How nice it was here in St. Ives, alongside the sea but not at one of the more popular watering holes; she was going to let Rick pick their holiday locations more often. -

Alex, seated on a velvet cushion beside his father, bawled, “Hallo, Uncle Jon!” As a just-turned-four year old, he was going through a shouting phase. A countess, a marquis, and someone who was probably an exiled Russian prince or something looked around disapprovingly.

God, it was good to be back in the city. Rick, shouldering two of the artefact-laden saddlebags, followed Evelyn and Jonathan through the fort back to their apartment. His whole body ached, but he was in better shape (he thought) than the two of them. Jonathan’s arm was still in its sling and Evelyn limped on bruised and blistered feet. But they were alive. Rick smiled.

The book was almost impossibly heavy in his arms and yet Jonathan did not feel it. His sister lay stretched out on the altar below, shrieking; Imhotep stood over her with a knife, and everything inside Jonathan was screaming in terror, even as he danced about, taunting him. Imhotep lowered the knife, looking up at Jonathan with anger and contempt, and that was good, it was perfect; it just might buy them the time they needed.

Jonathan clears his throat, sinks a little lower in his armchair, and lifts yesterday’s edition of The Egyptian Gazette higher, obscuring the blush he knows he can’t control.
“I have no idea how I’m supposed to answer that, dear sister,” he replies, “seeing as I have absolutely no idea what the current bestselling novels are.”
Thankfully, there are no bookshops in the desert, so the chances of Ardeth reading it are blessedly slim.

Classes are mostly over, and the students mill around lazily in clumps, blocking the hallways with discussions the future. Everyone here is obsessed with the future. David tries to let this make him forget about the past. Since, well, since everything last year, there hasn't been much milling for David. He studies, he practices, people don't directly oppose him on the field, and he's mostly left alone, save for the occasional moment of easy malice.
