An adorable, insightful, touching little gem of storytelling. There are too many golden sentences in this to quote, something to chew on in every passing passage. The little monologues about the ways of kindness -- about the repeats of tragedies and bad decisions, about the ordinance of people in the then-obscure scheme of tangled webs, in unexecuted prevention of tragedies, the sometimes faultlessness of bad decisions; about the lasting scars of schoolboy malice and wartime crimes, daggers cutting more than one generation, of seeing shadows of history in younger, unblemished faces, the unthinking prejudice of past thrown onto the children in repeat, of old grudges and new reconciliation, and newfound security that marks the years passed by; about the open, easy way Harry's parents bridged and cast aside the fear and dubiety between the Muggle and Wizarding world, how subtly they let him grow closer to his roots under their nurturing curiosity, their love and consolation as Harry grows fast, unstoppably fast, and leaves on the Hogwarts Express in September; Sirius and Remus' fierce devotion and defense towards Harry, and the little time they give themselves on monthly moons after being apart for so long; Sirius' two years in Azkaban and pretending to be a dog most of the year; and most importantly, Harry's incandescent happiness through all of this that is so much more consolation to the people around him who care than what he could have known. Anyways -- this is such a positive, hopeful chef-d'œuvre in an ungrudging, uncomplicated storyteller's voice. I love the dogfather.
