One. Laird John Hamilton loves his brother, perhaps more than James deserves; in the end, it is an easy thing to arrange ship’s passage for two small boys to Glasgow.
Two. For a bastard nephew striking out on his own, a commission in His Majesty’s Army is a gift from Providence; it would be foolish to throw away this shot.
Three. On a brisk day in late November 1778, dried leaves crunching under his boots, General Washington encounters a young redcoat in the woods.
What price would you pay to maintain your honor?
Alexander follows the General away, and John is left on the dueling field, standing alone in the ice and mud with a still-warm pistol in his hand.
Laurens, after the duel. Companion piece to what air is to fire.

"Meet me inside!"
Laurens shoots Lee, and after that...well, after that, George tries his best. Perhaps it is too little, too late. Perhaps it is just enough, just in time to change everything.
There are a few ways this can go, and most end with Hamilton gone, back to his wife, leaving George here without counsel and much the worse for the loss. George can envision the two of them, ten years from now, war over, divided by a mountain of words unsaid and relationship limited to the barest of formal letters and well wishes from each others’ wives.
- Part 1 of essential, and destructive
This is the start of his college essay: I'm angry.
Julie makes him promise to open everything together, so he waits until all of the letters come in and they drive out to the reservoir and sit on a cement wall. It's unseasonably cool and he pulls at his sweatshirt--an Army one his dad gave him when he was ten, the only one he owns that doesn't have Panthers written all over it.
Matt, after everything goes south with J.D. McCoy.
