Once upon a time, there was a boy named Anakin Skywalker, a Galactic Republic, and a Jedi Order.
Once upon a time, there was a terrible war that destroyed all of them.
We think we know how that story begins, and how it ends.
(We don't actually know any of that story at all.)

“Wait.” Zoya’s eyes show a hint of yellow, and her nostrils flare. “Ivan Ivanovich Sakharov? Big brown wolf, solitary to a fault, and extremely crabby?”
“Yes, that’s him.” Fedyor frowns at her, his stomach sinking. “Why?”
Zoya doesn’t answer for a long moment. She spins on her heel and stares up at the wall. Then she says, “Ivan Ivanovich Sakharov was one of Morozov’s followers. His right-hand man, actually. I didn’t know that he was even still alive. But if he’s out there in exile, holding a grudge or God knows what – ”
“Hold on,” Fedyor interrupts. “Aleksander Ilyich Morozov? But wasn’t he the – ”
“The vampire?” Zoya completes grimly. “Yes. That vampire.”

Alina Starkov is nobody special. Or so she used to think.
Now, as the only survivor of a mysterious mining accident on Keramzin Station, a remote outpost of the Ravkan Empire, she is plunged into a dangerous world of political and palace intrigue, the looming threat of interstellar war, and a strange connection to the Grisha, the galaxy's most feared military order -- and its general, the enigmatic and dangerous Alexander Kirigan. But as she struggles to make sense of her unexplained new abilities and her uncertain future, the rest of the Common Sector, from Fjerdan Federation drüskelle to Kerch merchants, wants to get hold of her, and will stop at nothing to do so. Enemies are gathering on every side, rebellious planets bide their time and plan their uprisings, and the secret that Alina is unwittingly hiding may burn the entire universe to the ground.
A bunch of misfits are, unfortunately, its only hope.

To my dear and unfortunate successor:
I have debated for many years whether I should finally commit this story to paper. In one sense, the decision might seem easy: I am a historian, after all, and the reconstruction and understanding of the past is our profession’s stock in trade. But there is always the question of where it crosses over into autobiography, where scholarly objectivity gives way to subjective memory, where one cannot always be sure that the historian is, in fact, the best person to tell the historian’s own story. Does the weight of academic responsibility, of factual clarity, of reconstructing events as they truly “were” (itself an utter fallacy, but that is a discussion for later), overrule the understandably human impulse to make it a better tale, to clean it up around the edges, to present one’s own actions in the most benevolent and justifiable light? Despite my unique circumstances, I am no more free from that impulse than anyone else, and so I must ask whether you are willing to trust me as the narrator of my own history.

“And? What’s your name?”
“Fedyor.” There’s nothing else for it. “Fedyor Mikhailovich.”
“Ivan,” the other man responds curtly, just when Fedyor thinks he won’t. “Ivanovich. Fine. Go upstairs and get cleaned up, you can stay the night. In the morning, I’ll call someone to take you back to the mainland. You’re a long way from Moscow.”
“You don’t need to,” Fedyor says, a little too quickly. “I mean – I’m on a leave of absence, traveling around out here for a while. They’re not expecting me back any time soon.”

"This is a terrible idea."
(It is. But they don't have much of a choice)
