    Summary

Spiritual Successor to "It Came From the Vents." Gordon Freeman has spent three years trying to stabilize the AIs he befriended after a disastrous end to a military project. He's stolen company property, ignored his family, and neglected himself in hopes of success. Now that he's made progress, it's becoming increasingly apparent that one of the AIs in question may not be a program at all. No one can say for certain what this revelation will lead to, but one thing's for sure: HR is going to have a field day with this one.

I don't have control over fandoms, so I don't know how or why things trend. But if I could take a guess, I would say this is THE seminal work in the HLVRAI fandom. This is the big one, the fic every fan (especially Frenrey fans) HAS to read. This is the story that years from now, fans will remember in the middle of the night and search through old saves to find and reread, to fall back into a world that maybe will have been mostly forgotten by then. This story is built to last.

I can imagine myself years ago, reading along with every update and printing out each chapter from the high school chem lab computer, passing it around the corridors to be shared and gushed over among friends at lunch. Not to say this story is juvenile- far from it. But it harkens back to that time of community and sharing for me, of being so enthusiastic about a story that I would risk detention for using so much ink and paper on something inappropriate for school, because I simply HAD to have a hard copy. This story - it's important. It's not just good, it is a shining example of "transformative fiction." It takes the source material and builds upon it, making it stronger and better, breathing fresh life into it.

Look, I don't know who, if anyone, goes through my bookmarks or recommendations. Maybe no one will ever read this note at all. But if you are reading this- click the link and read this story. You won't regret it.
