions very well. Lan Wangji looked away and Jiang Cheng closed the door, moved to the kitchen and poured himself a glass of wine.

He sat on his couch to contemplate, before a thought raced through his brain. He never bothered to find out why Wei Wuxian was out drinking in the middle of the week. Jiang Cheng opened his phone’s calendar and, yeah, Jiang Cheng remembered why he was opposed to going out today, why he felt like wallowing in his feelings alone. A nice little banner on the date (put there by Wei Wuxian himself) announced that today marked his and Lan Wangji’s two year anniversary. The same date that Wei Wuxian left him.
