KING MINOS

(Righteously)

As custom, the sacrifices from Athens will have one night to feast and rest before going to the labyrinth.

THESEUS (Whispering to other sacrifices)

Feast and rest, he makes it seem like this is supposed to be an honor.

Ariadne looks toward Theseus, overhearing him. King Minos carries on talking, not noticing what else is happening.

KING MINOS CONT'D

To be sure the cowards do not try to run from their duty, the room where you will rest will be locked, you will remain chained, and the guards present will remain your escorts until you enter the labyrinth.

THESEUS

Cowards? He is the coward, the demented king, feeding humans to a monster to keep his power. (speaking up to Minos) Is it true that should a person put in the labyrinth find their way to the end, they will be free?

KING MINOS

That is a part of the contract made with Athens. For the sacrifices to have a chance. Unlike my son did.

Theseus looks determined, Ariadne seems contemplating.

KING MINOS CONT’D

The mistress of the Labyrinth will be the one to lead you to the Labyrinth and be the one to see if any had reached the end or met their end in three days’ time. You will follow her to the feast.

ARIADNE

ARIADNE

What would you do? should you reach the end? This would not end. King Minos would likely just order for your king to send him a different sacrifice in your place.

THESEUS Then I will end the horrors completely before leaving this kingdom with my people.

ARIADNE

No one can truly find their way. the maker made it, so it is ever changing. No one has made it through the labyrinth alive.

Theseus interested, focuses on Ariadne.

ARIADNE (CONT’D)

I need your oath in turn.

THESESUS

My oath, why should I give my oath to one who leads us to death.

ARIADNE

I would also lead you to victory in your mission. I may be mistress of the labyrinth, that only means I watch over it and its inhabitants.

THESEUS

what is it you want?

ARIADNE

My sister wants to leave this kingdom and our fathers’ rule. Take her with you when you leave, and I will help you find your way. you can lead the others out with you and avoid the- the monster completely. DO not kill it, take only my sister with you and your people as you leave, promise me this.

THESEUS

how would the monster be avoided.

ARIADNE

I will distract him, his focus will not be you or yours, you can slip by unnoticed.

THESEUS

you have my oath.

ARIADNE

this will lead you to where you desire. Hold it tightly in your hand and will your destination, only do this in the labyrinth and don’t let anyone else see it.

Ariadne, sister please you’re not acting like yourself. I know it meant a lot to you but isn’t this better. It was a monster there’s no way it could live outs-

ARIADNE

Asterion was no monster!

PHAEDRA

Well, Prince Theseus is a hero, not any hero either but a son of Zeus. If he decided to kill ASTERION, then he saw Asterion as a monster and that is confirmation enough for me.

Ariadne angered, turns from her sister and faces the sea. Time passes as they come closer to a new island.
