“Look at it from every angle, Ei,” Yae continued. Ei guessed the annoyance on her face still showed. “They send their most powerful spies on an assignment involving a corporation they’ve been chasing for decades. We blow this mission, and we can kiss both of our careers goodbye— I don’t know about you, but I like the cut I get from working.”
Ei closed her eyes for a moment. She knew that Yae was right. Still, she didn’t quite like it, but she guessed that she had to learn to endure it.
“I’ll tolerate these arrangements,” Ei finally said, and she held Yae’s steady gaze. “But I will be warning you once, and once only. I don’t need the company of others when I do my job.”
Yae flashed her a fox-like smile.
Or, Ei was tasked with an assignment, one involving guns and a certain partner who only seemed interested in toying with her.
