Chapter 1: Floppy Ears
Under the warm summer sun, dozens of bunnies hopped about in the grassy meadows of the Gusu Lan Sect.
They were fed carrots and cabbage, the freshest food that could possibly be found. Water was provided in multiple small bowls every day, and they were free to jump about but given shelter during the rain. In other words, they had a perfectly happy life.
A little far away from the herd of rabbits were two bunnies.
One was pure white, a white ribbon over its tiny head.
The other one was pure black, its bright red eyes shining under the warm sunlight with a red ribbon tied to its ears as it hopped back and forth beside the other bunny.
A hop forward, then a hop to the back, its tiny little paws trying to catch the flopping ears of a sleeping Lan Bunji.
Wei Bunxian, the black bunny, always took this time when Lan Bunji, the pure white and regal looking rabbit, was sleeping to play with his ears. Especially because whenever they were far away from the herd and alone, it would flop forward and back, keeping Wei Bunxian intrigued and excited.
This happens every late morning, and sometimes a few brave bunnies will try to approach the cute, active, black bunny.
However, even before the Wei Bunxian can notice his friends had come over, Lan Bunji would open its sharp golden eyes and glare at the bunnies, daring them to come close. Of course, they were scared of the angry bunny who was known to bite any bunny or human aside from Wei Bunxian, hence, left the premises and the two bunnies alone.
Too bad, naive and excited Wei Bunxian never notices that Lan Bunji is merely pretending to sleep, flopping its long ears to keep his attention and make sure he is entertained enough that Bunxian would stay still in one spot, not running around the whole meadow and getting all messy.
Again, Lan Bunji closes its eyes, pretending sleep as its nose twitches happily, listening to the soft padding of grass as he flops his ears again, Wei Bunxian's cute little paws hopping all around him.
For the bunny, this was the best life it could have.
Every day is a busy day for Lan Bunji.
Today is no exception.
Above their heads the sun shines brightly when Lan Bunji is out in the meadow doing his rounds, checking that no bunny is making trouble.
Most bunnies were happily grazing the grass or basking under the sun, hopping softly around and playing in their gentle, quiet way as their owners did.
Satisfied, Lan Bunji moves away from the opening and hops up towards the small hill to the side. He realizes he has seen every bunny living within the Cloud Recesses, but there was one black bunny left he has yet to find. Worried and a little suspicious, he hurries his little hops, nose twitching as he looks behind a bush or two, picking a red berry on his way, nibbled in his mouth.
It would be a treat to negotiate the black bunny from causing trouble.
Lan Bunji is surprised, however, when he reaches the top of the small hill.
Surrounded by tiny, yellow and white flowers, a few bushes and trees as shade, he spots Wei Bunxian laying on the grass on its back, sprawled unmannerly as always, twitching its tiny paw in the air as he naps.
The scene makes Lan Bunji pause, staring at the scene silently.
He turns around, fully intending to let the bunny sleep alone in peace when he hears a rustle. A glance back, and Bunji’s eyes land on him just in time to see Wei Bunxian sneeze, his nose twitching in the cold Gusu air.
Ears twitching once, twice, Lan Bunji pads over silently, sitting down next to Wei Bunxian.
When the black bunny doesn’t wake up, he scoots closer, letting Wei Bunxian sleep warm and cuddly next to his soft fur. The black bunny stirs with its mouth opening and closing a few times, but it is still fast asleep.
Lan Bunji throws his long, floppy ear over him.
Golden bunny eyes look at the sleeping bunny before it lowers its head to put the red berry down, closing his own eyes as he takes a nap of his own after a long day of hard work, keeping Wei Bunxian warm in this cold afternoon.
Surely, Wei Bunxian would be hungry when he woke up.
Wei Bunxian is on a mission.
Every time he tries to go on an adventure, either their owner will come to pick him up and put him back with his herd, or Lan Bunji will come to drag him back, nipping at his ears and the back of his nape.
But this time, he plans to get farther than the first hill!
His plan for this trip was to their owner’s bedroom, which he remembered the way to back when he had brought him and Lan Bunji back once, but he had never been able to get there alone since.
To get there, he would need to cross the hill, jump through the bushes, hop around a huge pond filled with fish, and pass by the garden.
Ready to start making trouble, Wei Bunxian innocently twitches its nose, hopping around the herd and watching Lan Bunji hop slowly about, doing his usual ‘thing’ where he looked out to make sure no other bunny would make trouble. It was silly, he thinks. After all, Wei Bunxian was the only bunny who would make trouble.
If he had just kept his eyes on him only, his work would be so much easier.
But he wants to succeed, so he should be glad Lan Bunji does not pay his full attention to him at all times, wanting to jump and hop about, making a messy trail like his instincts tell him to do.
So, when Lan Bunji was distracted with eating a piece of lettuce he had gotten moments ago from the students, Wei Bunxian takes this chance to start dashing up the hill, hopping and jumping, happily cheering with his bunny ears as it perked up, waving in the air once he reached the top.
He was lucky enough to reach the bottom of the other end too!
All he had to do now was jump blindly into the bushes and make a straight line towards the pond. But as soon as he hopped towards the bush, a nip on the back of his neck caught him in a steel grip.
Wei Bunxian deflates, hanging off of Lan Bunji’s mouth as his little legs flop down, waving in the air and dragging a little as he is dragged back towards the hill, back up and down towards where their home was.
He had plenty of time to try his escape again.
Chapter 4: A Rainy Day
It's been a while because I was doing daily posting of my other wangxian fic, but I'm back with another chapter -u-
A drop of rain splashes onto a pink nose, splashing over a soft face.
Startled, Wei Bunxian jumps and twitches its nose with a wild shake of his head, turning and hopping back into the little hut their owner made for them.
Once he settled and was no longer hopping about in order to shake off the water, he moves back towards the entrance.
Bobbing up and down on its legs, sitting right below the edge of the roof, he puts one paw out from the boundary, running back in when it gets wet before he goes back, sticking out another paw before it got dampened by big droplets of water, jumping away quickly and dashing back in. This cycle continues three more times, the last with his nose, cringing when water splatters to his beady eyes.
Wei Bunxian was bored, that's what it was.
Further inside, Lan Bunji is sitting calmly, eyes closed and meditating, almost falling into a nap with the gentle thuds of big rain droplets on the wooden roof, the smell of wet grass delicious but it was not yet time to eat. The rain was nice after a hot afternoon, cooling their home and watering the grass. Surely, by tomorrow, there will be more for them to nibble on.
One particular bunny, he is sure, will have plenty of grass to roll and play on.
Hearing the rustle of dried grass near him, he opens his eyes to take a peek, only to see a very wet Wei Bunxian looking at him with big, innocent eyes.
A few more rounds of wetting various parts of his paws, nose, and tail, Wei Bunxian finally decided to jump right over the border of the roof, hopping high and jumping around wet grass and rolling in delight.
That's why he was so dirty with grass all over.
Fur dripping and matted against his body, Wei Bunxian was shivering as he moved closer. Lan Bunji merely stared as Wei Bunxian tried to snuggle up.
But instead of cuddling close, Lan Bunji got up and moved further into their home to a corner, away from Wei Bunxian.
Seeing this, Wei Bunxian deflates, flopping out onto the cold wooden floor, closing his eyes and curling up to keep warm. He couldn't help when he sneezes, nose twitching and buried further into his own fur, shivering and flopping both his ears down over himself for coverage.
He tries to sleep, but it is too cold.
When he is about to give up and try to find somewhere else that's warmer, a whole stack of hay suddenly tumbles all over his body, warm and smelling of the afternoon sun, soaking up the water covering him.
Now that his job was done, Lan Bunji takes his place next to a happy Wei Bunxian as always with a proud look, flopping his long ear over the black bunny and his bundle of hay to keep him warm.
The rain was chilling, but if Lan Bunji is here with him, Wei Bunxian will never have to worry about feeling cold.
