Bates couldn’t stop smiling as he went to Lord Grantham’s dressing room. He knew it had been a throwaway comment, but Robert’s words kept echoing through his head, “because I’ve certainly missed you.”
Bates knocked, then entered. Robert smiled.
“Bates, my fellow, you seem cheerful.”
“I’m pleased you’re home, m’lord.” Bates smiled back. He had missed the warmth that came to Robert’s blue eyes when they met Bates’ grey. “You said you’d missed me.”
“I meant every word of it, Bates,” he stepped closer, touching Bates’ hip. “In fact, let me show you just how much I have missed you.”
