    Summary

Life after war has much more politics than Gimli thought, and much less Legolas than he would like, but the latter he knows (or believes) he has to get used to. Or: Legolas leaps, occasionally stumbling, into a new age, while Gimli can't see the wood for the (green)leaf.

"How do your people court then?"

The question was not as abrupt as it would seem, firstly because the news that his brother was courting had clearly left Legolas in deep thought for a number of days, secondly because Legolas had long ago confessed his curiosity about the lives and customs of Gimli's kin, and thirdly because Legolas' grace was well-known to be in his light feet and not his manners.

However, Gimli saw no reason to let him have his own way entirely. "And by my people do you mean the Longbeards, or the Dwarves of Erebor, or the wandering mender that I now seem to be?"

"I meant," Legolas said, "wandering jesters."

i love love LOVE the way that this fic explores the political implications of the war of the ring, especially for the kingdoms in the north. it's so interesting to think about how the fellowship and the defeat of sauron both would and wouldn't transform middle-earth's international relations, lol. erebor and mirkwood both get the chance to shine -- and this is all just gravy! the real star of the show is, of course, the gigolas mutual pining, in which every misunderstanding and bitten-back confession hits sooooo sweet. all around, just a grand old time. :D

    Summary

Ed doesn’t remember the first form his daemon took, but he knows the first form he remembers it taking. He was a small child, no older than four, when he sat on the ground next to a mug of water he liked to play with, splashing it about, and the thing took on the form of an elongated creature with long, thin legs in the liquid, poking its head out over the rim with a curious glance.

It wasn’t Ed’s first word either, what he said there, but it’s the one he remembers most, more than any others:

    Shrimp.

    or:

Ed spends half his life hiding who he is. That is, until Izzy and his daemon Baz turn his whole world upside down (and Bimp happens).

Where Ed's daemon is the kraken, Izzy's is a swallow, and they find out that size isn't everything, but sometimes small is just right.

easily the cleverest and most interesting daemon AU i’ve ever read!!!

the decision to turn the kraken into ed’s daemon makes material soooooo many fascinating parts of his portrayal in the show: the trauma of killing his father… the way that he feels torn between various personas over the course of the narrative… the fact that izzy seems drawn more to ‘the kraken’ than to ed himself… the way that ed never seems to know what exactly it is he wants. this fic takes all of those abstract concepts and concretizes them in the figure of shrimp, the kraken -- who is a true tour de force in his own right! izzy is, of course, as heartbreaking and stalwart as all the best izzy depictions are, and you will wish you had his daemon baz all to yourself, just as ed does. :D

overall, an immensely smart and satisfying read. definitely a go-to for any edizzy shipper, as that’s the focus… but there’s a dollop of true steddy hands at the end, as well.

check the tags, but i’ll warn for PTSD and a pretty tough sequence of scenes in chapter 5: the characters engage in sex under emotional duress, which ends in dissociation, and then we get a depiction of veryyyy visceral despair and desperation. these scenes are really thoughtfully written and important to the story, but they are intense and therefore worth preparing for.

    Summary

Edward Teach is the director of the best marching band in the state. They win every competition with ease, and he’s renowned for his work in music education across the country. Only one problem: he hates his job.

Stede Bonnet is the new director of a struggling program after only two years teaching general music. He’s in over his head and he’s waiting to drown.

Ed and Stede meet, and all the sudden everything seems possible. Maybe Ed can love teaching again. Maybe Stede can change his band for the better. Maybe they could be so much more than just teacher friends.

    Summary

Bonnet took a dainty sip of rum, then put the mug down with a fussy finality. “Look, I’m not interested in deals and riches and who gets what from who. I want to find Ed, that’s it. You’ll come with us, and you’ll guide us to the Revenge, and when we’re done, you can have my other ship to do with what you like. Sell it, sail away, set it on fire, I don’t care. Do we have an accord?”

Bonnet held out a hand. His nails were ragged, and there were blisters on his fingers. Somehow, he still smelled of lavender. With all the recalcitrance of reaching towards an open flame, Izzy shook it.

(Or: after brokering an uneasy peace, Izzy Hands, Stede Bonnet and the rest of the Revenge’s depleted crew are thrown together for a mission: find Edward, snap him out of his terrible madness, and then – and then.)

    ah, lads. :( that finale.

returning to this fic in particular has been a real balm to me, lol! it's a deeply thoughtful and compelling izzy character study, covering concepts of luck, and genre, and forgiveness... it's all here, babey, in beautiful prose and exquisite dialogue. plus, it just really reminds me of those moments in my life when i have felt like the only person i can truly rely on, in the end, is myself. now: that idea is true, and it isn't; it's a very lonely thought, and it's a very empowering one. but in the end, i think this fic is just a useful exploration of how you always have company in yourself, and can always learn things about who you are and use that knowledge to grow in the company of other people. don't forget: you're you forever!

warnings for descriptions of violence and injury. and it's bittersweet, so just be prepared for that, and all. 🥲

    Summary

Ed's minding his business when the new neighbor's kid comes around holding a human puppet. It's creepy as hell, but as soon as the kid's father rounds the corner, Ed doesn't mind.

ETA: Podfic available here from Kninjaknitter my darling dearest

“Hello,” says the strangest voice Ed’s ever heard, jolting him out of his reverie, sending his heart speeding into chaos.

He opens his eyes and he’s staring straight at a stuffed animal in the shape of a human person. It is bald with a tiny hat and too-big eyes and it wears a blue shirt and a name tag that says Jeffy in the sort of scrawl normally reserved for words written in blood.

A puppet, he realizes several seconds beyond when it would have been appropriate to respond.

    yessssssss ;_____;

another incredible entry in the 'genuinely helpful mental health models' corner of the OFMD fandom. hilarious, whimsical, raw, cathartic... this fic is playing 5D emotional chess and absolutely killing it!! the character work is on another LEVEL: everyone here just siiiinnngggsss, but the author has worked out an especially brilliant approach to writing Ed, and i also want to shout out Louis as an excellently-written child character who holds up 500% to being the heart of the whole fic. Jeffy for lyff <3

just: a really wonderful love story!!! warnings for drug and alcohol use, and for a realistically difficult portrayal of self care and mental health recovery.
