    Summary

Once upon a time there was a nest of robins in the eaves, all born in the cool early spring. Xie'er had climbed up to look at the eggs, which were blue as jewels. How strange that nature could paint an egg that way. And how cruel nature could be, letting the infant birds fall. Xie'er had found one weeks later, a tiny fetal coil of flesh against the paving-stone, still almost featherless and naked-looking. It had been an ugly thing, half-formed, unbirdlike in its rawness; the skin was like wet paper, pulled over the tiny threadlike bones. Ants had gotten at it. The eyes were full of them.

Xie'er had pitied it. Then touched it with a stick.

It's incredible that he doesn't cry. He must just be too tired, too wired, to let it out. Maybe his body is saving the liquid for something.

    Summary

That night he lies in bed alone until the moon is high. When the rest of the house is deathly silent, except for the light snores coming from behind every door, he sneaks in slippered feet through the halls and over to the covered kitchens. There’s faint light coming from the smoldering hearth, where the coals are piled to keep them warm for tomorrow’s early start. Someone has curled up by it on a mat, like a scullery maid. But it’s not a maid, it’s a man. A tall long-legged man. His husband. The dubiously immortal master of Changming manor.

    What the fuck, Xie thinks.

Wei Wuxian dropped her hand to her side as Madam Yu and the dragons drew closer, refocusing before her mind wandered too far away. She needed to be demure and un-fox-like if she wanted to die a moderately less painful death. They couldn’t know what she was.

“I hope this offering can lay the foundations for more amiable relations,” Madam Yu stated.

Huli jings needed touch. It didn’t matter if it was sexual or platonic, but it was a biological necessity. Without touch, a huli jing would slowly wither and die.

(In which huli jing Wei Wuxian becomes dragon Lan Wangji’s war prize, and biology brings them closer together.)

    Summary

The melody gets a little clearer when he breaks out of the trees, and Jingyi changes course with certainty, barreling down the back hill and through the Cloud Recesses, dodging scandalized disciples left and right. He throws open the doors to the Receiving Hall without announcement and bows nearly double, eyes on the floor instead of on the shocked faces of the Mei delegation and the impenetrable gaze of the Chief Cultivator.

"Forgive this disciple," Jingyi shouts, because he's going to get punished for rule breaking regardless. "From the back hill, Hanguang-jun, there is a song in the wind!"

    Lan Jingyi comes of age.
