“I…” The boy blinked a few times, his mouth opening for a moment, only to close and open once more as he seemed to struggle to piece together what he wanted to say.
Or what he wanted to admit.
“I can’t really carry a tune. And mom wasn't keen on singing for others. So...uh...I'm much more content to sit and listen…”
The boy tried to play his comment off with a smile and a small laugh, his hand coming to rub the back of his neck as he so often did when he was nervous or embarrassed.
And it was still not the full truth. Shouta could see it.

Because he needed friends more than he needed to prove himself. And Shouta was pleased to see that the verdant haired boy seemed to agree with him for once, a bright smile that left a funny feeling in Shouta’s chest, stretched across the boy’s face as he watched a few of his classmates get in position to race one another down the hillside.
A competition.
But a lighthearted one at least.
