“Your, uh. Boyfriend not around?” he asks, nervously surveying the parking lot like maybe Jason’s lurking behind a gas pump waiting for the opportune moment to jump out and shit all over him. Chrissy gets the apprehension.
She shakes her head. “No, he’s out of town for a few weeks. Visiting his grandparents.”
Eddie looks relieved. “And when the cat’s away, the mice will… eat chili cheese dogs?”
She can’t help it, she giggles. He grins. The atmosphere still feels… gawky, but there’s a little relief in the moment, at least. “Something like that,” she says quietly.
