Feb 14th
The bell jingles above the door of the little bakery shop where Jungkook is working, the clock already hits 11 PM, another hour until Valentine’s day over, another hour until he can go back home into the embrace of his lover. Jungkook inhales as he puts on his best smile to greet the lanky guy who just entered his shop.
“Welcome,” Jungkook really thought there won’t be any more people coming, after all there’s not much left until today’s over but his hunch doesn’t always right.
The man appears to be in a rush, he’s sweating despite the cold weather, a little breathless as he approaches the counter where Jungkook is standing behind it.
He looks over at the displayed cakes, there are not many left, just a small sized blueberry cheesecake, some chocolate and strawberry truffles along with a few pieces madeleine.
“Give me everything,” the man says as he finally looks up at Jungkook, pale skin, heavy voice, a little shorter than Jungkook, probably as short as Jimin (Jungkook smiles a little).
The man just stands there watching Jungkook dreaming inside his own little head before he clears his throat when another second ticks by and Jungkook hasn’t move to pack his order.
“Everything, sir?” Jungkook finally asks when his snaps back and starts rushing to fold some boxes for the cakes.
“Yes, all of this, I’m not really sure what he likes, can you hurry, I’m kind of late,” his words are rushed with little spacing between them as if he is rapping and it’s hard for Jungkook to keep track on what he’s saying while he’s busy packing the cakes so he just nods, hands moving in practiced ease. When Jungkook is about to close the box, the man speaks up, “hey, can u write something on it?”
“I can’t write on the cake because it’s a cheesecake but I can write something on a chocolate and put it on here, is that okay sir?”
“Yeah, yeah, that’s fine,” he nods a few times, scratching his nape before he speaks again, or more like a whisper which Jungkook really, really tries to hear but fail to do so. “Excuse me sir?” Jungkook even has to lean his body slightly forward to be able to hear the man.
The man clears his throat, embarrassment is clearly written on his face, “I love you, Kim Taehyung.”
Jungkook can’t help but chuckle, he nods as he starts writing neatly on a piece of chocolate, while he waits for it to dry, Jungkook starts packing the chocolate truffles and the madeleine.
Before jungkook even opens his mouth the card is already presented in front of him, really, the man seems to be in a grave hurry so Jungkook swipes the card and finish the transaction as fast as he can.
“Good luck, sir,” Jungkook manages to say before he closes the door with a little ‘thank you!’ flying out of his mouth.
Jungkook smiles at the reminiscence of what happened in this store 4 years ago, on Valentine’s day when he talked to Jimin for the first time, on the day when Jungkook think as the turning point of his life.
It was chilly, and the clock just hits 7. The road was already packed with couples. The store was busy with people coming and going to buy cake for their loved one. Jungkook just finished packing a cake for a man who said he’s going to propose for his boyfriend of 5 years today. A tall man with pretty dimples was glowing in excitement as he asked Jungkook to write sweet message on top of the double chocolate cake he took about 20 minutes to pick, ‘Jung Hoseok, please spend the rest of your life with me?’ it said, Jungkook felt giddy even writing about it, hoped it’d go well for the man.
Another sound of the bell jingles was heard. A man came inside, eyes wandering here and there before it settled on Jungkook. A pretty pair of dark brown eyes, soft plump lips, nose and cheeks were red from the cold outside. His steps were hesitant, a little shy that Jungkook couldn’t help but think of how adorable this man was.
“May I help you sir?” Jungkook put on his smile, couldn't really understand why did he suddenly felt excited.
The man gave back a smile to Jungkook and Jungkook was there holding onto everything he got and tried not to suddenly confess his love to the man he just met.
“I-umm, I’m looking for a cake…” he said, voice sweet and soft like the soft whip cream that Jungkook loved.
“There’s plenty here,” Jungkook didn’t really mean to be sarcastic or anything it just came out like that but he regretted it as soon as he saw the man cowering, even more embarrassed than before.
“What would you like sir?” Jungkook had never back pedaled so fast in his life, he just wanted to wipe the frown on the man’s face with another smile.
“What would you recommend?” He asked, this time Jungkook beamed in excitement.
“I personally really like sacher torte, sir.”
“Sa-sach- what?” Jimin tilts his head to the side, and Jungkook could hear his own heart exploding from the cuteness. God, this year’s Valentine’s day was especially hard.
“Sacher torte, basically it’s a chocolate cake with apricot jam in it,” Jungkook tried to hide the shaking in his voice as Jimin was looking at him curiously, with his lips pouting and a frown on his forehead.
“You like that?” he asked once again.
“Yes, it’s my personal taste, you’re free to choose anything, we have plenty of varieties here,” Jungkook pointed at the glass display counter beside him.
“Sarcher torte please,” Jimin smiled this time, sounding so sure and jungkook couldn’t do anything else besides rushing to pull out the medium sized sacher torte and started packing it.
“Do you want to write something?”
“Actually yes, uhm,” Jimin paused, giving himself sometimes to think, “today you work hard too, happy Valentine’s day.”
Jungkook would be lying if he said he didn’t feel a little bitter knowing that the cake was for someone else, that the simple yet sweet massage was also for someone else, he really needed to stop having this stupid instant crush on the guy.
“That will be 25,000 won sir,” Jungkook said, and soon he received a card from him and started typing the bill. But then he jumped in shock when a high pitched voice suddenly coming out of the man.
“IT’SFORYOUHAPPYVALENTINESDAYJUNGKOOK!” Jungkook didn’t even had a chance to lift his head before the bell jiggled again and the man disappeared before the glass door.
It was for him, the cake, the message, it was all for him and oh- he left his card.
That night his coworkers wouldn’t stop teasing him about the cute guy who gave Jungkook the sacher torte. When jungkook said how did that guy figured his name, Seokjin the barista chimed in, “first we have name tags Jungkook, second, that guy has been coming here almost every day but too scared to approach you so he just orders coffee and avoids the cake section with all his might it was kind of cute.”
Jungkook berated himself for not even noticing the man, he was probably too busy baking and attending the register that he didn’t have time to look around.
Feb 15th
The man back the next day, head hanging low and fingers played with the hem of his grey sweater. Jungkook waited excitedly behind the register as the man walked up slowly toward him. He knew he would be back soon because he needed to take his card back.
“Uhm, sorry…” his voice was low, eyes darting everywhere but Jungkook, cheeks burned in red and it was distracting how he kept biting his lips.
“I-I think I left my card here yesterday,” he scratched his neck, eyes finally meeting Jungkook though he averted it not even a second later.
Jungkook just beamed at him, awe-struck at the adorable man who stood before him.
“Yeah, you did,” Jungkook answered, tilting his head to the side so he could take a good look at the man’s face.
“Thank you for the cake,” Jungkook said, and the man whipped his face so fast it startled Jungkook.
“Yeah, you’re welcome,” this time, there was a small smile tugging on his lips, very faint but Jungkook could see it.
“But,” Jungkook said as the man watched Jungkook in agony, teeth once again grazed against his bottom lip, “I can’t eat everything myself, do you mind eating it with me?” Jungkook wanted to pat himself in the back for how smooth he was. He could faintly hear a soft whistle coming from the kitchen, he swore Seokjin needed to mind his own business for once.
Jungkook didn’t have time to get annoyed at Seokjin because in front of him, the man had turned into a floundering mess, cheeks went even redder, and he looked so close to tears Jungkook for a second thought he read things wrong and the man was actually just being nice to him.
But then the man visibly inhaled before he spoke, “my name is Jimin, Park Jimin,” he said, stretching his hand toward Jungkook.
And Jungkook was the one who left speechless this time because he should be asking for his name first before jumping and asking him on a date.
“Right, right, I’m Jungkook, Jeon Jungkook, nice to meet you Jimin,” Jungkook shook his hand, it was small, unbelievably small and soft and Jungkook died a little inside.
“So...uhm.”
“Ah, right your card,” Jungkook fumbled on the card he kept safe with him since yesterday, handing it to Jimin and when their fingers brushing against each other he could feel his soul float away from his body.
Jimin accepted the card but he didn’t move anywhere as if he was waiting for Jungkook to say something. Ah, right-
“I finish at 6, then we can eat the cake,” Jungkook’s face flushed but it was all worth it when he saw Jimin beamed in excitement.
“Okay,” Jimin said, he smiled so big his eyes turned to pretty crescents, cherub cheeks bounced cutely and Jungkook decided that wanted to see that smile for the rest of his life.
When Jungkook arrives home, it was already 1 AM, past the Valentine’s day. The apartment lights are off, but he still can make out a figure sitting on the couch. Jungkook approaches him, he’s sitting while hugging a big pillow, yellow blanket drapes over his shoulder and eyes are close as his head tilts to the side in an uncomfortable angle trying to fight his sleep. Jungkook sits beside him after he puts the sacher torte inside the refrigerator and takes off his coat.
“Baby…” Jungkook calls softly, and Jimin is a light sleeper so he opens his eyes by the sound of Jungkook and gives him a lazy smile, “ I told you not to wait,” Jungkook says again.
“You know I can’t sleep without you,” Jimin wraps his hands around Jungkook’s shoulder giving his neck a little peck before he nuzzles his face there.
Jungkook plants a kiss on top of Jimin’s head, nuzzling back and he caress Jimin’s nape with affection.
“Did my bakery man sells a lot of cake today?” Jimin teases as he kisses Jungkook’s cheek, smiling widely to him this time, sleep completely forgotten.
“Your man sold every single piece of cake today,” Jungkook teases back and before long they both are laughing, it’s silly and it’s not even funny but both of them are laughing with face so close to each other.
When they finally stop laughing and just stare at each other’s eyes, Jimin gives Jungkook a long and sweet kiss before he says, “today you work hard too, happy Valentine’s day, Jungkook.”
“Hmm, thank you,” Jungkook inhales on Jimin’s scent, “let’s go to the bedroom, I want to hold you so bad,” Jungkook adds and Jimin just laughs, holding tighter onto him as he lifts Jimin up with ease and heads to their bedroom.
It’s not even Valentine’s day anymore, people already moved on from it but Jungkook is happy, very happy that even though they can’t be together on Valentine’s day, he has Jimin in his arms on every other days and hopefully, for the rest of his life too.
