    Summary

The metaphor is imperfect but still workable. If my long term memory is a hard drive, then my short term memory is RAM. The hard drive became read-only following the illness. New data is stored in RAM and can be used while I remain awake. Going to sleep – ‘turning off’ – wipes the RAM, returning the system to what it was prior to the illness.

On the surface, it would be easy to call this fic a crossover with the Christopher Nolan film Memento: Sherlock has a form of amnesia that doesn’t allow him to retain new information, with his memory resetting every time he goes to sleep, and tattooing information on his body as a permanent reminder of what’s most important to him. But that’s only the surface reading of the fic; it goes way deeper.

The way the story is told is absolutely in character for Sherlock, and Sherlock alone: he copes with it in a manner unique to him. His thirst for information, no matter how personally affected and upsetting it might be; his method of retaining information and the experimentation to find the best way (first post-its, then a notebook, then the tattoos – even down to the tattoos being in his own handwriting so he’ll know it’s genuine); and the way he uses music, language, and the mind palace technique to try to build structure in his life. And throughout it all is John, whose grumpiness, intelligence, and loyalty are also very much in character. The story builds the medical issues, the foundation and growth of John and Sherlock’s friendship, and then their love, with all three interwoven carefully.

In addition, the non-linear structure of this fic – with alternating chapters telling the story backwards and forwards, and alternating John and Sherlock’s POV – is fantastically complex and fascinating. The result is similar to my reaction to Memento (and this is the other parallel): a story that I wanted to start over the minute I finished it.
The words that took my breath away:
“I told John I love him.” His cheeks feel awfully warm when he looks up and meets John’s eyes. “I’ve never… never told anyone that.” … “You’ve said it plenty of times,” John says. “Heard it just as often. But because you’re a lucky bastard, you get to hear it again like it’s brand new. Ready?”

    Summary

They’re sure of each other, now. They’re settled. And as far as Sherlock is concerned, settled isn’t the least bit boring or stifling or constraining.

Settled is marvellous. Settled is freeing.

Settled means sometimes you make romantic love by candlelight, murmuring hushed words of endless devotion solely because you want to, because the moment feels right and good.

And sometimes, settled means you fuck on the sofa on a Saturday afternoon, straightforward and uncomplicated, no deep desperate romance necessary, just because fucking is fun.
