A ball of light, floating shoulder-height (for most of them) off the ground, expands and brightens, stretching to fill the room. It touches the ceiling, pops with a sharp crack, and a person tumbles out of it. There are streaks of red as they somersault, coming to rest within Riz’s reach.
They prop themselves on an elbow but wince as they try to stand. One of their wings—they have wings—opens up, coming very close to Riz’s face. The wings are a brilliant orange against the dark of the house, and Riz can’t help touching the tip of one very gently.
They whip around as soon as he does. There is fire in their eyes, and static growing in Riz’s stomach.
“Oh, shit,” he says, and then he disappears.

He makes quick work of scanning the list in front of him. “I’ve a Dani Clayton here, that you?”
Dani jerks her head once in confirmation. “Yea, yea it’s my uh- it’s my stage--”
He doesn’t care. “In the main doors and up the staircase on your right before you reach the main bar. The other acts are already up there in the dressing room.”
OR
Dani is sick of suburbia, sick of Eddie. Sick of her life in general really.
So why not give comedy a go to break the monotony of everyday life. What's the worst that could happen? It's not like she'd meet the love of her life in the dressing room of Bly Manor Bar and have her entire life in suburbia turned upside down... right?

If it’s not about how friendly Miss Clayton is––how warm she is, how she’d wrapped Flora in the most wonderful hug on the first day, how big she smiles when Flora or her classmates answer a question right, make her laugh, or really seems to do anything at all––it’s about cool she is, how American, and that? That is something Jamie simply cannot abide.
“I remember when you used to call me cool,” Jamie sighs wistfully, sliding a bowl of ramen in front of Flora before sinking into her seat across from her. “Not some…” She waves a hand, vaguely, crinkling her nose, “American.”
