"That's what I'd like to find out. Perhaps we could find somewhere to sit down, get to know each other a bit better?" Buddy raises one eyebrow, lets her tone turn up near the end, dangerously flirtatious, and Vespa can't help but think back to when they'd been sitting at the bar, to the things Buddy had said to her (her cheeks light up like a neon sign as she remembers, and she's thankful again for the cover of dusk). She'd be a fool to fall for the same dumb grift more than once. It would be stupid.
She'll just have to keep a closer eye on the wallet this time.

She finds two of her favorite combat knives, one the first thing she'd ever stolen for herself, the other an anniversary present engraved with Buddy's name. Holding one in each hand, she feels a little more at ease already. They both fit perfectly into the holsters, too, and she smooths her skirt back down over them.
"All right, Bud," she calls. "Prove me wrong about these dumb things, why don't you."
"Gladly," Buddy stands up from her seat in front of the vanity mirror. Rounding on Vespa, she looks at her with a glint in her eye before coming to stand just behind her. Her hands find their way to Vespa's hips, and she spins her around so they're face to face.
(Buddy and Vespa reach a consensus on how to accessorize for a heist.)

In other news, a stranger came to our… lovely little town today. His teeth were sharp, like a fox, and his eyes were… it was like he could look right through you. Through all the grime and malaise of the world and right into your heart. And god, the way he smelled. I'm not a fan of cologne usually— makes my head hurt— but on him it was… different. Just another piece of the puzzle.
Or whatever. Or— whatever. 'Course I'm just telling you all this so you know him when you see him— shut up, Rita, I'm on the air— not like it'll be too hard. He calls himself Dr. Rex Glass, but let me editorialize here for a second, 'cuz there's no way that anyone has a name like that…(A Welcome to Night Vale AU. Minimal knowledge of Welcome to Night Vale is actually required.)

"Is is dumb that… that after, you know, everything, I'm still scared of something as insignificant as a number changing?" Juno's sudden comment does not startle him, but only because he has a good amount of practice at not being startled by abrupt sounds.
He sets down his pencil and gives Juno his full attention. "It is not," he replies.
Juno thinks about this for a second. "Yeah, well, you wouldn't think anything's dumb, would you."
"That is not true. Many of your jokes indicate otherwise. As well as the entirety of the Bad Cop series, the majority of political scandals, and Ransom's kitchen etiquette."
It's Juno's birthday. Not that he cares, or anything. He just didn't expect everyone else aboard the ship to care.

She idly pats at Vespa's head, pages through a magazine she'd picked up at the store, makes herself laugh by telling Vespa all the second-rate celebrity gossip Ymir has to offer and getting nothing but a blank stare in response, answers Rita's many texts updating the two of them in long-winded form on the crew's most recent exploits. Killing time until the Rangian sunrise.
The dust of a life on the lam has settled. The werewolf routine is practically second nature by now.

Summary
Buddy Aurinko prided herself on her ability to adapt to any situation. It was part of what kept her alive for 50 years, and at the top of her criminal career for 30. It was how she’d escaped and thrived in prisons and parties alike, and it’s how she’d met Vespa. If someone tells you a secret, pretend you didn’t already know it. If someone thinks they know you, don’t call their bluff. If someone comes at you with a knife because you stole her wallet and heart, you win before you’re forced to give them back.
But back then it was as true as it is now, that Vespa Ilkay was the ultimate weakness to that ability. All that time, and Vespa had never once adapted for anyone, never changed because the situation demanded she be someone else, someone more. Vespa looked you in the eye and demanded you take her as she is, or else you’d regret it. Buddy had built her empire on bullshit, and Vespa had built hers on not leaving room for anything of the kind.
