Summary

Summary
Everyone knows the stories of the Yiling Laozu. That he can raze a village to the ground with no more than a thought, a whim. That he has no heart. That he devours virgins and defiles livestock. Or maybe it’s the other way around.
Lan Wangji, second son and therefore unlikely to amount to much, doesn’t think he’s the kind of virgin the Yiling Laozu either defiles or devours, whichever one it is. The stories found in whispered chatter aren’t sure, so neither is he.
But everyone knows the Yiling Laozu is to be feared, so when the roving, crumbling courtyard manor sets itself up in the mountains beyond Caiyi, Lan Wangji’s uncle takes him aside and informs him that he is to take particular care in his comings and goings.
