Summary
Time was like water, always flowing past her and Shelby was a rock in the river of time. It flowed gently, it flowed roughly and sometimes it moved her to a different place and sometimes it wore down on her. However it never changed her, she always stayed the same. She lived through major historical events, witnessed man grow from quill and ink to computers and phones. She lived through major wars and destruction and watched cities rise from nothing.
Shelby was one of the oldest vampires, beside her father living in America and for years she avoided drama. She did have a code and killing was against everything she stood for.
However it doesn't stop a hunter from coming after her after she is framed for the death of a few young women. She meets Toni Shalifoe on her one night of freedom and is shocked when she can't pull the mortal under her spell.
Because there is something about this woman, this human that pulls Shelby under her spell and makes her yearn for a chance of normalcy.

Summary

The year of 2002, the year before she was born ended up being the last year of human civilization as the world knew it.

Summary
Shelby Goodkind loved the thought of being swept off her feet in some amazing romantic gesture.
Maybe it was because she was raised off way too many Disney movies and read too many fairytales.
She was a pre-teen when she got the idea that maybe she’d meet her ‘person’ at the park. To be fair, she now graduated from Disney movies to Hallmark movies and she had watched one too many to fuel this idea that if she just sat and waited, that her soulmate would show himself.

So, it surprises her to see the attractive blonde, yes attractive. Toni may think the other woman was pure horse shit and hate Toni for just existing, but Toni wasn’t stupid. She had taken the time to check her out when she had the boys outside, catching her doing those stretches before she went on a run.
At one point, and Toni could have blamed the summer heat on this, but she had caught Toni staring and boldly made eye contact before fucking winking at her.

Summary
Again, Toni may have been young, but her breath catches when she opens her eyes to see a girl hovering over her- a real pretty girl with gold hair and green eyes- freckles scattered along her face. She looks scared, eyes full of worry. The way the afternoon sun shines around her, it makes Toni wonder if she’s not on earth anymore because while she isn’t a fan of church, she knows the stories, so- she asks and till this day, she’d remember her six-year-old self and the first words that she ever spoke to Shelby Goodkind. “Am I dead?” She croaks and the other little girl who somehow manages to take out a mini package of tissues.

“This is going to be so much fun, Toni,” Martha says distractedly, as she scrawls down her own name. “And this means that I can properly introduce you and Shelby at auditions! You guys can now officially become friends!”
Across the cafeteria, Toni accidentally makes eye contact with Shelby, sitting at a table surrounded by other glamorous shiny girls in expensive clothes with sleek ponytails, Andrew Johnson next to her with an arm slung around her shoulders. Shelby’s expression is inscrutable, green eyes piercing, and Toni uncharacteristically is the first to break eye contact.

„I propose an ice breaker,” Shelby Goodkind says, folding her hands in front of her body and smiling at every girl on the plane. “I know it can be borin’ to introduce yourself to a whole group o’ new people, so why don’t we split up into pairs o’ two.” She explains the rest of the rules like they’re five-year-olds who have never participated in this particular kind of torture before, and Toni feels her face break out into a sneer.
She has no interest in being on this trip in the first place. The only reason she came along was to make sure no one picks on Marty, not to make friends with preppy white girls.

Jamie doesn’t hear the end of it for days.
If it’s not about how friendly Miss Clayton is––how warm she is, how she’d wrapped Flora in the most wonderful hug on the first day, how big she smiles when Flora or her classmates answer a question right, make her laugh, or really seems to do anything at all––it’s about cool she is, how American, and that? That is something Jamie simply cannot abide.
“I remember when you used to call me cool,” Jamie sighs wistfully, sliding a bowl of ramen in front of Flora before sinking into her seat across from her. “Not some…” She waves a hand, vaguely, crinkling her nose, “American.”
