Summary
Shattering the stones on Thanos' gauntlet was meant to end the war and his tyranny. There was always a slim chance of surviving and Tony knew if he got to the gauntlet first, if closes his eyes this time for good, he knew that would be ready to face whoever it was that was waiting for him at the gates of whatever and be proud to say that he's no longer the man with everything and nothing.
Except when he opened his eyes this time, it's not the end, but a different time where everything he knew, had worked and loved for doesn't exist. How do you even begin to try to go home in a world where everything you have come to know doesn't exist yet. When you're stuck at the beginning, how do you even move forward?(Tony thinks his name should be added to the dictionary, right next to self-loathing and regret.)

There’s so much chaos happening what with Past Him still seizing on the floor due to the cardiac dysrhythmia, everyone’s attention diverted away from the Infinity Stone they had been fighting over moments before. Well, the attention of all but one other person.
Tony has made a lot of rash decisions that have led to less than appealing results in his time. Mistakes were something he had in spades. Even though he prided himself with thinking on his feet and making a quick judgement call when needed, he didn’t always get it right the first time around.
This, unfortunately, is one of those times.

There hasn't been food or water for days, the oxygen's nearly gone, and he used the last power he had available to record a message to Pepper. Maybe, he's starting to think, it would have been better if Thanos had killed him outright.
