He lets out a long sigh and watches Bucky. Back home he was always too vain to let more than a day’s worth of stubble build up, but now he’s got about three days of scruff on his chin. He shouldn’t look handsome like this. His eyes are shut, but Steve can tell by his breathing that he’s still awake. The cat is curled up on his stomach and purring like an idling motor.
“He’s actually pretty cute.”
Bucky smiles softly, too sleepy to make whole faces.
“Damn right,” he hums. He’s stroking the cat’s fur, which is soft and fine now that it’s clean. He looks so open and inviting. Steve doesn’t close his eyes, watching Bucky’s gentle fingers and trying to come up with a plausible excuse to go touch him.

Bucky pretends to be asleep when Steve crawls into bed, too tired to feel guilty over the quivery pleasure that settles in his belly when Steve’s arm brushes his. Steve falls asleep in about five minutes flat, unconsciously wedging his icy toes against Bucky’s leg. Bucky doesn’t move him.
He drifts to sleep in a comfortable haze and tries not to wonder where this feeling was two hours ago when he had Marie in his lap.

so emotionally satisfying on every front which it is possible for this to be emotionally satisfying on!! good for cathartic crying and also for the experience of sweet, happy heart-pain and also just, sweet happy having-a-heart. the whole thing's very delicate and rough-edged and warm-slow-syrupy; i love all of the ocs and every quiet unobtrusive brick-laying aspect of steve and bucky's larger worlds, and i'm in awe of their characterizations and how UNBEARABLY in love they are, god, but also they're just fun! their bantery moments of best-friends-since-childhood-giving-each-other-a-hard-time dialogue are fun and charming.
