The best day of Anakin’s life is simultaneously the worst of his mother’s. Though he knows that Qui-Gon tried hard to free him, and that his mother would have preferred that it were him, a big part of him is far happier that it is his mother who will no longer have to slave away without any hope of seeing returns, even if it means that he will not.
There are a lot of ‘not’s that come with not being free.
Not leaving Tatooine.
Not becoming a Jedi.
Not seeing every star system in the galaxy.
And, a secret part of him whispers, not having to leave my mother.
So, earnestly, over his mother’s quiet weeping, he thanks Qui-Gon Jinn for making sure that at least one Skywalker is free, even if it's not him.

They’d brought him into the caravan for a number of reasons, but Gustav’s soft heart was the biggest of them all. It was Demond who’d argued initially for wariness, even as he’d helped Bo to haul the former corpse to the caravan; the scars on Desmond’s face were testament enough to the veracity of his apprehensions and Gustav had learned, over the years, to pay attention to them when he saw fit to speak up. Desmond was no paranoid, just a realist. More of one than Gustav had ever been, even if he wasn’t quite the optimistic fool anymore that he’d once been. It was why they made such good partners in the carnival.
“He’s your project then, Gustav," Desmond had said. "If you’re so dead set. I’m not…against it. But I’ll have none of it.”

The baby has been passed to Percy now because Vex and Zahra are doing that thing women do where they talk with their whole bodies, clasping arms and leaning in close enough that their foreheads are touching. It would look like they were sharing intimate secrets, except they’re both talking excitedly at normal volume, the subject having changed to one of the myriad topics that two women of class might discuss: shoes, hair, dresses, the cathartic thrill of killing something big and terrifying that was bothering people. That sort of thing.
