Dina steps up to her and Ellie can see her eyes better now. They're wary, tired, and every bit as untrusting as Ellie would have expected. Dina looks her over too. Her eyes take in the cracked lips, sunken cheeks, weathered skin and zero in on her left hand, face paling momentarily. Ellie tugs the sleeve of her hoodie down over her hand. The fabric brushes the healing tissue just so and she fights the urge to flinch at the pain.
“Well,” she chokes on the word like it's hard to speak, “JJ is with his grandparents. Why don't you come in.” It sounds formal and serious and definitely not warm, but Ellie lets it wash over her like a balm.
