Rumor had already made the entire cultivation world aware that Jiang Fengmian had found the orphaned son of Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze, and that he had taken him into his home as his ward, allowing him to become a Jiang sect disciple – treating him almost as one of the family, even. That much was known, so it didn’t come as much of a surprise when Jiang Fengmian proudly introduced him or even more proudly showed him off, praising him to the high heavens.
What did come as a surprise was how little he praised his own son standing beside him, despite them being only a few days apart in age. It was as if Jiang Fengmian had simply forgotten that such a creature existed, much less that he had himself contributed to its spawning, and the constant looks of hope – invariably crushed – the child sent him made it clear that the present situation had been going on for some time.
Fuck you, Nie Mingjue thought, seeing red, seeing instead Nie Huaisang in his failed saber classes, struggling so desperately to keep up with the rest even though his body wouldn’t allow for it, being told he was useless and a good-for-nothing and fit for nothing but marriage. Fuck you, Jiang Fengmian.

"So grim, didi. What happened?”
“They went after A-Jie,” Jiang Cheng said grimly. “I was late coming for you because they went after our sister.”
Wei Wuxian gasped, heart stuttering as he flailed in Jiang Cheng’s hold. “Is she okay? Is our jiejie okay?”
“Stop that,” Jiang Cheng demanded, giving Wei Wuxian a shake. “She’s fine. Bruised but fine. The house is burning down to the fucking ground but everyone got out. I'm sorry I was late, A-Xian.”
“It’s fine.” Wei Wuxian slurred, his head lolling on Jiang Cheng’s shoulder, heart starting again up again at his brother’s reassurances. “It's fine, little brother. Jiejie is more important.”
Jiang Cheng laughed bitterly as he hussled them along the dimly lit parking garage. They were almost clear. “Whatever. You are both equally important. That wasn’t the issue. And this situation fucking sucks.”

Nie Mingjue scoffed. “I’d offer you a job too, Wei Wuxian, but I would only hire you if Jiang Wanyin came along. No offense.”
Wei Wuxian waved a hand, still starry-eyed over Lan Wangji’s announcement. “Completely understandable. I do my best work for Chengcheng.”
“For the love of God,” Jiang Wanyin said, nearly begging, “Stop calling me Chengcheng.”
“Ah,” Jiang Fengmian said, his voice jovial enough. “I see I’ve arrived just in time. Before A-Cheng can disgrace the Jiang.”
Jiang Wanyin went pale and slowly turned to see his father standing there, smiling with genial good grace at their group. He extended a hand to Nie Mingjue, who only hesitated a moment before taking it in a firm clasp.
“Mingjue, my boy, it’s good to see you again. And judging by the state of celebration, I take it my boys didn’t cause you too much trouble? And congratulations are in order?” The patriarch of the Jiang asked, amusement in his tone.

Jiang Cheng watched his father grow smaller in the distance, as the elder descended the mountain. The man hadn’t even said goodbye to him. Jiang Fengmian had escorted him here in silence. When they’d arrived, he’d greeted Lan Qiren, made his excuses, and immediately turned around to leave. What was the point of that, Jiang Cheng wondered.
A hand came down on his shoulder and he returned his attention to Lan Qiren, who regarded him with kind eyes behind that famous stern expression.
“How have you been, young Wanyin? You’ve gotten so much taller. It seems as if only yesterday you were as high as my knee. Now, you’re nearly as tall as Wangji.”
Jiang Cheng bowed once more and smiled with real fondness for his favorite teacher. “Well, Professor, thank you for having me.”
