This fic is bonkers. Parsing the shortcomings of a show reliant on restrictive archetypes through a metafictional lens based on trans understandings of gender, masking, and authenticity? Kind yet realistic depictions of repressed queer ppl interacting with gender/orientation stuff? Taking cis people gender bullshit and realizing its potential as a narrative device to look at gender? They make it gay??? And we read it??

    Very cool.

On a serious note, this fic is about taking all the stupid and problematic gag shit about a beloved but irresponsible gender-y manga seriously, and working through it and the deeply flawed characters that interpretation paints toward something both cathartic and independently beautiful. It recognizes and fully explores the queerness of the setting, and clearly comes from a place of deep understanding not just of good queer frameworks, but also of how living as a queer person not exposed to these refuges from the prescriptive gender roles, heteronormativity, and transphobia of society causes things to twist, and how various people work them out. The seriously fucked-up shit some of the characters do in canon is not excused or dismissed but rather given consequences, in a way that is not just a wish-fulfilling punishment but instead gives real, profound insight into why people do things the way they do, and why that humanization doesn't excuse them to their victims. Ranma's dad, for example, isn't just a gag idiot, but an abusive father, and isn't just a villain but also a victim of trauma himself who has not healed or managed it and instead perpetrates it onto others.

The occasional harshness and unpredictability of characters who can't cheat access to their author's good frameworks as they work through their shit, together with the emotional realism of the setting, makes moments of vulnerability and emotional openness as nervewracking and moments of acceptance as precious as they are in real life.

This story's Ranma is one of the best depictions of a trans girl I can remember reading, full stop. I won't say any more, to avoid spoiling the character development.

Finally, I would be remiss not to mention the quality of writing in this story. Perhaps I've given an impression of how good it is through my discussion of all the powerful themes, motives, and ideas it upholds, but even though the style is unassuming and modest, it is consistently grounded in the character's perspective and levels of knowledge yet always makes fairly clear what is under the hood, in a way that is natural and believable. The author never simply tells us anything important, but instead masterfully presents the scenario at hand and guides the path through the narrative on the level of our interpretation, with the right amount of faith that we will pick up the trail. The character writing is lifelike, beautiful, and especially in the second Interlude chapter (the most recently-released at the time of writing) the author does things that I won't spoil, but which are commanding and powerful through the way they move the characters.

With the exception of one specific arc, the pacing is excellent, and nearly the whole work reads like a carefully-polished short fic, but with all the benefits of context and slow development available to a long one.

    It is really, really wonderful.
