Friends for Gays

Work Text:

It felt like there was a weight on his shoulders and another in his chest.

Kirishima felt like he was living a lie. But there was always the dread of being rejected nagging at him from the back of his mind. He finally had great friends. He didn’t want to jeopardize what he’d built with them.

“What’s got you thinking so hard, Shitty Hair?”

Kirishima snapped out of his own thoughts and was brought back to reality. The self-proclaimed Bakusquad was hanging out in Sero’s dorm with each of them on their own perches.

Kirishima’s head snapped to look at the source of the voice and found Bakugou’s gaze. It didn’t surprise Kirishima that it was Bakugou as no one else used that nickname for him. Warmth rushed to the redhead’s face as he remembered the second part of his secret.

He had a huge, fat crush on one Bakugou Katsuki.

“Nothing too important,” Kirishima deflected. He chuckled a bit forcefully before trying to listen back in on the conversation.

Kaminari, Sero, and Ashido were talking about something that had happened at school today. It was something about Hagakure and Ojirou. He’d heard that they had started dating. They seemed happy together at least.

Kaminari grunted and leaned his head back. “What’s wrong now?” Sero asked with a snort.

“I tried to ask Jirou out, and she turned me down.” The brighter blond pouted. Sero tried to cheer him up while Ashido only laughed at his expense.

“She’s already got her eyes on someone else,” she said through a laugh.

“It doesn’t make my pain lessen or mean any less,” Kaminari whined.

“Will you just fucking shut it, Pikachu?” Bakugou growled. “We don’t wanna hear you whining all the damn time.”

“What about you, then?” Kaminari shot back. “Is there anyone you’re interested in, Sparky Sparky Boom Man?”

Bakugou was quiet for a moment before grunting out, “‘S none of your damn business.”

“Oo, so there is someone!” Ashido squealed. “Who is it?”

“I said it’s none of your damn business, Raccoon Eyes!” Bakugou hissed.

“Maybe it’s Uraraka!”

“Or Kyouka. They’ve been getting closer this year.”

Kaminari and Ashido continued to brainstorm, and Kirishima could feel Bakugou getting angrier and angrier. Kirishima was unsure of how to defuse the boy at his side. He felt like if he tried to do anything, he would just make it worse.

“Will you both just shut the fuck up?!” Bakugou screeched.

“We’re just curious, Blasty. That’s all,” Kaminari argued. “Oh! Maybe she’s in class B!”

Bakugou growled, and his clenched fists began popping. “Uh, guys?” Kirishima tried. “Maybe you should just let it go…”

“No, Kirishima,” Bakugou barked. “If these guys want to be nosy assholes, I can tell them what they want to know.” He leveled a glare at Kaminari and Ashido. They both bowed their heads to avoid Bakugou’s gaze.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to,” Sero intervened. “We’re not going to make you tell us anything, Bakugou.”

“No, they’ve already pestered me about it enough,” the explosive blond growled. “Might as well satiate their annoying fucking curiosity.”

Everyone brought their attention to Bakugou, and Kirishima felt like he was holding his breath. He figured Bakugou was straight or just not interested in romance at all. He had already come to terms that he didn’t have a chance and that his feelings were one-sided. There was no reason to get his hopes up.

“You’re both completely wrong,” Bakugou continued. “I’m fucking gay, you damn idiots.”

Kirishima felt like his heart stopped. Did he just hear Bakugou correctly?

It seemed like Kirishima wasn’t the only one doubting what he just heard.

“You all look fucking stupid. Close your damn mouths!” Bakugou crosses his arms and looked away from the rest of the Bakusquad.

Kaminari was the first to speak up. “Wow,” he muttered. “Didn’t know you had it in you, Blasty.”

Sero snacked Kaminari’s arm. “You’re one to talk.”

Kirishima cocked an eyebrow at that. “What do you mean, Sero?” the redhead asked.

“Oh! I’m bi,” Kaminari replied.

It felt like Kirishima was slapped across the face this time. How blind was he to his friends exactly?

“Why do you look so surprised, Kiri?” Ashido asked with a grin.

“I feel like an awful friend,” he choked out. “Apparently, I don’t give my friends enough attention. How did I not know?”

“We weren’t exactly trying to announce it to the world, Shitty Hair,” Bakugou said through a chuckle.

“Yeah,” Mina added. “The whole world doesn’t need to know our business.”

Kirishima looked over at his pink friend. “You too, Mina?”

“Yup!” she replied. “I’m pansexual.”

Kirishima looked to Sero and cocked an eyebrow again. The gangly boy smirked and nodded.

“I’m ace,” he responded, “and panromantic.”

And that was what finally broke Kirishima. He started crying…well, more like gross sobbing. He couldn’t stop it, and he figured that he looked crazy.

“Woah, woah, bro,” Kaminari said. “If it really upsets you that much—”

“No, no! It’s not that,” Kirishima interrupted. “I just feel like a huge idiot.”

Bakugou snorted. “How is that any different from any other day?”

Kirishima laughed wetly. The sobbing died down, but tears still ran down his cheeks. “I was so afraid that I wasn’t going to be accepted, and here are all of you coming out to the group.” He paused to steady himself and take a deep breath. “I’m gay.”

Ashido burst into laughter, cackling wolfishly and falling back into the bed. Kaminari and Sero smiled at him, and Bakugou just looked shocked.

“Honey, I’ve known since junior high,” Ashido choked out.

“Welcome to the club, bro,” Kaminari added, holding out a fist. Kirishima sniffled, smiles, and fist bumped his friend.

“I can’t believe you didn’t notice Denki and Hanta being all gross with their relationship,” Ashido added, now finished with laughing and laying so that she was looking at the rest of them upside down. “Denks will take any chance to make out with Hanta.”

“But weren’t you saying that you were trying to ask out Jirou?” Kirishima asked.

“Oh,” Kaminari squeaked out. “I’m also polyamorous.”

“Denki has too much love to give to just use it all on me,” Sero said through a laugh.

Bakugou has been silent since Kirishima made his contribution to the conversation. Did the fact that Kirishima was also gay make Bakugou uncomfortable?

“You okay?” Kirishima asked.

Ashido snorted. “He’s just having a gay panic,” she teased.

“Shut it, Raccoon Eyes!” the explosive blond growled back.

“Am I wrong though?”

Bakugou tightened his crossed arms over his chest and angrily mumbled to himself. Ashido giggled and smirked knowingly.

“If all you’re going to do is make fun of me,” Bakugou hissed, “then I’m fucking leaving.”

The blond stood up and promptly left the room, stomping out and slamming the door. The room was left in an awkward silence. They were all used to Bakugou’s outbursts, but this felt different.

“He always lets people push his buttons too easily,” Kaminari joked a bit forcefully.

“Maybe I should go talk to him,” Kirishima said.

Before any of them could say anything, Kirishima stood up and left the room. He wanted to make sure his best friend (okay, one of them) was alright. Yes, maybe his crush was fueling his worry, but that wasn’t necessarily bad, was it?

The redhead soon found himself at the door next to his own and knocked a bit hesitantly. “Go away,” was yelled from the inside. He wasn’t going to let Bakugou off that easily.

“It’s just me, Bakugou,” Kirishima muttered through a chuckle.

“I don’t care,” he responded. “Go away, Shitty Hair.”

Kirishima laughed to himself and checked if the door was locked. It wasn’t. He walked into the room and found himself plunged into darkness. Barely any light was coming in through the covered window, but it was enough to see the blond balled up on his bed. His head popped up at the sound of his door opening, but he simply rolled his eyes and buried his head back in his arms.

Kirishima day next to his now round friend and mumbled, “I’ve never seen you so riled up by Mina’s teasing. What’s going on, bro?”

The room was silent for a good bit before Bakugou decided to speak up. “She knows too much sometimes, and I was done with her bullshit.”

Kirishima tentatively put a hand on Bakugou’s shoulder. “Mind filling me in?” he asked gently.

Bakugou heaved out a laugh. “Unless you want to hate me.”

The redhead moved his friend so that they were facing each other, Bakugou’s face was in Kirishima’s hands, and Bakugou was looking at him. “I don’t think that’s possible,” he argued with a smile.

Bakugou looked away for a moment before sighing and meeting Kirishima’s gaze again. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” the blond replied.

Kirishima waited patiently while Bakugou found his words. He had let go of the blond’s face so that he could think and not be forced to look at Kirishima the whole time. When Bakugou did finally speak, Kirishima made sure that he was giving his friend his full and undivided attention.

“Raccoon Eyes was right about me having a ‘gay panic’ as she put it,” Bakugou muttered. “I’ve had a crush on this one guy ever since our first year at UA. I just didn’t think he would be interested in me. I was convinced that he was straight for so long.”

Kirishima felt all of his confidence leave him. Yes, Bakugou was gay, but he still had no chance. “Have…have you ever thought of telling him. Well, I’m sure you have, but from what I understand, it sounds like you know now that he’s not straight. Maybe you have a chance?”

His own words felt like acid in his mouth. How could he encourage his long time crush to go after someone else? ‘Because it would make him happy,’ he thought.

Bakugou cracked a smile and leaned closer to Kirishima. “Maybe I do,” he said, his smile morphing into a smirk. “He’s a bit of an idiot, but it can be adorable.”

Bakugou’s proximity was flustering Kirishima, and he was afraid that the former would notice. “Well then, uh, who is he, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“You.”

The blond closed the distance between them and met Kirishima’s lips with his own. The latter was shocked for a moment before reciprocating the kiss. It was far from perfect, but it was perfect to Kirishima.

When they finally pulled away from each other, Kirishima couldn’t keep the smile off of his face. “That makes a lot of sense,” he muttered, his eyes still partially closed.

“You’re such an idiot,” Bakugou teased, “but now you’re my idiot.”

Kirishima kissed the blond again before asking, “Are we going to tell the others?”

Bakugou locked Kirishima in an embrace. “Later,” he grumbled. “Right now, I want you to fucking cuddle me.”

And Kirishima was more than happy to oblige.
